Remember last week when we said Hilary Duff might be joining the cast of the new 90210 spin-off? Well, it looks like that’s not happening so much. According to E! Online, the 20-year-old singer/actress has passed on the role of Annie Mills to expand her image through more grown-up opportunities.
Call me crazy, but I was actually surprised when Duff was offered the role, because I already think of her as a grown-up (is that wrong?). I know it’s de rigueur for 20-somethings to play small screen teens (see: Gossip Girl, Smallville, One Tree Hill, etc.), but I miss the days when actual teenagers played teens. But just as I was beginning to lose my faith in casting, the heavens parted and manna began falling from the sky in the form of 18-year-old Shenae Grimes. This real-life teen and Degrassi: The Next Generation alum (does anyone watch this show besides my colleague Lisa?) will take on the theater-nerd role. But it gets even better. Her mom will be played by none other than Aunt Becky. Yes, that’s right, Lori Loughlin (pictured) from our favorite ’90s sitcom Full House (my 12-year-old self may have cried when that show ended).
So what do you think, PopWatchers? Are you excited Loughlin has a new role since Summerland was canceled? Are you one of the few people who actually watches Degrassi?

I love degrassi!! i love when i see kids from that show in movies and such…and i cant wait for that show..hopefully it will be as good as the original..
I love Degrassi! Did you see Paige in Take the Lead? The first time she came on screen I got wayyy too excited.
Um, hello. Huge Degrassi: The Next Generation fan here! *waving*
I’m happy for Shenae even though I never really thought she was that good of an actress. Sarah (Liberty), Lauren (Paige) and Stacey (Ellie) are better actresses than Shenae. At least someone from Degrassi besides Lauren is stepping out of the zone. I mean, that show can’t go on forever even if that’s what the-N and Canada wants.
I think shenae is gorgeous and would make a great addition to the cast
but aunt becky! even better! I’m hoping uncle jesse and his hair plugs will make a cameo at some point
I watch Degrassi too. I’m kind of glad to see Darcy go.
After Aunt Becky I thought it couldn’t get any better. Then they added Lucille Bluth. How did I go from looking down on this show to secretly stoked about it in 2 days?
Lori Laughlin is so plastic-surgeried up and gross…I suppose that works well with the whole Beverly Hills thing though.
I have cousins who are in high school in Toronto and Degrassi is a way of life up there.
I’ll still give this 90210 thing a shot, but I’m not too thrilled with Lori being on it. Hilary would have made me watch, though.
Lori Loughlin being cast on the show is fine with me…. just as long as they didn’t put Hilary Duff on the show. I swear, Hilary Duff is sooooo annoying and has little talent. I can’t believe she’s famous!
Degrassi may be one of the most ridiculous shows I have ever seen, and a type of show I would under most circumstances refuse to watch, but for some reason, it is just damn GOOD. The drama is farfetched, the acting is terrible for the most part, and the plotlines are twisted, but perhaps these faults are what make it so endearing. Even Kevin Smith guest starred on this show–it’s gotta be amazing!
loved Degrassi~
love Aunt Becky and
love the Duffster

watch degrassi? i live for degrassi.
I love degrassi. you’re right. it’s just one of those shows that you have to watch.
i never really liked darcy on the show, but shenae was really stepped up her game with her recent storyline (her previous storyline was bs). It was obvious that the producers and such were pimping her character because she was young enough to stay at degrassi for another year. with her leaving degrassi now, it hurts the continuation of that show. and that kinda disappoints me. I for one, won’t be watching this new unnecessary remake of 90210.
I love DeGrassi way too much for someone in their mid-twenties. I was sssooooo excited to see Sean as the jock guy in Juno, I actually punched my friend in the arm, only she never watched the show. Too bad Darci is my least favorite of the Canadian kids.
wait, “theatre-nerd”? What’s that supposed to mean?
I love the original Degrassi, I watched it growing up each week on CBC. It was kids actually my age dealing with the same type of problems, or potential problems, as my friends and I. Sometimes they were silly issues, while other times they were quite serious topics. 90210 never did it for me, I could never relate and for some reason I couldn’t just let go and let the show be mindless entertainment for me. Perhaps it was because the characters were supposed to be my age but I knew no one who looked or acted that way.
OMG, I love Degrassi! (I am 31, not 15, for the record.) I heard about Shenae getting cast in the new 90210 yesterday, and my immediate first thought was, “What’s going to happen to Darcy on Degrassi!?” I really need to get a life.
And BTW, now that Darcy and Aunt Becky are on the new 90210 — and that cutie from Dirt’s last season, I forget his name — I am totally watching!
I watched the original Degrassi, and now the next generation. I LOVE that show. The new remake of 90210 though?….no brandon, no brenda, no dylan, i’ll pass
I love Degrassi!! I’m sort of a newbie to the series though, just began to watch it this year, but I’m caught up to season 3 and it’s pretty good! I don’t think I’ve seen the girl you’re talking about, but from reading the comments, I guess she plays Darcy, lol. I might check out 90210. I like Lori Loughlin. She was great in “Full House” and I’ve only seen some episodes of “Summerland”, but it wasn’t bad. Definitely better than “The OC”!
Love “Degrassi”!! But not Shenae Grimes (shudder)…
I’m another one who absolutely loves Degrassi and Shenae as Darcy. Sad that she’s leaving the show for 90210, but that’s just extra incentive to check it out next fall.
