Aimee Mann’s new album, out June 3, is called @#%&*! Smilers, which is not a group Mann herself ever seems to have belonged to, except maybe when she posed for the uncharacteristically grinning photo that adorns her homepage. @#%&*! Smilers is full of portraits of (in Mann’s own description) people with "dark, eccentric personalities." Judging by her new single, "Freeway," which she introduced on a recent episode of the Ovation channel’s Artists Den (embedded below), the new set offers more of the exquisitely crafted wistful, wry melancholy that Mann devotees and music critics love (and that the pop charts ignore). Mann’s website has all the details on the album release (on her own SuperEgo label), and her summer tour, while there are more snippets of her music at her MySpace page. Feel free, Mann fans, to use the comments section to proclaim your Mann crush and evaluate her new tunes.

eeee! so excited for a new album and another tour!
While no longer a huge fan, I can always appreciate her music. Besides, she was on Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Even if she weren’t already cool, that puts her in the Hall of Fame…
Love her!
I LOVE Aimee Mann. Thank you for posting this. What I love most about Mann’s music is that not only is it exquisitely crafted, but she never sacrifices a catchy melody, and a great, memorable hook. Everybody makes a big deal about how sad her music is, but at the end of the day, Aimee Mann makes seriously good, (and inevitably underrated) pop music. She deserves all the Mann crushes she gets. (She puts on a great live show, too, if anybody is wondering.)
Aimee Mann & ABBA in one day! i died and went to gay heaven!!!
seriously though, Aimee Mann is an amazing musician. Can’t wait to hear the new album.
Who is cooler than Aimee Mann? Nobody, I’d say. I agree that her live shows really hit the spot.
Aimee Mann is one of the best artists out there and I can’t wait to hear all of the new album.
I’ve been a Mann fan since Til Tuesday, but my love for her work truly deepened at the start of her solo career. I’ve seen her no less than 10 times live–and have come to think she’s among the greatest of songwriters and performers. Every song tells a story with great emotional resonance–you know exactly how the singer feels in each song, whether it’s major disgust, general apathy or heated compassion. By not selling out for product’s sake, Aimee is a true artist in every sense of the word. I cannot imagine my life without hearing her words and her voice–she has deeply enriched the musical fabric of our world and I bow in awe of her majestic artistry! Thanks to E for noticing–maybe those looking for depth, content and style will catch onto Mann’s magical presence!
Aimee Mann is the shizzle. Can’t wait to hear her new stuff.
i love this song. can’t wait to see her this month in dallas!!!
