According to early results of our homepage poll, 43 percent of you are worried that Project Runway will change if the show does, in fact, move to Lifetime this fall as planned. I have to say I’m surprised: Last night, at my friend Robb’s birthday party, people seemed far more concerned about The Golden Girls leaving Lifetime for Hallmark Channel in spring 2009. Apparently, a lot of people like to fall asleep to "The Girls," which Lifetime plays from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m.
How do you feel about that move? I’ve already had to learn what number Hallmark is on my dial (it was that Andrew McCarthy/Teri Polo movie Straight from the Heart that got me), so though I don’t like change, I can deal. I just hope Lifetime knows what it’s doing by focusing on original programming…

My left arm just went numb…
Two “Lifetime” posts in one day.
Like I said in the other Popwatch post, I’ll watch “Project Runway” no matter where it goes, but I’d prefer for it to stay on Bravo. I can only hope this news of a move to Lifetime was just a way to get people talking about the Lifetime channel, which doesn’t happen to often, but has already happened multiple times since the proposed “PR” move.
As for, what do I fall asleep to? I WOULD go with Leno, but he’s actually so aggressively unfunny that it keeps me awake, so I usually ended putting on the sleep timer and falling asleep to Sportscenter highlights I’ve already seen.
I was also at Robb’s birthday last night and let me echo the level of concern about this switch. Hallmark? As Sophia would say, “Picture it, Sicily… 1931. A young peasant girl in her prime curls up for bed with a scoop of spumoni, fresh bisotti, and the familiar sounds of Mussolini on her radio. But wait, where is Mussolini??! A programming switch? She’s forced to settle on Mama Celeste’s new radio reality show and calls it a night — and a new sleepy time ritual.”
Noooooooo! I have fond memories of college a couple years ago, watching “Designing Women” and “Golden Girls” and “The Nanny” with my roommates in the evenings.
OK, at first I was upset about this, because I, too, watch the 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. G-squared block practically every night. But then I read on, and found out that Hallmark also acquired the rights to air The Parent Trap, which I wholeheartedly support. Every time I see that it’s on I’m always disappointed to find the crappy Lohan remake instead of the original.
What do I fall asleep to? If it’s a weekend, Da Vinci’s Inquest. It’s a boring Canadian crime drama.
I think this move is actually pretty smart, as Hallmark channel is the preferred channel at pretty much every nursing home in the US. I know that my grandma was very sad that her cable at the nursing home didn’t include Lifetime (but did have Lifetime Movie Network).
As desolate as prime time has been, late night is easily the highlight of my viewing day. Stewart, Colbert, Letterman, and Ferguson keep me laughing til bedtime.
It’s so much that I fall asleep to GG, I wake up to them every morning. 8am-9am while getting ready for work. I’m worried b/c I just don’t think ‘The Nanny’ or ‘Frasier’ are going to cut it that early in the morning.
Isn’t the Hallmark channel supposed to be like all mushy gushy G-rated programming? Because I feel like our four gray foxes are a little too risque for Hallmark. These women love to talk about men while eating cheesecake. Are they going to put them on between 7th Heaven and Little House on the Prairie? LAME! I would rather watch GG on Lifetime and then following that watch “Mother May I Sleep with Danger” or “Coed Call Girl”.
Speaking of Lifetime can EW please make a list of the top 20/25 original Lifetime movies ever? That would really rock my socks off. Because I really don’t care to look through a gallery of Pam Anderson’s top 12 roles, but seeing some Kellie Martin and Tori Spelling in “A Friend to Die For” would really be awesome.
It’s bad enough that they took the Golden Girls off at 6:00 in the evenings. I used to love to come home from work, eat dinner and watch the show. Now they are going to move it to another station altogether? Why?!
Better yet! EW writers, can you list (if possible) a top twenty-five list of the Lifetime films that have had actors that had cameo apperances or had full roles on an Aaron Speling dramas during the 80’s and 90’s. For Example, William R. Moses,Jamie Luner, etc.
