Annie Barrett and I brainstorm a set list for the eight remaining American Idol contestants, including numbers from En Vogue, Tom Petty, and Irene Cara. Think of this episode as Idolatry Gives Back, and after you’ve watched, get in the spirit and make some suggestions of your own. Otherwise, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself when someone sings "I Believe I Can Fly" or "Flying Without Wings."

I think it would be sacrilegious for anyone to do “No More Drama”, and if KLC busts out “Amazing Grace” for the THIRD TIME, she should literally get that hook from the Muppet Show to pull her off stage. I would love if one of the fellas (Michael or David Cook especially) would try “Go Rest High On That Mountain” by Vince Gill. I cry when I hear a lot of Vince’s songs, but I’m a blubbering mess 5 seconds into that song. We don’t need to revist “I’ll Stand By You” since Carrie sang the begeezus out of it last year. Seriously – lets retire some of these songs.
the thought of little david in an off-the-shoulder sweatshirt will get me through the day. and i’m with you on giving jason castro some songs that may bring the band in a bit more. might i suggest dave matthew’s band, “everyday?” that songs is pretty uplifting. and although i’d like to offer more suggestions here for other songs our idols should sing, i can’t think of a better choice than “free your mind” for ms. mercado. honestly, a brilliant suggestion. doubt she’ll take it though!
actually, after further consideration, i’d like to offer carly smithson the honor of singing “hold on” by wilson phillips, for the following reasons. 1) the song rocks. 2) i think carly could actually sing it really well. 3) that modulation towards the end of the song gives me chills. 5) it’s never been sung on idol before. 5) did i mention the song rocks?
was it just me or were there no suggestions for Brooke in there?
“Eye of the Tiger”- don’t care who sings it, I just want to hear it!
Poor Brooke. She’s invisible to them now!
I thought those were great suggestions and would be a way better show than we’ll get tonight. I SO don’t want to hear The Greatest Love of All by anyone. And if David A did it, how ironic would that be? Him being a child himself and all.
MICHAEL, that homeless woman knows a lot about music! Oh wait, that was ANnie Barrett – zing!
Truly, I would love to see Little David get his “Shop Around” groove back with my all-time fave inspirational song, Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher” – that hot chorus, with the backup singers, would just KILL! I’d love to see him do well this week, as it’s his “wheelhouse” (I said wheelhouse!) — and maybe if he does really well this week his dad won’t get out the wire hangers….
- It may seem sappy on the surface, but I would love to hear David Cook tackle Jon Secada’s “Just Another Day”
- Michael Johns would do an amazing job on the uplifting “Higher Love” from Steve Winwood
- Jason Castro could kill Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”
And I don’t really care what the women sing.
If David Cook wants to really create an Idol “moment” he should take on “Love Reign O’er Me” by the Who. He’s the only one who could hit those Roger Daltrey notes. I’m just sayin’…
david cook could pry take on u2….he has the voice…i’m kind of dreading tonight’s episode because i can’t stand to hear another message song from david a…and then hear him praised for a boring, over-the-top presentation that won’t hold up in the real world for five minutes…ten bucks he giggles and then tells us what “a great message” the song has…gag me…
This week is just going to suck, they are all going to pick sappy ballads and we’re all going to yearn for Lennon/McCartney week. Annie I love you, but what was up with that hat?
Mostly great suggestions, but I disagree with “No More Drama” for David Cook. Huh?!
David Cook = It’s My Life, Last Man Standing, Lost Highway, Everybody’s Broken, The Last Night, Raise Your Hands, or basically any other Bon Jovi anthem songs.
Brooke = “Love Can Build A Bridge.” As far as schlock goes, that’s a beautiful song and it’s right in her “wheelhouse” (whatever that means).
This one’s for Slezak: Carly should do “Holding Out For Hero” by Bonnie Tyler. Huh? Oh yeah, you’re lovin’ it.
Whatever happens, I desperately hope that no one chooses “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, because Randy will be insufferable.
Leave Annie alone! The hat’s cute, and it takes a lot of personality to pull off that hat look with such panache. Keep rockin’ it, Annie!
Thanks for obviously ignoring Brooke.
Gosh saying you’re now rooting for Kristy Lee and you don’t even mention Brooke.
Wow.
michael, can i pick a bone with you about your power rankings? you mention how jason needs to show more versatility in his song choices and performances. and this has been a comment by randy, but i don’t see any of the other contestants having any versatility and they don’t get slammed for it. david cook, who i also like, does the same thing every week. after “hello”(which was amazing) it’s all been very predictable. electric guitar, emo arrangement, him growling into the mike.i actually wouldn’t mind if he won, but i don’t think he’s shown any versatility. carly same thing, you just know how she is going to sound when she sings a song, boring to me. jason, definitely has his own style and i think it’s great. he has consistently picked songs that are different and you wouldn’t expect him to pick and makes them sound original. i agree that his vocals haven’t always been stellar but please stop saying he needs to be more versatile. i would buy his cd’s and david c. and michael johns.
Syesha should sing “Soar” by Christina Aguilera. I can’t get this idea out of my mind: David Archuleta singing “Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self” by Pink. Would fit him perfect with his “family” issues, and would entertain me to no end!
