Who do you have to see in concert before you die?

Tagged:

Tinaturner_lLast Thursday, I happened to catch the same Dolly Parton concert at Radio City Music Hall that my colleague Mandi Bierly so amusingly blogged about. Recounting the highlights to friends and family this weekend, however, I kept hearing the same question: "Dolly? Really? I didn’t think you were a big country fan." But let’s be real, if you’re a fan of being alive on this planet right now, then you ought to be able to appreciate the one-of-a-kind appeal of Dolly. And since I wasn’t aware (prior to her concert) that Parton has no plans to retire (ever) — it’s her goal, in fact, to drop dead on stage, mid-performance! — I figured I’d better not procrastinate.

Similarly, there’s no way I am going to miss Tina Turner’s latest tour, which Billboard reports will kick off October 1 in Kansas City, Mo. Unlike so many of her colleagues, Turner (pictured at this year’s Grammys)actually waited eight years to follow up her 2000 "farewell" dates — long enough to make me think she might actually make good on her promise of retirement. This time around, I’m not taking any chances, and plan to bear witness (and boogie unrepentantly) as Turner burns through (hopefully) "Nutbush City Limits," "Better Be Good to Me," "Proud Mary," and "I Can’t Stand the Rain." I’ll also add to my request list "Foreign Affair," an underappreciated gem from her 1989 album of the same name, which I’ve embedded after the jump.

Any of you guys planning to catch Turner in concert? And more importantly, who’s atop your "concert bucket list" and why?

I’m going to figure out how to turn back time so I can see Led Zeppelin.

I am 26 years old and have been a huge fan of Tina my whole life. there is no way I’m going to miss this. I have always told my friends I have to see Tina live before either she or me die. I love her.

ML, let me know when you get the time machine figured out, so I can see Queen with Freddie Mercury.
Also: Old 97′s, Death Cab for Cutie, Decemberists, Weird Al Yankovic, Ben Folds.

Because I missed out on a couple of acts that I wish I had seen live 1.) Jeff Buckley and 2. Nirvana, I have made a point of going out of my way to see acts I like.
The only one remaining is The Allman Brothers at New York’s Beacon Theatre, which I would have been seeing this week if not for Gregg’s illness. Hopefully next time around!

I totally agree with Lauren about Queen with Freddie. And while we’re wishing for things impossible, throw in the Beatles and Elvis. Alive? David Bowie (again), Tina for sure, and Willie Nelson. (One of these things is not like the other…)

I’ll be seeing Tina for sure.
Alas, the only act I desperately want to see live is ABBA, and there is no chance in that.

I saw Tina on the 2000 tour, and I highly recommend anyone who’s never seen her live before go now, go soon, go often – she’s amazing.
I’m old (43), so I’ve either already seen most of my ‘bucket list’ at least once (Tina, Bob Dylan, the Police, U2, REM, the Ramones, Iggy Pop, k.d. lang, Elvis Costello, the Chieftains) or I know I never will (the Beatles, Elvis Presley). I sort of feel like I should see the Rolling Stones, but I’m not passionate about it any more – if somebody comes up with that time machine, I want to borrow it to see the Stones in around 1968 – but not at Altamont, please.
Bruce Springsteen. I’ll say Bruce Springsteen. I’ve never been able to afford tickets, and he’s still pretty fab. Elton John is another one I’d see if I ever won the lottery. I’m also hoping to catch Pearl Jam this summer, but I won’t die unfulfilled if I don’t.

Having seen Tina Turner multiple times in my life, I can safely say, I’ll pass this time around. Having seen her in her prime, bruises from Ike and all, makes seeing her now a disappointment.
Yes, I know she’s 70, (And she is 70 cause she’s 20 years older than her son, who I dated.) and it’s great she can still get on stage, but that no reason to spend $100 to see her do it.
I’d rather remember her in all her hair flinging, high kicking glory. The woman was a force of nature in her time.

I was actually telling my mother the other day that I was sad we hadn’t seen Tina. Which is why I saw Bruce Springsteen a week ago, why I didn’t pass up the chance to see Fleetwood Mac, and why, if I ever get the chance, I will make the effort to see Tina. Because she is Tina.

I’m not a huge concert person, but I have to see Madonna… she never comes to Minneapolis anymore, though, and she sells out before I can access the nearest market (Chicago).

Daft Punk and The Verve were on my list for a long, long time. But I managed to see both in the past year.
Now the only band left is Boards Of Canada. But they never tour! :@

they rarely come to america, and last time they were here, i happened to be away on business (damn you job!). but i’ve considered flying across the country to see a junior senior show. i realize they’re not as popular (or influential) as, say, elton, billy, bruce, etc., but they make my heart sing.

Robbie Williams and Bette Midler top my Concert Bucket List. I’ve been fortunate to see Elton John (from the front row on his piano-only tour!), Tina Turner and Madonna, none of whom I’m a huge fan, but they’re definite must-sees.

Since I’m still young and already knocking off artists on my bucket list. I just saw Springsteen which made for an amazing show. But my number one has stayed constant for years….Tom Waits. He only tours like once every 2-3 years and never comes to the Midwest. And it was announced today that he is touring this summer but won’t come even close to my lovely home in Wisconsin. Oh well someday hopefully.

We paid an outrageous sum of money to see the Eagles later this month because, well, they’re the Eagles. And because they’re not getting any younger.
ML – please let me know too when you get your time machine running. I missed out on The Police when I was in high school and I’m still kicking myself. I’m sorry about Led Zep….
Jayel – go see the Stones! They may be old but they can still put on a show!
I guess the only one left on my bucket list is Bob Dylan. I’m still sorry I couldn’t get tickets for Dyland and the Dead.
