Thank you for pointing out a couple of the things that bugged me about the Anita Briem. She walks like a lumbering sailor and her line delivery is terrible. I'm not sure she has any idea what she's doing. Period pieces call for different skills. I would think they auditioned a lot of actresses and this is the best they could find? She's simply awful and has not a lick of chemistry with JRM. Thank goodness Jane dies a year after marrying Henry... maybe we won't have to watch her too much next season.

The thing is, that's the perfect characterization of Jane Seymour. Whereas Catherine and Anne were intelligent, well-educated women, Jane was simple and humble.
I wonder if the series will ever touch upon the fact that papa seymour slept with Edward's wife. And where, pray tell, is Thomas?

The contrasts between Anne and Jane are so distinct. Whatever characteristic you would use to describe Anne, you would use the opposite for Jane. I guess that is why Henry was so attracted to Jane.
It does seem at this point, being the King's chosen isn't exactly what any young maid would wish for.
I love how Anne said Jane was "wenching" with Henry. I'm gonna have to start using that one.

Slings and Arrows is my favorite TV/film to recommend these days, it's such a brilliant series - I'm glad you're liking it! It's amazing how much they packed into 3 6 episode seasons!
Hmm - after seeing the previews for Episode 9, I think I better get my S&A DVD handy so that I can see poor Smeaton/David Alpay happy and smiling again after next Sunday's ordeal!

Thank you for your brilliant synopsis. I sometimes seem to miss the subtle things, but I am bracing myself for the great payoff this season. Again I say, poor Ann. What was the "Music Man" doing in her chambers when she received the announcement that the king was hurt? Ann was a little too touchy feel-ly, I might say and her lady-in-waiting certainly noticed it also. All this leading to Ann's great fall... Ah such good drama!

I love the way Ray Winstone portrays Henry VIII. I think he might be my favorite actor in that role (although JRM is far nicer to look at).
The thing I was left wondering at the end of this episode was whether the writers will have Henry's health start to decline after his accident as it did in real life. As you pointed out, he gets a leg ulcer that leads to gout....and that will lead to massive weight gain. Is this when we start to see the physical changes in the king? He did, after all, say he should have know that he couldn't act the same way as he used to.
Plain annoys me. She simpers too much.

Great recap! The Masterpiece Henry the VIII is really good. I like Ray Winstone'st take on the king and HBC is brilliant as usual. She always excels when in a corset.
