The disappearance of Idol's Syesha Mercado!

Categories: American Idol, Idolatry

Dawnie Walton, Annie Barrett, and I break it on down…live from Central Park! Was it sabotage, was it simply Syesha’s time to go, or a little of both?

It’s all about the song choices. Maybe next year, they should take their cues from us, the viewers, the buying public. Give us a chance to tell them what they should sing for a change. We know what we want to hear. Leaving it in the hands of the judges, producers and even the contestants is not a particularly great idea.
Sye is gone because of song choice, same as everyone else before her.

Syesha had more talent in her little finger than David Archuleta has in his whole body. She is a star for sure…D.A. is an insecure, nervous little boy who doesn’t even have an established genre of music. I only hope NOW that David Cook will win on his TALENT and that this won’t be a teeny bopper win for minimally talented Archuleta!

Central Park in spring and witty observations, does it get any better than this?

  • tia

Yeah right, it would have been better cut to 3 minutes. Witty observations?Too much talk about nothing.

Well, Syesha has been fighting up a cliff for a while. With comments of Broadway haunting her the last several weeks, she waited too late to turn on the flow. She has sang very good in the last few shows and really deserved to be in the finals. David Artichoke should have been gone weeks ago. Every thing he sings sounds the same. Brooke should have lasted longer than him and spagetti head. This year has been disappointing as David Cook is the only one that has any real talent and anyone else that had talent was cut WAY too soon in the season. Even Chikeze should have lasted longer than David A. At least Chikeze was entertaining and lively. Well maybe David A will win so David Cook can get started on his career and not have to be a slave/puppet to AI for his recording contract. David A will need someone to lead him around for many years. He does have raw talent and that will get better in about 5 years, but he is a fish out of water right now.

It always bothered me how they never gave Syesha any positive feedback. Always negative comments from the judges…it was very hard for me to watch.

My votes were split between Syesha and David Cook. I agree that Archie has a great voice, but he is so one dimensional. In 4-6 years perhaps, he will be better……IF he wants it enough. David C. is ready NOW! and so is Syesha. I do believe she was doomed from the beginning to fall. I hope she lands something great on Broadway, and shows them all!!
David Cook should definitely be the American Idol for 2008. He will have all my votes……and my money too, when he cuts an album (CD).

    I loved this Idolatry.

  • Why oh why

Syesha had no talent and 0 fan, she was always at the bottom of every online poll. The only sabotage here is that the producers carried that deadweight to the top3. In two weeks everyone will have forgotten about that screamer and her fake personality.

  • @ Artichoke

“Brooke should have lasted longer than him and spagetti head.” Who is spaghetti head? What is a spaghetti head? LOL!

  • HannaB

Sabotage?? How can anyone even think that? Syesha was in the bottom 2 almost every week. Do a search online…she has the least number of fans of all the Top 12. The real sabotage happened the week before, when AI got rid of Jason Castro and kept the person who undoubtedly got much fewer votes than he did. Sheeesh

Two of the final four tried out just for the heck of it. The best two! One couldn’t believe he got that far and shot the tamborine man. (To the producers’ delight and with their help.) The other is in the final two. They’ve done well because viewers are getting tired of more of the same, but are also ambivelent about feeding human sacrifices into the AI machine. Archie wants it, and has been groomed for this all his life. But if you’re over 15, who wants to listen to him? Should Cook win, then spend years trying to show he’s more than the winner of a game show? Kelly and Carrie are successful, but it takes nerves of steel to pull it off. After this season, the AI people really need to rethink this show. More of the same is boring, but if someone ‘different’ wins, do they really?

I must say this is the best Video Commentary to date! I love the wonder-woman vids, and the extreme locale of your chats! Sad to see Idol go, because that means no more video updates!

  • AC

I’m probably the only one but I didn’t think the producer’s choice was that bad. It was her chance to show that she can fit into the top 40 market without any comparisons to some of the bigger stars, but she just didn’t do a very convincing job of it. Even if she did have a grand beautiful song, she would not have been able to get more votes than either of the Davids because she just doesn’t have enough fans. How exciting would it have been for a David vs Syesha finale? Boring! Also, I think her voice is good but part of it is a personality contest and hers is a little off-putting.

Ever since Carly left, I have been less psyched about idol (good thing I still have Cook). However, Idolatry has TOTALLY kept up my enthusiasm. In fact, I comforted myself when Carly left, b/c I would get to see her on Idolatry. What I am going to do without Slezak and co!!?!

  • socalgirl

Michael, you kinda look like Andrew Cook! There is a shot of him in KC that cuts back to you and, wow, the resemblance pops!

  • Fred Funk

Please post a transcript. Some of us are working and can’t watch this stuff.

