Sacrebleu, a Eurovision scandal!

The name-calling has started early in this year’s Eurovision — a bizarre annual singing competition pitting European states against one another, like Idol with more vicious nationalism. The finals won’t even start for another month, but members of the French government are already furiously denouncing their own country’s representative for the unforgivable crime of singing in English instead of en Français. Faced with intense pressure from France’s creepily titled "minister for cooperation," singer Sebastien Tellier relented today and agreed to add some more French lyrics to his song. Way to go, freedom of expression!

But you know what? There’s a way more problematic issue here. Namely, the fact that Tellier’s tune — what’s the bon mot I’m looking for? — sucks. (The video’s below; potentially NSFW if your office has a problem with greasy-looking group baths.) I mean, the melody is sorta pleasant (emphasis on the sorta), but those keyboards and drum machines… oof. This sounds like it was programmed from a "My First Casio" demo loop, and not in a good way. Pourquoi, Sebastien, pourquoi? It’s not as if France is suffering from a shortage of talented synth-pop producers!

So! What do you think of Sebastien Tellier’s unique musique? And what would you say are the chances that Tellier is actually a clone of, and/or another ironic character played by, Russell Brand?

    Le Skunk du Phew!

Serious bizness: the more French is protected, the less it will be spoken. Joss Whedon was probably correct when he postulated a lingua franca (and that term in itself is so ironic) of English grammar and conjugation with extensive Chinese vocabulary.

You do realize that the song (and his album) was produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo from Daft Punk, right? I love this song.

Why do you have to be soooo short-minded and so first degree here? Sebastien Tellier is one of the most interesting French artists right now, lots of people say he’s the new Gainsbourg, and by the way the great Serge has won Eurovision once with a VERY cheesy and light pop song just like tis one! This song is perfect for Eurovision : ironic, well-produced and trendy… Way to go with the cheesy ballades that give us (i’m French) the last spot every year! This one can seriously make France win and I hope it will! Eurovision is all about humor, pop and entertainment, in case you didn’t know…

In a country where Jerry Lewis and Johnny Halliday are admired a nerdy singer like Tellier can be a hero with a kindergarten-song. With their minds stuck in the seventies, the bigger countries of continental Europe, France, Germany and Italy, are not able to contribute anything to the world of music but camembert copies of Anglo-Saxon ideas.

yes the song might be cheesy but that is what eurovision wants, some of the best winners, ABBA, Bucks Fizz all played on the cheesy pop to win the contest. The British, French and Spanish no they are never going to win due to the political voting. so they just have some fun check out the spanish entry for this years entry. its amazing!

I loved it! It’s catchy pop! A lot better than any pop we have here!

Hey, I’m just happy EW is mentioning Eurovision at all. I love it and look forward to it each year. Bring on the scandal, political block voting and cheesy Europop! My money is on Latvia or Estonia this year, based entirely on camp factor alone.
