The movie subjects you can't resist

Schindlerslistfiennes_lSo last night, I’m talking with my friend Tamara about what film we should see this weekend, and she begins the negotiations with, "Would you see a Holocaust movie?" She meant, "Can we see The Counterfeiters?", but she didn’t lead with the title because to her, it doesn’t actually matter. She will watch any movie having to do the Holocaust: "If Paris Hilton was in a Holocaust movie, I’d see it." That is an actual quote.

After a brief discussion about how wrong it is that she found Ralph Fiennes attractive in Schindler’s List (pictured) — I couldn’t technically judge her, having found Sean Penn inexplicably hot in Dead Man Walkingwe realized that this is the flip-side to the 50 Actors We’d Watch in Anything. There are films we’ll each see, regardless of who stars in them, because we’re fascinated by a particular subject or are a sucker for a certain genre. So, what’s your weakness? I can be talked into sitting through any romantic comedy — if the plot involves a city girl slowing her life down, returning to her hometown, or inheriting the children of a relative.

Also, should you want to confess that time that you found an actor or actress attractive in a role that you shouldn’t have, feel free. You’re among friends.

I watch any and all superhero movies. If there’s a comic book original, I’m at the theaters or Blockbuster trying to find it. I am counting down the days until Ironman and Dark Knight. Oh, yeah, FIRST!!

  • Cara

Heist movies. I will see any movie that involves attractive men stealing things through cleverly impossible means. I even watched “The Bank Job” a couple weeks back, because, come on–it was a HEIST movie!

  • Eve

I’m a huge Ralph Fiennes fan. Not only did I find him quite attractive in “Schindler’s List”…I hate to admit it…but I thought he was pretty hot in “Red Dragon” too. Is that so wrong?

  • Snsetblaze

Zombie movies – even really bad ones.

  • Tracey

I agree – Ralph Fiennes was gorgeous in Schindler’s List. The movie was horrifying, I cried, I felt all the right emotions. But he was too difficult to resist. On a side note, I found him attractive as Voldermort in Harry Potter 4. God, I am so ashamed. As we were walking out of the theater my sister said, “Wasn’t Voldermort scary?” I said, “Scary? More like sexy!” Hee!

Fantasy movies…especially medieval fantasy, even the bad ones. I mean…I actually LIKED the Dungeons and Dragons movie. Even if one is bad (::cough::Eragon::cough::) it usually provides hillarious MST style value. This kind of overflows into historical fiction/period movies. My other used to be animated movies, but since the advent of 3d computer animation, I’m not as quick to go anymore unless it looks good. Any traditional 2d cel animation and I’m there, this is one of the huge reasons I’m an anime nut.

Not that I’m a fan of slasher flicks or movies that make you go “Now what just happened?” once the credits start to roll… but Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho is downright sexy – especially running down the hall with nothing but a strategically-placed chainsaw.
As for the genre I’m a sucker for – anything featuring a band’s rise or fall. That Thing You Do!, This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, heck even Rock Star. The music is in my blood, I guess.

  • Meghan

I’m a sucker for Captain Jack Sparrow…even with the rotten teeth and the dreads…I love it!

  • Dominique L.

Agreed, Eve. Ralph Fiennes was hot in Red Dragon.

I don’t know what this says about me, but I thought Michael Pitt in Funny Games was attractive- terrifying but attractive, nonetheless.

  • Dtom

Cara, you beat me to the punch. I’m a sucker for heist movies, no matter who is in it.
Also, Cece, please don’t sully the Popwatch blog with that “First” crap…can’t stand it on the AV Club, don’t bring it here.

  • Ames

If money troubles are solved by either: 1) planning an elaborate scheme to rob someone or 2) clearing out a barn and putting on a show.

  • Anonymous

Michael Pitt scares the living daylights out of me in everything he’s in, even in Dawson’s Creek.

i am a sucker for films about the end of civilization but that doesnt mean i will go flock to the theater to see it. it just means eventually i will. I’m also big on dystopian / totalitarian societies in movies… those are always fun lol

  • Rich

I love dystopia movies. Any movie where the future is going to hell, I’m there.

  • Nina

I will watch anything having to do with underprivledged kids/ underdog sports teams making a comeback. ‘Lean on Me’ ‘Remember the Titans’ ‘Miracle’ ‘Glory Road’ all gems, the entire genre.

  • Elizabeth

Brendan Frasier in “George of the Jungle”

  • Catherine

Any dance movie, I will watch with passion, yes even those insipid one like Step up. I even watched Drumline because it was close enough…
And sport movie, where the underdog wins. All cliches but usually entertaining!!!

  • Aaron

I will see any movie revolving around political or corporate scandal, especially if Watergate is somehow involved. I’m not sure why exactly; I think it has something to do with a fantasy of being a hard-hitting investigative newspaper reporter. But yeah, I’ll see anything on the subject.

  • Catherine

For an actor, it was Timothy Olyphant in Go…so hot eventhough he is kind of a scumbag bordeline loser…

  • Eric Friedmann

Having grown up with a summer house in the Hamptons for the past 30 years, I enjoy most any film having to do with a person’s connection to their house and home, such as LIFE AS A HOUSE, UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN and THE LAKE HOUSE.

  • Chris

I’m addicted to movies about historical queens: “Marie Antoinette”, “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”, “The Other Boleyn Girl” — I was there on opening weekend, even if I had to go by myself and not tell anyone else about my secret movie guilty pleasure.

Zombie and heist movies, even the silly ones, are always fun.

  • DRS

I will watch any movie with horses in it. It doesn’t even have to be about horses. If there are horses featured anywhere, I will watch it and I will love it.

  • Anthony

Any and every movie about Tudor England.

  • Lena

I will see just about any movie if it has to do with the Civil War: “Sommersby,” “Cold Mountain,” “Gods & Generals,” “Gettysburg,” “Gone With the Wind.” It doesn’t matter, I own ‘em all.

  • Jakeem

Movies about impossible missions or commando raids are a hit with me, particularly “The Guns of Navarone,” “Where Eagles Dare” and “Jason and the Argonauts.” I also never get tired of the Rebel Alliance’s mission on the moon of Endor in “Return of the Jedi.”
What most of these movies have in common is the Nazis, who were without a doubt the greatest villains of the 20th Century. Which makes them the greatest of movie villains, too!

  • beentheredonethat

Scottish actors or films set in scotland, I’m there.
And I too was totally turned on by Ralph Fiennes in Shindlers as well. glad I am not alone.

  • ATL

spy movies. any and all spy movies. i even watched spy kids and found it entertaining.
