Slezak, I love you. Your videos this year have been amazing.

  • Cam

Actually that last part with Cook and Syesha put together made me all happy inside: Kick out Archuleta! Cannot stand the little boy wonder with permanent eyesight and breathing problems.

  • mags

Aww, Slezak, you’re being too harsh on Jason; why would he have wanted to stay when the judges clearly would have hated anything he did? AI was intent on ousting him and he knew it. He was refreshingly real, and that made him a bad fit for the show, which seems to celebrate “types” (the rocker, the balladeer, the diva) rather than true individuals. I know that some will say that Jason fits the “stoner” type, but his exit interview here on ew.com shows just how thoughtful and articulate he is. It was the right time for him to leave; I just wish the show hadn’t been so cruel in how it treated/depicted him these last few weeks.

  • Kiersten

Why is it that others can forget their lyrics, but when Jason does it, it is labeled as , “Not Trying”?
If he had broken down in tears a la Brooke White, would you have percieved it differently?
Once again Jason is being penalized for being a grounded, well adjusted person who realizes this is a singing competition and not a meeting of his fate at the Pearly Gates!
Hopefully when you talk to him in person you will realize that he WAS trying, but AI is not a structure that nurtures artists who prefer to feel and interpret their music instead of just belting it out.

  • BrandonK

Why in the world did David Cook record “Hungry Like the Wolf” instead of “Baba O’Reilly” for his iTunes song? (It would have been nice if they recorded all of the performance songs…I wanted his second song last week, too.)

  • ZF

Through seven seasons, there have been a lot of contestants who embodied the Peter Principle. They rose to their level of incompetence, but seemed totally oblivious to it. Are we supposed to be mad at Jason Castro for recognizing that he’s out of his depth now?

  • Suzanne

thank God you’re here EW to help get us all mad about the all-davids finale that we have no control over. If only the public had a way to render an opinion or, perhaps, “vote” for the best contestants? If only … if only.

  • NineDaves

syesha as wonder woman = priceless. honestly the best thing i have seen to date. and stephen – i’m all for a en vogue american idol all star group. just put mandisa and vonzell in there too, okay?

I dream of a David Cook -Syesha finally. If only…

ok… BEST. IDOLATRY. EVER. You know how people write lol? Well this time I actually did LOL — loud! And when you edited Syesha’s spins to the WONDER WOMAN theme, I may have even LMFAO. Well done! Wonder Woman… You’re amazing!

  • Angela

Slezak I’m disappointed this week! Jason had kick a** performances this week, aside from a brief lyrical miss which he recovered from and still did a marvelous job on Mr. Tambourine Man! I’m disappointed that you think he wasn’t trying especially since he said in all his interviews that he was giving it his all. I think his song choices really reflected who he was and I thought you would have liked I Shot the Sheriff and the fact that it was a big eff you to the man (i.e. AI machine)! I’m really sad that you couldn’t look past the fact that he forgot the lyrics, which every other contestant (some several times in fact) has done this season. I have to disagree with you because I am a huge Jason fan and would have loved to see him in the top 3! BTW a David C. v. Syesha finale would make me cringe!! However, the Syesha as wonder woman thing was hilarious! I wish you had given Jason a little respect but I still love ya and think you are hilarious!

  • Tina

Well, I see your on the run over Jason bandwagon now. I’m getting sick and tired of people saying that Jason did’nt try. In my opinion, his performance Tuesday was the ONLY interesting and entertaining one. Jason did’nt give us the same ‘ol song and dance- like the rest of the contestants- he really let go, missed lyrics and all. And I don’t believe for one minute that he got the least votes. If you knew anything about our fanbase, you would’nt either.

  • Jenna Von Oy

Slezak on the run-over-Jason bus? Are you kidding? He fawned over his performances, even “Memories,” all season long and just because he finally gives the guy serious criticism doens’t make him part of a vast all-David conspiracy. Get real.

  • Lisa

I agree with Tina. I’m so sick and tired of people saying that Jason stopped trying. His performances of I Shot the Sheriff and Mr. Tambourine Man were great even if he did lose some lyrics. It’s not the first time a contestant this season forgot the lyrics, and Jason got through it nicely. Also, I will NEVER ever believe that Syesha got more votes than Jason. Sure, she has a nice voice and all, but her fanbase can’t even compare with Jason’s or either of the Davids.

  • ilana

Michael Slezak this year of idolatry is been amazing!
The kristi lee robot, the bambi brooke and now this… priceless!

  • Rita

Jason was trying all he did was foirget his lyrics. Excuse me? when Archuleta and Brooke forgot theirs no one accused them of giving up.. JAson just got soo underpraised this couple of weeks. Starting with Memories which was great and was bashed by ALW and the judges i have no idea why. Then came Paulagate and she even admitted she didnt hear FOrever in Blue Jeans which was great!! Then I shot the sheriff and Mr. Tambourine Man which were really cool and entertaining. It’s not that he stopped trying it was just that no matter what he did he was never going to get praised anymore. This show is rigged!!!

  • steveforbertfan

Jason is a stoner!, he deserved to go. Archuleta has had an unfair advantage, his father coaching and helping him pick songs, thank God he was booted out.
Sayesha is HUNGRY! David Cook just ROCKS!

