Have you ever stumbled across a letter or email that you wrote when you were younger – or worse, had the person you sent it to stumble across it — and laughed your ass off? My friend Sheila just found a letter that our friend Tamara wrote her in the summer of 1994, when we were in college. My three favorite excerpts:
- "I got my old internship but for no money. The experience however is important…. I talked to Robb last week, and he is working three jobs. Listening to him, I feel guilty for having time at night to watch television. Did you watch The Joan and Melissa Rivers Story? Oh what talent!! Why do the good movies come on when we are not at school."
- "[An older gentleman who worked at the student newspaper] is dead. Unbelievable. Speaking of dead — Did you hear of the rumor circulating through Hollywood? Supposedly, Mark-Paul Gosselaar [pictured] is dead. Who is he? Zack on Saved by the Bell. Never fear, he is not really dead.* So we can all breathe a little easier."
- "We must paint Philadelphia red sometime. I want a real cheesesteak!! I really like this pen. Well, I will write soon. I am on my way to San Francisco. Maybe I will run into the Real Word III cast. Who knows?"
Your turn.
*Gosselaar, sporting long brown hair I do not approve of, will star in TNT’s upcoming Steven Bochco legal drama, Raising the Bar.

Eeew, I don’t like the hair either! Who could have guessed that Slater would turn out so much hotter than Zack?
You and your confessionals, Mandi! You always make me dredge up such embarrassing memories. I found a fan letter that I had written to…..I can’t believe I’m going to say this….Mackenzie Astin from The Facts of Life. I never did send it (thank God), but apparently, I had a real thing for him. Phew! I feel better now. Still, everyone, feel free to make fun. My taste in guys has changed since.
Oy, the thing I’ve written and later felt dumbest about was a comment on Popwatch.
I made some idiotic attempt at humor related to a post about JJ Walker attending a ceremony with Anne Coulter. People were so offended by my attempt at humor that I had to ask the PDub staff to delete them.
I’ve written some stinkers (the comments I made about “man children” made even me cringe upon later inspection), but that was the first time I’d written anything that made me feel ashamed. Sorry about that fellow Pdubbers.
The recent news of a New Kids on the Block Reunion made me relive a shameful memory…at a 5th grade slumber party myself and some girlfriends each recorded taped messages of love and devotion to our favorite New Kid. Thankfully, we never sent the tape, and Jonathan never got to hear my attempt and being sexy and beguiling.
My post was supposed to read “my attempt at being sexy and beguiling.”
When I was younger I was obsessed with Alyssa Milano. So obsessed I begged my mom to change my name to Alyssa. Anyway, I wrote her a fan letter telling her how much I loved her, as well as how I would watch “Who’s The Boss” and write down every outfit she wore and my attempts to re-create them the following week at school.
Needless to say, I never got a reponse.
I have the vaguest memory of writing letters to the “Charlie’s Angels” fan club in 1977. How can I possibly regret that? I was ten years-old and already horny as hell and they were all so gorgeous! Cheryl Ladd, I still love you!
I quoted “Music of my Heart” lyrics in my senior high school year book. “You’ll never know what you’ve done for me, what your faith in me has done for my soul.” ‘Nuff said.
When I was in high school, I was a current affairs geek and read TIME magazine every week; my dream was to get a letter to the editor published. Spring of my senior year, Michael Jackson was on the cover and I thought “I can write about this!” I sent three different letters, two of them very “intellectual;” the third letter was short b/c I knew that one sentence letters often got published. And so, the third letter was published: “Michael is magic.” As an ex-boyfriend pointed out a few years ago, he’s not very magic anymore.
I quoted a poem from “Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul” in my high school valedictory speech (to be fair, it wasn’t too terrible of a poem).
I also quoted “Rent” (I’m less embarrassed about that).
He’s growing into his looks (gets more handsome as he gets older) but get a haircut (it did wonders for David Cook)
Woah. Katee Sackhoff looked a lot like a guy when she was younger! This must be why they chose her for the role of Starbuck….
Mandi — did you ever get your cheesesteak? If not, and you decide to, avoid Pat’s and Geno’s. They’re tourist traps and widely considered the worst in the city. Go to Tony Luke’s on Oregon in South Philly, or Jim’s on South Street.
Aw vintage D.O. stories on EW! Very awesome. Love your popwatch blogging Mandi.
Sometimes the memories of such written stuff is just as embarrassing as if I’d found the actual material – short stories in middle school, fawning letters to Shaun Cassidy, Robert Urich, Paul Michael Glaser, etc. (I got pre-signed postcards back from Urich & Glaser – hey, I was about 13 or 14 – that was a huge treat!) I’m mortified to admit all this!
Slash fanfiction.
I laughed out loud at this post… if only because when I was little, the first fan letter I ever wrote (and sent!) was to Mark Paul G___ (don’t know how to spell the last name, don’t want to take the time to look). I remember thinking, “even if he doesn’t write me back soon, he will SOMEDAY, like when I’m 20 or something”. Here I am 24, and no letter back. Damn that Mark Paul!!!
Oh the horror of the 1992 yearbook quotes. I distinctly recall writing a line from “Forever Young” by Rod Stewart: “whatever road you choose, I’m right behind you, win or lose.” I thought I was so deep and the words so memorable. I need to go crawl under a rock now…
