Someone has been leaking stories to the New York Times and other major papers about the likelihood that Katie Couric won’t be anchoring the CBS Evening News much longer; it could even be Couric herself, floating trial balloons to see what she might do next, either at CBS or elsewhere. In retrospect, perhaps CBS brass will finally acknowledge that the show wasn’t the best use of her Today-honed talents, or maybe they’ll decide that the nigthly network newscast (as an institution) is in such desperate straits that it will take more than just a marquee star like Couric to save it. But let’s not think of the sinking ship just now; instead, let’s ask where Couric should land.
Of the options she’s pondering in today’s Times story, the one I like best for her is taking over Larry King’s slot at CNN. It’s a show I think is particularly well suited to her talents (setting prominent interview subjects at ease, mingling with the heartland folks who’d call in). Unfortunately, she’ll have to crawl over King’s propped-up-like-El-Cid corpse to land the job. So maybe there are other options you think would serve her well; please share below.

Why does this always happen to me??!! LOL I LOVE the CBS Evening News. I have been watching it with Katie Couric since October and, to be quite honest, the evenings where she isn’t hosting it and that guy is doing it instead, I change the channel. Whenever I like something on TV, they cancel it. Now I can’t even count on them keeping the news anchor that I like? LOL Sigh
i think larry king’s job is a great idea for couric, though i agree he probably isn’t going anywhere for a long time. i’d love to see katie couric get some sort of XM/CNN/Internet show where she’s using all mediums to broadcast more feature stories. perhaps not the harder news, just more conversational. i’ve never heard of someone tackling a show in all three markets like that. i think it could be great…
I was going to say “retire!” but actually I like the idea of Larry King stepping down – and Couric taking his place. Make it so!
I hear Lady Foot Locker is hiring.
idk, why don’t they just keep her there, but pay her less? w/ anyone else they probably won’t get better ratings, and her insanely high salary coupled w/ lackluster ratings is what’s creating word of her departure. i like her, maybe she can go back to Today — i don’t care much for boring meredith. katie and matt had great chemistry.
She should retire to the Hamptons on her millions.
CNN doesn’t have to retire Larry for Katie to get her own show on CNN. Even if they did the exact same format, their personalities are so different, it’d be a brand new show. Or, how about a chat show? Go up against, Ellen or Regis? She likes to sing, so she could belt out a few tunes every week. My clueless opinion is that she should create her own newsotainment show. She’s already left two of the best gigs in network television. There isn’t much left for her to do except get creative.
Why do people like her? She’s annoying. The Today Show, which is crud, is less cruddy without her. CBS Evening News, which is also crud, is cruddier with her. I agree with the people who say she ought to retire and enjoy the rest of her life.
Never understood the love for Katie. I started watching the Today show after she left.
Larry King’s job would be perfect for Katie Couric–he’s a horrible interviewer and so is she!
She should just retire already. I never understood her appeal. CBS should’ve kept Schieffer.
Maybe she can join Kathy Lee Gifford in the fourth hour of today, also known as the “I realize I made a lot of mistakes, so please give me a second chance” hour.
It would be a good and smart move if CBS would farm out Maggie Rodriguez and then Katie have join the CBS Early Show. If they’re not going to bring back Paula Zahn to boost their ratings (she and Harry Smith make a good team), the least they can do is move Katie there.
KATIE COURIC LIVE at nine on CNN every night would bring this viewer back! She’s the perfect choice to replace Larry (BTW, would somebody please top up his embalming fluid…)She was great on the Today Show with both politicians and celebs. I’d really love to see her get this job. CNN – get her!
I don’t understand the musical chairs routine these broadcasters play. Some leave their affiliate at the top of their game and go somewhere else to be forgotten. Some are ousted for no apparent reason (Solidad O’Brien). Katie is OK but I’ll take Solidad any day.