  • Houstonian Jen in DC

Slezak, I’m with you about Jason. I think he stopped trying–I understand why he would feel so dejected, but I would have preferred an “I’m going to sound awesome and have fun despite you B****es!” attitude from him. It felt like a wasted turn. Would have even preferred Brooke to have that opportunity—and I wasn’t a big Brooke fan.
In other news, the Syesha = Wonder Woman clips were HILARIOUS! I almost fell out of my bed. It was so funny, I had to watched that part twice. Keep up the good work, kids.

Michael: Yure buying into the spin. You’re not doing your research. Did you listen to Jason’s interviews? He’s a perfectionist. He practises very hard. Carly said this. It’s a fact. Did you take a listen to his studio Mr. Tambourine Man on iTUNES. Fantastic! Vocal coach gave him highest adjudication (9.25) for that night’s performances. You’re going to be surprised when this bandwagon leaves you in the dust if you aren’t a journalist riding with the truth on his side. He said “Vote, vote!” He would have done his three songs to perfection despite his humility. He got lots more votes than Syesha but they kicked him off anyway. Man, aren’t you reading the facts outside the AI propaganda. Saddle up on a real horse, not the kiddie merry-go-rund where you’re riding the circle of deception. Come on, you’re a writer man. Dig!! or bite the dust. From a fellow writer

MICHAEL — you fell for the ruse. There is no way Jason got less votes than Syesha, whether you believe his performance was weakest or not. The AI “machine” found a way to oust him, and that they did. Jason may have opened the window, but AI pushed him out. His loyal fans, including the powerful and numerous Aggies, CERTAINLY did not leave him hanging. We voted in record numbers, and I am disappointed in your bailing on Jason, too. Tsk, tsk. You should know better. Look into the contract the contestants sign. Look for the part about producers being able to determine the final outcome. Look carefully! We will NEVER abandon our uber-talented Jason Castro. He is AND will always be THE true American Idol of Season 7.

  • kana

    Lame. Boring.

  • Anonymous

Oh boy, it sounds like Jason Castro fans are becoming the new version of Claymates, where they will defend him without objectivity no matter how horrible he sounds.

Micheal, I always enjoy your articles and interviews on Idolatry. I understand your disappointment and frustration with your boy,Jason last Tuesday. I was surprised the night went down the way it did myself. But, I disagreed with you that he “phoned” in the performances. To me, he was pumped (alot more so that ND week)and seemed to be having fun with ISTS. I wish he had picked a different song for sure, but he was trying. And besides dropping the lyric on the Dylan song, it sounded really good to me. But him dropping the lyric sealed his fate. It was so obvious that Simon wanted him gone after Round 1, that even if he had sung MTM well, he wouldn’t have gotten the credit he deserved. I’ll really miss Jason and totally believe him that he said “vote, vote”. Its obvious he is not lying in his interviews. Jason is a class act and was misunderstood by so many this season. I support him 100% and can’t wait for him to make a record. Don’t give up on him!

  • Dashing4

I just watched it too and was disappointed..but I think Michael was honestly really upset with Jason’s performances based on his article he wrote the day after. He has been such a fan and defender of Jason this season and he almost acted hurt in the article. I think he had expected Jason to do really well and he felt like he let his fans down. Based on some friends of mine’s opinion they felt the same way.
On Idolatry, I was surprised that he thought Jason “phoned” in his performances. To me, Jason seemed very pumped and put alot into ISTS..and besides dropping the lyric in MTM, he did really well. I totally believe he is telling the truth with the “vote vote” thing. You can tell in his interviews, he is sincere. Although, I understand your frustration, don’t give up on Jason!

  • Dashing4

sorry, for posting twice, i didn’t think my first went through, so I redid! oops!

  • Kathy

Michael, I have enjoyed all your commentaries up til now. Since with did you join that sham of the AI execs? I totally enjoyed Jason Castro’s songs last week. Yes, he forgot the lyric to a portion of one song under pressure but the way he handled it was pure professionalism. All others have too. At least he didn’t make the band start over like Brook. No way in he** do I believe he came in last place either. NO WAY that syesha got more votes than him. I don’t know a soul that likes her or votes for her. No one votes or liked Syesha. AI producers just decided to oust Jason and put her in 3rd place. No where did they say he got the least votes. Also, someone that works for the show said he saw the voting results and that Jason came in 2nd and Syesha last. Jason was just too much trouble for AI. He didn’t do things their way but he did things his own way. He has HUGE fan base that voted for him in record numbers.
Go listen to his studio version of Tamborine man. Its wonderful!

  • Tina

I’m noticing how none of the Jason haters are adressing the fact that Jason was the ONLY one who stepped outside of his box that night. Syesha stayed in her actress box, and IMO did’nt emote the songs -not even her tears moved me. David C stayed in his angst rocker box. His doo da doo’s were annoying the heck out of me, in his first song. And his second song was nothing different from what he’s been doing week after week (except ALW). And Archie never steps out of his programmed box.Jason was a spark, in an otherwise dark and dreary room.
