'Alvin and the Chipmunks,' rodent kings of all media

Alvin_lOh, you thought you had it bad when those screeching animated vermin infested our nation’s movie theaters for a few weeks? Now Alvin and his cohorts are back, in a big way. Their soundtrack has been hanging around on Billboard’s album-sales chart for a while; this week, just when they’d started slowly dropping into oblivion, they scurried back up into the top five. This distressing rebound was, apparently, a side effect of their DVD hitting stores last week — ’cause, y’know, if you’re buying an atrocious movie you might as well buy its atrocious companion CD at the same time. The DVD, meanwhile, handily trounced Sweeney Todd to land atop that chart this week. Sweeney Todd, people! If these critters can beat back a homicidal singing barber that easily, how can we possibly stop them?

Look, I know kids dictate the big pop-cultural trends these days, but Iseriously fear for the future of our society if this inconceivablygrating cartoon is beating the competition in every possible form ofentertainment. It’s like when Jennifer Lopez had the number one movie and album in the country, only (somewhat) more annoying. You tell me — where will it all end?

you are speaking to a the same people who don’t question their government in times of war – that are oblivious to the current war – that don’t even go out and vote for gosh sakes!

I started working with kids and they are all OBSESSED with this movie. I don’t get it. It was THE hit in the classrooms. My boyfriend and I could barely make it through the seeing previews for the movie, The Game Plan, without gagging, and that is the other movie the kids love to death. Ugh.

Simon: It will end when this generation of kids (Generation Zzzzz?) grow up and find that there ARE funnier things in the world than screaming ALVIIIIN at the tops of their lungs in helium voices. I know I did, so there is hope…just a little hope.

Just further proof of the dumbing-down of America. I shudder to imagine the kind of insipid garbage Hollywood has waiting for us and our unsuspecting children. And let’s face it, kids don’t know any better.

I’ve been watching my 3-year old niece do the “bwau chicka wau wau” dance since she first saw the trailer on TV. (insert shutter here) Two points: 1) this will end when Hollywood stops remaking everything and comes up with an original idea; and 2) this will end when parents want to actually spend time with their kids instead of bowing to every request – because its easier to spend a little money and ship them off to something than to actually spend the time with the “little tax write offs”. Because, it cuts into their time being awesome parents…

I didn’t see the movie, but I have grown a bit tired of the commercials for the DVD. I have also wondered when the news reports about someone cooking their pet hamster in the dishwasher to ‘give it a bath’ will come out.

I always hated Alvin and the gang too, but you never know what kids will go for. And Simon, thought you were a Jennifer Lopez fan, now you’re dissing her? What up?

The movie was for teens not kids, and while it was cute yet poorly written. The Ba-chicka-wa-wa dance was just not necessary.
BTW: I swore that I saw that idea before with Alvin and the Chipmunks. I believe that it was an earlier episode of the Eighties version of the cartoon in which David must save his boys from his uncle who makes the Chipmunks into a stage/sideshow act and the uncle gets all of the profits. In fact, there was a scene in the cartoon in which the Chipmunks walk a tightrope and sing Michael Jackson’s “Got Me Workin’ Day and Night” from the album, “Off the Wall”.

The song is not called ba-chicka-wa-wa its called ‘”witch doctor” you dumbby and it is from the old alvin and the chipmunks show when the Chipmunks were babies. Also “christmas dont be late,” was an old song from the Alvin and the Chipmunks christmas movie. If you watched that christmas movie classic you would Know they where trying to save a boys life. But this is the stuff people want to see old classics, and kids now-a-days deserve to see it as, see these classics as well almost like a history lesson. Atleast its keeping kids minds from thinking of shooting, and killing, and murder, and suicide, and sex and other stuff that kids have no buisness doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought the movie was kind of fun and nostalgic, having watched the cartoon when i was a kid. You can’t knock a franchise that has been around for so long (50 years I think?)

I saw this movie with my 7-year-old daughter. I enjoyed it. I see LOTS of kids movies. There are good ones and bad ones. This one is pretty good. Simon – you are a curmudgeon!
