Snap judgment: Fergie's 'Sex and the City' tune

Fergie_lA couple weeks ago, EW’s Missy Schwartz broke the news that Fergie had recorded a new song called "Labels or Love" for Sex and the City: The Movie. "It’s an entirely new song with lyrics," director Michael Patrick King promised, "but it has the Sex and the City theme as the DNA — on steroids."

I’m of a few minds here. The lyrics are a crass ode to conspicuous consumption; Fergie’s imitated the very worst of SATC, replicating its designer-name-dropping surface with none of its heart. She might be aiming for a wink-wink, modern-day "Material Girl" vibe, but to me, the words of "Labels or Love" feel more like Gwen Stefani’s loathsome "Luxurious," a song whose unironically materialistic attitude made me want to smash in the radio of the car wherein I first heard it. (And as Idolator points out, these hyper-commercial themes are also oddly out of step with our economically dismal times.) It’s no great shakes musically, either. Why sample the SATC theme song only to waste it on dime-a-dozen synths instead of that signature piano twinkle?

But you know what? Somehow I don’t hate "Labels or Love." I know I should, but I don’t. "Love’s like a runway…" — I couldn’t disagree more, but that hook is just so catchy! I even enjoy the part where she tries to rap, somewhat tragically ("Gucci, Fendi, Prada purses, purchasing them finer things / Men, they come a dime a dozen, just give me them diamond rings"). Okay, okay: You win again, Fergie Ferg. I give up in the face of your ability to create pop gold out of the most ridiculous subject matter imaginable. Anyone else in the same boat?

I really dislike this song. I am totally getting worried about the SATC movie. This along with the J Hudson quote in teh trailer about moving to NYC “to fall in love” is just terrible. If Michael Patrick King is excited baout this song – I am offically nervous..

So, if the movie sucks, but all the cool people go to see it and it makes a buttload, is it a flop?
Songtracks are tricky: do you use already-made material, or do you create new songs? The latter always seems like a bad idea to me.

    Fergie is awful. Period.

Awful, awful,AWFUL song. It’s basically a clone of Fergie’s equally terrible “Glamorous.”
For some reason, the Black Eyed Peas have become the “go to” “musicians.” They were at Live Earth,Princess Diana’s memorial,Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” rehash.
    When will this end????

They should have used “Fashionista” by Jimmy James. Hopefully, it will be included on the soundtrack.

“Labels & Love” is actually kinda cute, but I was hoping “Finally” would have been a hit for Fergie, but it seems they’ve stopped working that song in favor of this new single. The Fergie re-issue of “The Dutchess” & the soundtrack drops May 27th & here’s the track list for the SATC Soundtrack:
    1. “Labels or Love” – Fergie
    2. “All Dressed In Love” – Jennifer Hudson
    3. “The Look Of Love” (Madison Park vs Lenny B Remix) – Nina Simone
    4. “New York Girls” – Morningwood
    5. “All This Beauty” – The Weepies
    6. “I Like The Way” – Kaskade
    7. “It’s Amazing” – Jem
    8. “How Deep Is Your Love” – The Bird & The Bee
    9. “The Heart Of The Matter” – India.Arie
    10. “Auld Lang Syne” – Mairi Campbell & Dave Francis
    11. “Kissing” – Bliss
    12. “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” – Al Green featuring Joss Stone
    13. “Walk This Way” – Run-D.M.C. featuring Steve Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith
    14. “Sex and the City Movie Theme” – The Pfeifer Broz. Orchestra

I figured this topic is something Slezak would have written about. He is the resident Fergie Ferg expert!I wouldn’t go to SVL for his opinions on pop songs (anyone who can’t appreciate the guilty pleasures of Gwen Stefani is dead to me).

I love SATC!! I didn’t at first, but now, I do. Fergie is hit or miss! The song is okay, but as with many of her songs, they have the potential to grow on you. I agree with Lou; the J Hudson line in the movie “to fall in love” is aweful. I am not worried about the movie..but I think that they could have chosen a better line for her to say…Keep an open mind!! Hope for the best!!!

The song is unlistenable. Fergie is no friend of mine! Still excited about the movie though…

I’m with you. I know this song is bad and I’m supposed to hate it but I don’t. It kinda of grew on me after a couple of listens. I find her attempt at rapping a little catchy….

  • BrandonK

Aw, that doesn’t sound like Sex and the City at all! Boo.

  • Blue4U1980

really? REALLY? umm … with a woman who sings lyrics like “I’m not gonna miss you like a child misses it’s blanket” … (to this day that lyric markes me want to reach through the radio and slap her and whoever wrote it) … is anyone really even surprised that her song sucks? REALLY?

  • Me

This song is pretty hot! It’s really catchy and the way it ties into the whole story of love and designs wit SATC is really cool.
If this is released as a single: #1 potential!

  • monica

i think it’s ok, but it’s not very SATC.
