I need to read more closely. I thought for some reason you picked “Tell Me on a Sunday” for Brooke. Anyway I think she’d be better suited for that song, and Carly can do an up tempo song like “Buenos Aires.”
Idol and Christian music should not be combined. I love passionate songs about healthy and happy love. However, prayer is not mainstream music unless you have a gospel choir and Ms. Franklin. As a Jew, I mute the songs because it’s just too much. If I was a non-religious contestant, I would have felt very awkward during “Shout to the Lord”
Funny that you mention the fan. While I was watching her, I was thinking it was like that Paul Reiser stand-up special where he keeps seeing a beautiful woman who seems to have a breeziness about her. It turns out that she has a small fan strapped to her ankle.
Okay…I’m glad it’s not me that feels like I’m being preached at here. Although the song IS mainly a secular song, the show’s intent is clear. Look at the closing shot on the song, where all of the contestants are holding their mics out like they’re praying, with the “heavenly” light blasting, and then tell me they weren’t going for a spiritual impact.
Your Christian-phobia is a little too cynical, dude. Methinks thou dost protesteth too much, ya know what I’m sayin’? Well-writtne songs about God or his Son are vastly preferable to those about cheating, lusting and revenge. But maybe that’s just me…
I’m not a fan of all the Christian music either.
I really don”t want to see BRILLO HEAD one more week. Can”t someone please give her some hair products. They were even able to help Kim Locke”s unruly locks..
Aww I love “Close Every Door,” even if it is dreary. And thanks so much for pointing us towards that Huffington Post article. It made the perfect point: That there’s nothing wrong with the contestants singing Christian songs if it is their individual choice, but there is a problem when it a statement from the show in the form of a group number and puts any participant who would rather not perform it in a very awkward position. Elliot Yamin is Jewish, and I wonder how he would handled something “Shout to the Lord” if he was asked to sing it in a group number – because, as the HP article point out, no one wants to be the contestant that refused to sing and evangelical Christian song.
Thanks for the wrap-up, as always just wonderfully written. I too started getting a soft spot for KLC and just knew she would be the last woman standing…but now it’s looking like Syesha just might pull off the last woman standing…because Brooke just cannot possibly continue to make it to the safe seat. She is just too wimpy. And that piano playing she does? It’s not piano playing, it’s plucking chords while she sings. Poor thing needs to take lessons.
I love christian music, there is not a thing wrong with it. I am a christian and there are a lot of us
christians out there, that also love
that type of music. So, live up it ot turn it off.
What about “I don’t know how to love him” from Jesus Christ Superstar for Brooke? With the guitar it could be pretty awesome.

Wow, I don’t even watch this show and read your entire blog entry! Whittlz, my girl crush on you continues… As for the “Jesus” controversy, I’m with Michael Giltz from HuffPo on this one. If you’re going to sing a gospel song, sing it as is. But don’t make everyone sing it as a group song. (Full disclosure: I’m a church-going Christian.)
I love the show Bones, it was great to see a mention of it here.
Sorry, why should I be offended that they mentioned Jesus a few times again? I never want to miss out on a chance to be offended!
