Who's excited to see 'Australia'?

Australia_lAs a guy with a Moulin Rouge poster on his office wall, it goes without saying that I plan on seeing Baz Luhrmann’s directorial followup, Australia, when it hits theaters in November. And based on the new teaser trailer that just went up at Apple.com (click here to see it, or catch the embedded YouTube clip after the jump), I’m hopeful that the Nicole Kidman-Hugh Jackman vehicle will be worth the seven-year wait. It certainly has the kind of epic sweep (candy-colored skylines! gorgeous costumes! thundering hooves!) that Oscar voters love, and I’m digging all the details, right down to the art-deco-y font used on its stars’ names. You in or out, or reserving judgment till you see more footage/read the reviews? (PopWatch photo editor Connie Yu informs me she is not on board. "It looks just like Far and Away," she says, "and Nicole Kidman’s character can’t even spit out the narrative. This is what we’ve been waiting for?") What say you, PopWatchers?

Can’t wait looks amazing, very epic.

I’ve never been much of a fan of Nicole Kidman. Hugh Jackman looks good. At least they get to use their natural accents for once.

i’ll be there with you, slezak, on opening night. i’m a sucker for anything baz luhrmann (i may even sometimes still listen to that sunscreen song of his). but i’m glad you mentioned font choice because that’s an important factor in my movie experience! i hated “into the wild” on many levels, but the font choice in the title sequence was a huge pet peeve of mine. “australia” looks promising so far. luhrmann has excellent taste in typeset and lettering.

Slezak, you’re the man of my dreams. Idol-worship and now Moulin Rouge on the office wall…Will you be my gay boyfriend? Personally I’ve been suffering a bit of Nicole Kidman backlash over the past few years, but I’m hoping that Baz brings out the fantastic in her again. I for one am dying to see how his visual sense has evolved over this long hiatus. He’s always thrilled me before so I expect he’ll do it again.

Oh, snap, I LOVED Far and Away!

    YES! YES! YES!

Well the music of Henry V got me interested and I love the Red Curtain Trilogy, so I’m up for it.

I can’t wait to see this film. I love Baz Luhrmann, he has been away too long!
It’s in my top 5 films to see this year:
    Australia
    The Edge of Love
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
    Igor
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

No thanks. I hated Far and Away. This is being compared to Gone With the Wind, one of the most overrated movies in history.

  • MrKitty

Nicole Kidman was not the awful part of Far and Away – Tom Cruise was – and Baz Luhrmann is a genius…I can hardly wait for this movie…

um- i hope its not another Cold Mountain but it looks awesome! when did Kidman start getting lip injections???

I’ve been waiting for this! I love Nicole Kidman and Moulin Rouge! is one of my all time favorite films so I’m definitely on board!!!!!!

it’s sad to say, but i honestly can’t even stand looking at nicole kidman anymore. she’s done too much damage to her face and has lost too much weight. i think she’s a wonderful actress, but i’m too distracted by the collagen that swells her upper lip. it’s sad because she usued to be so beautiful.

  • Lene

The landscape of Australia, a sweaty Hugh Jackman… I’m os there. I’ll just ignore Nicole Kidman (unless she snaps out of the botox-induced haze she’s been in for the past several years),

  • Jackie

Um, totally onboard! If only because my love for Australia only surpasses my love for Hugh Jackman (looking like a legit-grizzly cowboy!!!! yahooooo!!)
    Pumped.

  • Amy

    I’m intrigued.

  • Maria

Hugh Jackman bound to be shirtless AND using his Aussie accent in a movie?
    Yeah, I’m SO in.

  • Wes

I’m in. Wow. This is why you can’t rent every movie. Some things have to be seen on the big screen.

  • Patty

This is a WWII era movie? Somehow I was hoping for a prisoner transport era Australian epic. Oh, and I will pile-on on the NK face tranformation – nasty.

  • Chigurh

I shall flip a coin on this one.

  • digott

Initially it was Hugh Jackman’s involvement that drew me to this film. Now it’s the whole package. Each element is so creatively inspired. I’ll be there – more than once I dare say.

  • Susan

You couldn’t pay me to see a movie that includes Nicole Kidman.

  • Kate

I’m so in. Nicole, Hugh and Baz – I predict I am going to pee myself when the movie starts. I almost peed myself watching the trailer.

  • Francisco Salgueiro

WTH?! Has the real Baz been kidnaped? This is normal Hollywood stuff.

  • rustyalex

I can hardly wait to see this movie! I’ve been following it since Hugh Jackman became involved and the teaser only ramped up my anticipation. I’ll be seeing it multiple times on the big screen. I like the look of it, Hugh, the action, Hugh, the drama, Hugh, the romance, Hugh, thundering horses, Hugh. And did I mention – Hugh Jackman.

  • fernie

I’m SO excited for this movie! Baz Luhrmann is my favourite director, & 7 years between movies is a long time to wait. I have to say, judging from the trailer Australia looks pretty awesome. I’m a total sucker for sweeping, historical epic romances, but sadly it’s been a long, long time since there’s been a good movie like that. If anyone can pull it off, it’s Baz. I’ll be there opening night — this is definitely a ‘big screen’ movie, with all that gorgeous scenery.
(If I have one misgiving, it’s that yes, Nicole Kidman sadly seems to have destroyed her face, first with botox, & now it looks like lip injections. Such a shame, since back in Moulin Rouge, she was so beautiful & talented. Luckily, Hugh Jackman looks INCREDIBLY dashing & swoonworthy in this, so that should more than make up for her.)
PS – EW, I look forward to your cover story & gorgeous photo shoot on Australia this fall! (Please?)

  • Heather

I love Baz Luhrmann and I really want to support him but I’m not sure I get this preview. It looks a little too oaterish (although I realize it takes place in Australia) for my tastes. And where has that song been used before? I feel like it’s a popular trailer song.

  • Anne Marie

I actually would be more excited about this movie if Baz wasn’t directing. Don’t quite get him.

  • Chris Richards

I am not a Baz or Nicole fan, but i am usually willing to give anything a fair shake. The trailer was kind of bleh, though. The only possible saving grace looks to be Hugh, but he’s been in some junk before, so i dunno…..I am highly skeptical.

  • Amy

I guess Ms Yu doesn’t have a clue about how Baz Luhrmann works. You either get what he is doing or you don’t. Kidman’s character is not supposed to give the narrative away just the way the teaser is simply a series of images. Nothing about the plot just a series a gorgeous imagery. I mean, all we got was one dialogue each from Kidman and Jackman after the bit of the storytelling and that bit actually looks very different from the rest of the teaser. Almost like a tongue-tied introduction which is what it is. An introduction, not a narration.
Looking forward to it and seeing Kidman crack that whip! Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!
And as for Far and Away, it doesn’t take much to note that Ms Yu isn’t a smart carrot. Isn’t it the horses?
