What should Katie Couric do next?

Katiecouric_lSomeone has been leaking stories to the New York Times and other major papers about the likelihood that Katie Couric won’t be anchoring the CBS Evening News much longer; it could even be Couric herself, floating trial balloons to see what she might do next, either at CBS or elsewhere. In retrospect, perhaps CBS brass will finally acknowledge that the show wasn’t the best use of her Today-honed talents, or maybe they’ll decide that the nigthly network newscast (as an institution) is in such desperate straits that it will take more than just a marquee star like Couric to save it. But let’s not think of the sinking ship just now; instead, let’s ask where Couric should land.

Of the options she’s pondering in today’s Times story, the one I like best for her is taking over Larry King’s slot at CNN. It’s a show I think is particularly well suited to her talents (setting prominent interview subjects at ease, mingling with the heartland folks who’d call in). Unfortunately, she’ll have to crawl over King’s propped-up-like-El-Cid corpse to land the job. So maybe there are other options you think would serve her well; please share below.

Why does this always happen to me??!! LOL I LOVE the CBS Evening News. I have been watching it with Katie Couric since October and, to be quite honest, the evenings where she isn’t hosting it and that guy is doing it instead, I change the channel. Whenever I like something on TV, they cancel it. Now I can’t even count on them keeping the news anchor that I like? LOL Sigh

i think larry king’s job is a great idea for couric, though i agree he probably isn’t going anywhere for a long time. i’d love to see katie couric get some sort of XM/CNN/Internet show where she’s using all mediums to broadcast more feature stories. perhaps not the harder news, just more conversational. i’ve never heard of someone tackling a show in all three markets like that. i think it could be great…

I was going to say “retire!” but actually I like the idea of Larry King stepping down – and Couric taking his place. Make it so!

  • Cody

I hear Lady Foot Locker is hiring.

  • nunya

idk, why don’t they just keep her there, but pay her less? w/ anyone else they probably won’t get better ratings, and her insanely high salary coupled w/ lackluster ratings is what’s creating word of her departure. i like her, maybe she can go back to Today — i don’t care much for boring meredith. katie and matt had great chemistry.

She should retire to the Hamptons on her millions.

CNN doesn’t have to retire Larry for Katie to get her own show on CNN. Even if they did the exact same format, their personalities are so different, it’d be a brand new show. Or, how about a chat show? Go up against, Ellen or Regis? She likes to sing, so she could belt out a few tunes every week. My clueless opinion is that she should create her own newsotainment show. She’s already left two of the best gigs in network television. There isn’t much left for her to do except get creative.

Why do people like her? She’s annoying. The Today Show, which is crud, is less cruddy without her. CBS Evening News, which is also crud, is cruddier with her. I agree with the people who say she ought to retire and enjoy the rest of her life.

  • Beth

Never understood the love for Katie. I started watching the Today show after she left.

  • Cat

Larry King’s job would be perfect for Katie Couric–he’s a horrible interviewer and so is she!

  • dma69

She should just retire already. I never understood her appeal. CBS should’ve kept Schieffer.

  • Jane

Maybe she can join Kathy Lee Gifford in the fourth hour of today, also known as the “I realize I made a lot of mistakes, so please give me a second chance” hour.

  • schrivey

It would be a good and smart move if CBS would farm out Maggie Rodriguez and then Katie have join the CBS Early Show. If they’re not going to bring back Paula Zahn to boost their ratings (she and Harry Smith make a good team), the least they can do is move Katie there.

  • TorontoTom

KATIE COURIC LIVE at nine on CNN every night would bring this viewer back! She’s the perfect choice to replace Larry (BTW, would somebody please top up his embalming fluid…)She was great on the Today Show with both politicians and celebs. I’d really love to see her get this job. CNN – get her!

I don’t understand the musical chairs routine these broadcasters play. Some leave their affiliate at the top of their game and go somewhere else to be forgotten. Some are ousted for no apparent reason (Solidad O’Brien). Katie is OK but I’ll take Solidad any day.

can’t stand Katie but loved Schieffer. if more ‘newscasters’ were like him i’d defintely watch. i loved Jennings and Brokaw and i really like Charlie on ABC. if they’re goin to throw a woman in there it needs to be a serious journalism person. someone i’ve yet to see anywhere on the major networks.

  • Jen

    Dancing with the Stars, obviously.

  • Tmerk

I always liked Katie, but the evening news seemed too serious for her. She has always been the silly, kind of fun loving interviewer. She can do a hard interview, but too many in a row seems like it could depress her. The few times I’ve checked out the news on CBS she looked out of place, and depressed. I’m sure she has plenty of money invested somewhere that could probably take care of many generations of her family. Why doesn’t she just travel with her children, and do what ever she wants? If she runs into something interesting to do, do it, then go on.

Pick up some pom poms and be a cheerleader for the Navy Seals, because we know she thinks they rock.

When I see journalists or newscasters make a guest appearance on TV sitcoms, I kinda feel like they lose credibility somehow. I can’t remember which one Couric appeared on, but I lost a bit of respect for her going Hollywood. Larry King gets away with it somehow, but that too is getting old. Just like him.

  • KatyDid

    Well, I think Katie should…
‘Pack up her troubles in her old kit bag and smile, smile, SMILE.
    Hardy har.

  • VivaViagra

Couric belongs at home watching her son’s soccer match. She is a two-bit broadcaster who is driving viewers away from CBS News. I’m one.

  • cedricgirl

that’s awesome since Couric doesn’t have a son. She has two daughters. Take some more viagra, dude.

  • mscisluv

I second Jen’s suggestion: Dancing with the Stars!

  • Joey Jo Jo

She needs to hang em up. She’s a tired diva who thought that being not so charming in the morning could easily transition her into a job where you need real journalistic chops. Anything she’d do after this would diminish whatever legacy she might have if she left the stage now.

  • Stephanie T.

Journalism professor at NYU, and Dancing with the Stars. :-)

Katie & CBS & the networks needs a new format. Whenever I pass a bar or am in the airport, CNN, FOX, and MSNBC are on…not the networks. Maybe the soaps and game shows, but by the news coming on at 6 p.m., most people aren’t even home from work. They have to consider that some people work two jobs, get home late, and they don’t have time to see news. They already know what the news is from the internet and work.

today show sucks w/o katie. meredith is rubbish & always has been. ann curry ain’t much better. stopped watching it when katie left. but cbs news has always been rubbish & she should NEVER have left the today show for cbs. cbs news might have been excellent w/ cronkite but w/ rather it went downhill & fast & that’s cuz cbs seems to enjoy shoving their left wing liberal thinking down the throats of their viewers instead of doing what any reputable journalist would do & that’s TELL THE NEWS w/ JUST THE FACTS. if cbs news wants to get better they should try & report instead of shove. it seems everyone @ cbs news HATES america & HATES the military & HATES all republicans. i’m a dem & even I can see that!! katie should do something akin to the today show even if it might be @ night on CNN.

  • GeeMoney

She should get a reality TV show…. duh! That’s what all of the big stars are doing now. :)

I find it funny that her “Today Personality” has overshadow anything she well ever do and it has become to a point were it has become a stereotype of her and that sad. She been doing a great job but people still see hear as Tmerk wrote in his comment. But it also the stereotype of what anchorman has to be and I do ponder if people may aren’t seeing the so call Gravitas that people come to expect when seeing the network news. Something has to chance but problem is will people like the change or outgrow to the point where CBS Evening News become the first to be canceled
