I love the one where Olivia is born, and Dolly Parton talks about the first day of the last decade of the entire twentieth century.
I also love the one where they have to buy a new van and Mary Jo goes looking for the ladies at the dealership and ends up negotiating the deal herself. She talks about the six-hundred dollar orange in Guadalajara. It’s hysterical.
But my favorite is the “The Rowdy Girls,” which chokes me up even to think about it.
My favorites were when the characters showed unexpected sides, such as Suzanne caring for Julia after Reese’s heart attack, or Bernice answering the sexist minister’s biblical quotes with contradicting(and relevant) passages. The characters had depth, not just one-liners, and they were actors, not stand-up comedians shoe-horned into a TV show.
I love this show but it seems it is considered too sentimental to be heavy weight comedy in the Friends/Cheers/Seinfield class – instead lumped with other comedies that it was far superior too. The last series before Suzanne and Charlene left was the best and it was a real shame it lost those actors when it was reaching its peak. From memory a very funny episode was the one when Suzanne shot Anthony while stealing the trival pursuit game from Julia’s house. Although it was quite a different show I always thought it predated Seinfield as the first comedy to have the characters have conversations about things that were not plot related (ie nothing). The conversations between the four about everythhing thing from odd stories in the paper to the antics of celebrities and politicians was all golden. I think it has never been given enough credit by critics for it cracking witty dialogue.
Loved this show and wish it was on DVD as well. To all of you who have asked, the reason it is not is due to the cost of the licsensing rights for all of the music used in the show. AS for favorite episodes, its hard to choose. Two of my favories are actually from later years. I love when Julia and Mary Jo get stuck under the news anchors bed while he has marathon sex. I also love BJ’s first episode and her bondage room…although she claims ” I dont think of it as mine…yet!”
Two favorites come to mind: the PETA episode when Suzanne breaks her arm and is forced to wear her fur coat for a week. “Fifty creatures died for that coat!” “Wanna make it 51?” The other is when Julia has jury duty and talks about her roommate’s “June Allyson bladder pants.”
I liked the one where Julia made a speech about how men get everything handed to them and treat women like chattel, Suzanne made an ignorant remark and the other two complained about their lives.
I enjoyed the episode where Anthony was injured and Suzanne was going to take care of him. She treated him like one of her doll babies and had him in the bed using him as her model for make up and he called Julia for help stating “She said she’s going to exfoliate me!” then threw himself out of the bed and down the steps to get away from her. HILARIOUS!!!