OMG, I was so excited to read that I am not the only one to fall asleep to the G’ Girls! I purposely change it to that channel knowing I am going to fall asleep. It’s funny enough to keep me interested when I’m awake and non-threatening so when the dialogue shows up in my dreams it’s not freaking me out.
Oh no!!!!!!!!! I have it on every single night when I am going to bed and every morning when I am getting ready for work. I cannot believe this is happening…what if they move it from the ideal time slots?!
Does the target audience for “The Golden Girls” really fall asleep between 1 and 2 a.m.?
Too funny…it is like you guys are inside my DVR!!
agree — I LOVE Frasier — but never felt comfortable watching it in the morning
This is not cool…GG is always there when I’m up that late and bored, but I don’t get Hallmark on my TV.
Normally, this wouldn’t have affected me too much since I have a Tivo. But my cable company got rid of Hallmark this past fall (along with GSN, and AMC the year before that), so, no more GG for me. =’-( Comcast sucks!
BrandonK, the target audience of “Golden Girls” has been, for the past decade or so, fifteen- to thirty-something young women. Cf. Season 1 of “The OC” — Summer: “Omigod I’m Blanche!” Anna: “OMG you’re Blanche? I’m Rose!” “Aww! “Aww!”
Actually I’m not sure if GG was *ever* targeted towards the demographic it portrayed. It was much too sexually and socially frank, I think.
I’ll hold off my panic until I see how often Hallmark runs GG. I frankly would be fine with a GG cable channel, so I knew the girls would always be there when I needed them.
Oh, wow. I am a couple of days late, but I am glad I read this so I will know to check the Hallmark channel for GG if it goes off Lifetime. I am also excited to learn that so many other people watch it morning and night (and were sad to see the early-evening time slot go)! I may have withdrawals without my “Girls”.
It’s so funny that so many people fall asleep to the Golden Girls at 1 – 2 a.m. I do that, and I thought I was the only one! Then I usually wake up a few hours later to some crazy infomercial and shut off the TV. Maybe someone should do a poll to see how many of us fall asleep with the Golden Girls every weeknight.
My GG was like the Nick at nite for me, will not be paying too much attetion to Lifetime in the future.
A GG and Designing women, anoung other simular shows running 24/7, no stupid info crap. THE NEW NICK AT NITE, since that’s been ruined.
I have read that a lot of people fall asleep to golden girls.. Well I am almost the opposite, If i go to bed early I set my alarm to wake me up when it comes on. If GG’s is taken off lifetime they will loose a lot of important viewers….
hallmark? HALLMARK? is that a joke? Who gets hallmark anyway, cause its sure not on basic cable. I need mah gurls! Lifetime don’t do this to me. But i guess it’s out of your hands now….fools. Now lifetime is worth nothing. Once the phase-out began I knew it wasn’t going to be too long before my girls were gone for good–At least from my hallmark-less tv.
X 1000000000000.
This is so sad to me. The GG are like “comfort tv” for me. It’s the one show that I can always depend on to make me smile when I’m feeling really low. They’re such a part of my morning routine, and have been for so long, it’s going to be really strange not hearing St. Olaf stories while I’m getting ready to face the day. There’s really no point in watching Lifetime anymore. I mean, does anybody actually watch “Rita Rocks” and “Wife Swap”? I guess this means it’s finally time to buy all of the box sets, isn’t it?
Shame on Lifetime!!!!If it wasn’t for Frasier and How I Met Your Mother, I would never see Lifetime again. I had a feeling that something was changing when new shows were added to the lineup. Golden Girls has been a staple on Lifetime since 1997. I grew up watching this show and love every episode. Wife Swap STINKS!!! I can’t get into Rita Rocks. Nicole Sullivan was funnier on MAD TV and The King of Queens. Does Lifetime actually think that Blush is a better choice for the network?? I only knew about the show through E! on The Soup when they made fun of it. This is the same network that took away The Nanny and Designing Women. Why not also take away Still Standing? That show is AWFUL!! At least there is a light at the end of the tunnel with Hallmark Channel. I just have to remember to make the switch in March. First TV Land loses I Love Lucy and now this. Hallmark Channel will not disappoint me by adding these classics to its lineup. Thank you Hallmark for being our friend!