  • socalgirl

I don’t think sabotage or conspiracy are involved in this at all. It’s simple market research at work. Only AI has the vote counts week in & week out. They have probably known for awhile that the Davids are a lock with their fan bases – never in the bottom 3 and probably very safe. I love the hidden messages at work now tho – DC was featured in the Ford video and got in the first car, he is in the center of every group shot they took as the final 3, Paula & Randy calling Syesha 3rd before the vote on Tuesday. My favorite was Paula telling DA that she doesn’t expect more from him when what she meant to say was she doesn’t expect LESS! That’s probably just Paula being Paula, but it made me laugh!

News Flash – #1 & #2 both start out as puppets to the AI recording contracts. If David A wins, I predict he will be the Ruben Studdard to David Cs Clay Aiken.

I think more than anything, and certainly sabotage, a lot of it had to do with connecting to the audience. Arch did early and so did Cook. I remember seeing early on that Cook was capturing the under 14 boys crowd. Obviously, they were then able to build on it. I don’t think Syesha ever really caught on early and by the end was left without a really solid base. Her early performances were also very dry. While being incredibly hot and sexy, she didn’t turn it on till later. On top of it, whether she is or not, she came across as a little into herself. She may be a truly warm and tender soul, but I think even the “go back home” highlights of last episode showed me a little something. David A cried because of all the people showing support and Cook cried because of the overwhelming support, but Syesha cried because this is what she always wanted. I am sure it is for the others as well, but she said it. I understand editing so maybe they just poorly edited it for her.

  • Carrie

Regardless where DC comes in , he will out sell DA. Come on , really who would want to listen to DA’s voice and imagine the squint and wet lips. Now David Cook I will buy and think about how sexy he is while listening .He is the most sellable talent.

I’ve just gotta say (1) I’m far too old to be taking any of this stuff seriously, so (2) thank you all for “keepin’ it real, dawgs” and helping me laugh at all this and maintaining some perspective, as well as forcing us all to take a look behind the wizard’s curtain and call an Idol an idol! Sometimes its easy to sit back and let the “magic” (such as it is) of Idol wash over you in a matrix of Swaybot acceptance, but I love the way you guys call ‘em as you see ‘em and encourage us all to swallow the red pill. You have added a new dimension to my Idol enjoyment! By the way, a big solid shout out to the editor of “Idolatry”! The clips of KLC leveling Tokyo and Wonder Woman doing whatever the heck Wonder Woman does were all priceless and totaly on target! You made them your own! (I did NOT just say that! I have got to start watching more PBS.) Anyway, thanks for the commentary & the laughs! Until next season, keep reaching for all the colors in the rainbows!

Syesha had no real shot of making the final two but the producers took the extra steps to make sure there were no doubts about it. The “Happy Feet” song choice was ludicrously bad, even for “Idol” standards.

    Little Davey Archuleta is giggly

Syesha actually got quite a bit of positive feedback in the final weeks that she was there–although I agree that they were hard on her the last week. But I also think that she made a mistake in the manner in which she presented herself during “Fever”. I think that she was trying to present a different image rather than focusing on her singing.

  • Sandra

If you want to talk about sabotage, how about the report that Clive Davis, who hates David Cook, has picked songs for Cook and Archuleta to sing in the final plus the rumor that the coronation song is ‘Here I Am’. If this is all true, you’ll be doing Sabotage Part II next week.

  • Nina

To Why oh Why, F*** you, Syesha must have some fans if she beat out frontrunners like Michael & Carly. Syesha is way more versatile and talented than David Archeluta ever was this whole season. Boring me to death does not make a good American Idol, real people like me and not some annoying teen girls actaully want to see and hear interesting singers and not robots like David Archeluta.

  • Russell A. Smith

Syesha was robbed. Cook is the best of the group. Simon and especially Randy sabotaged everyone they could to get the Disney Kid and Cook in the finals. They did all they could with their very caustic, false, and personally offensive remarks to Syesha in an effort to manipulate public opinion. Randy even referred to Syesha as “Standing up there in third place.” Sorry Dog, it was a little too disingenuous for me. How about some artistic integrity, personal integrity, and less focus on all those idol contracts you have a piece of, Dog? As for Simon, no wonder we won the revolution . . .

  • palais

You gave me MechaKristy Lee. You gave me Bambilicious Brooke. You gave me TeleArchie. You gave me Wonder Syesha. And people wonder why I love you and your snark, Slezak.

  • BettyLee

Syesha has talented but I never remembered what she sang in the past weeks. All are forgettable because she was not really outstanding of the contestants. It was her broadway show and screaming voice that made me think of her. DA, DC, Jason and Brook’s performances and songs that I remembered well. So good luck Syesha!!
