My encounter with Charlton Heston

I met Charlton Heston only once, in 1996, but that brief interview cemented for me an admiring fondness for an actor whose politics I disagreed Read the full post.

Excellent call on the Hercules into! Charlton Heston was the right actor for the bibilical, epic roles he performed. He wasn’t acting like a man – he was acting as an icon. His politics sucked, in my opinion, but opinions aren’t law when given informally – he may have been a giant tight-ass (see Roger Moore’s interview with him) but so what? I’ll be happy forever knowing that “Soylent Green is People!!!!”

Wow Douglas, you sound like a really well-balanced, rational person, unlike those “evil Republicans.” Good riddance indeed. He was a man who fought for our constitutional rights, in more ways than one.
I, for one, loved his movies. He was always fun to watch.

Rest in peace, Charlton. I loved Touch of Evil and Planet of the Apes. Although The Ten Commandments bored the living s**t out of me.

My Charlton Heston memmory is a personal one too. My mother had to fly to Montana because her mother was very ill. This was back around 1991. After spending a week with my grandmother, my mom flew to LA before she got on her flight home to Hawaii. Anyway, my mom called home to tell us where she was and we had to inform her that her mother had died in the past hour. My mom recalls that the momment she was told about her death, she looked to her right and there was Charleston Heston standing next to her at the payphones. I asked her if she was okay and she said she would be fine since Moses was there besides her. I hae alwasy been grateful for the comfort that his famous role gave her.

Really well balanced and well written piece. Great work.

Nice tribute, Gary. I too did not particularly like Heston’s politics, but he wouldn’t be the first to jump from left to right wing beliefs. I watched Touch of Evil last night as my tribute to him. On the subject of Michael Moore and Heston’s last film appearance, I do have to say this. The only one who came across as despicable in that interview was Moore himself. As I said, I may not share Heston’s political views, but for someone as toadish as Moore to sandbag a man clearly suffering from an incurable memory disease was disgusting. Heston had the good manners to ‘unplug’ and calmly walk out of the room. He had more class in his toenail than Moore will ever have during his entire life. RIP, Mr. Heston. And thank you for all the years of entertainment (I added it up. I’ve seen 25 Chuck movies over the years).

Heston should not be remembered for his political views, but for his acting. Only he could utter that immortal phrase: “Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!”

Douglas, rejoicing in someone’s death because of a difference in political views is the height of intolerance. I know the internet affords people anonymity to say whatever they want without accountability, but there’s really no excuse for being so malicious, esp. towards someone you don’t even personally know.
It’s always sad when another screen legend leaves us. I remember watching Ben-Hur for the first time on VHS as a little girl – it was probably the first epic I’d ever seen – and being enthralled by that chariot race.

Gabby, right on! And Dougie dear, you need to take a look in the mirror and tell yourself to lighten up and stop being so mean spirited. Hatred is bad for the soul man1

A giant of Hollywood is gone.
Not many left now. Peter O’Toole, Michael Caine, maybe a couple others.
And Douglas, you are the perfect example of the Liberal hypocrit.
Libs like to say they are tolerant and they are ONLY tolerant to those that agree with them.

God forbid someone enjoy target shooting and have other than liberal views. Get a life!
