How did US radio miss out on S Club 7's 'Don't Stop Movin'?

My British friends Sam and Cat came to New York for a visit earlier this month, and since I forced them to sit through an American Idol results show featuring a soul-crushing Beatles medley, they decided to trot out one of their own guilty pleasures, S Club 7’s "Don’t Stop Movin’," a "Billie Jean"-sampling dancefloor soufflé that was big across the pond back in 2001 but never made any impact at US radio. To which I say, "guilty-schmilty!" Clearly, this deep-fried musical treat is destined for a spot on my iPod, perhaps on a trashy cardio playlist alongside Fergie’s "Fergalicious," Billie Piper’s "Because We Want To," and Mya’s "Free." See, people, junk food can be good for you!

Amen. This song was fantastic. And anything by Billie Piper is welcome on my workout mix.

S Club 7 rocked my world in the early 2000s… you’d love them, Slezak. I don’t feel guilty at all… You should also check out Girls Aloud — the most successful reality show contestants of all time according to Guinness.

I am definitely not ashamed to have many, many songs by S Club in constant rotation on my iPod. If you like this, you need to go to iTunes and IMMEDIATELY download Rachel Stevens’s deliciously brilliant album Come And Get It. Each track is pure pop perfection. And yet, somehow, it flopped spectacularly in the UK. Let’s face it, the Brits just know how to do cheesy dance-pop about a million times better than Americans.
Also check out: Girls Aloud’s Chemistry, Dannii Minogue’s Neon Nights, and anything by the Sugababes. Oh, and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nsZ_TAMu8g

I loved S Club 7 – this brings back lots of good memories. the brits know how to do good cheesy pop.

This was always my favorite S Club song. It’s got a kick-ass beat. It is also on my cardio list on my iPod. My roommates and I used to love to sing S Club in the car when I was in my second year of University, and we were always watching the show on MuchMusic.

Defintely check out Girls Aloud! They’re a huge guilty pleasure: “Can’t Speak French”, “Call the Shots”, “Biology”, and “Sound of the Underground” are some great pop songs!

S Club Seven had there own show on ABC Family, back then know as Fox Family and were all the rage pre 9/11 but time moves on with american taste so fical…you could see how people forgot

Because at that time there were far too many teen-pop bands to keep track of.

i was living in belgium during those sclub 7 year and remember VIVDELY their wild popularity….
i think they had a new number 1 every month!
bar none, best line in the song
‘don’t stop movin to the s club beat’
    hilarious

I agree with those suggesting Girls Aloud. Their songs are really upbeat and just fun! I wish there was more camp music on US Radio but that’s why I listen to BBC Radio 1 instead.

I know how uncool this sounds, but Don’t Stop Movin’ is still a pretty popular Jazzercise routine.

I feel like whenever I write on these boards it is to embarrass myself.
    1. S Club 7 had three TV shows. One co-starred Linda Blair and another Barry Williams.
    2. I remember watching the premiere of this video on ABC Family.
    3. I feel like we probably missed out on a lot of S Club 7 songs–their only US hit was the annoying ballad “Never Had a Dream Come True.” But what about this song, and others like “Natural”? Awesome songs, seriously.
    4. They later lost a member (Paul, whose grandfather worked on Abbey Road, I believe I remember) and just became S Club. It’s the truth.
    5. I have no life.

Oh I looooooved S Club 7. I watched their show on Fox Family and developed a huge crush on Paul, because I thought he looked like Ewan McGregor. I have one of their albums- maybe their 1st one?- and I definitely need to add it to my iPod. Now, let’s see if I can name the members… Jo, Bradley, Rachel, Tina, Paul… and another guy? The wispy blonde one? What was his name? John? And then the cute blonde girl that looked like a baby Baby Spice.

In highschool, I used to watch S Club 7 on Fox Family everyday after school. I have most of their songs on my mp3, but there was one song Hannah sang called Here Kitty Kitty that I’ve always wanted. Don’t Stop Moving and So Alive were my favs.

  • mscisluv

Woo, loved S Club 7’s tv show a while back!

  • Sadie

Glad to know that my friends and I weren’t the only ones sucked into the S Club 7 tv show marathons years back.

  • alexandra

ha ha, i love S Club 7. i first heard them in england and then watched that show with my roommate after she got back from a semester in australia. and when i traveled to australia in 2002, i heard that song EVERYWHERE. along with kylie of course. god, i haven’t thought of this song in years – thanks for the flashback. i’m going to have to dig out that mix CD i made with this song.

  • Vicky

I thought I’d check Girls Aloud out. I’ve now been listening to “Can’t Speak French” for about an hour now. So catchy.

  • Derek

    I used to love S Club 7!
Check out Rachel Stevens’ album Come And Get It – it’s amazing!! Every song is a hit!

  • Jk

It never made it to FM radio, but I remember around 2002 it was well played on Radio Disney. I think there was only six members at that point. “Bring It All Back” was the best S Club 7 song, though.
Anyways, I grew up listening to that kind of stuff and I still love it.

  • ChrisChicago

I’ve been an S Club 7 fan for YEARS…starting with the show on Fox Family. Natural was and still is my favorite S Club song…oh, and I completely agree with everyone about how great Rachel Steven is – the complete Funky Dory album is in constant rotation on my Creative Zen!

  • Ron

Let me throw another one out there for you…a few years ago, while vacationing in Amsterdam, we kept hearing Push the Button by (the?) Sugarbabes. I thought that would be a huge hit here too. Guess not.

  • Ben

The Sugababes rock, but they’ve only released one song here… “Hole in the Head.” It topped the dance charts but only cracked the Hot 100… sad cause they rock. But US pop radio has to be hip hop to get play…

  • Maggs

Ive always wondered why British bands/artists never make it across the pond. My ipod is full of Westlife, Ronan Keating, Robbie Williams, McFly,S Club, The Pipettes..I can go on and on. I’d much rather listen to good uber cheesiness than the crap they play here. The song on constant rotation on my ipod is The Pipettes- Pull Shapes.

  • dma69

Whatever happened to pop music that’s actually good instead of nauseating? I’ll take anything by Robbie Williams, Pet Shop Boys, Erasuse, and the Scissor Sisters over the “pop/rock” garbage that Disney puts out.
Apologies to those Miley/Jonas fans, but I call it like I see and hear it.

  • Sarah

Question, favorite cheezy tv show? S Club 7, Breaker High or 2gether? I wish MTV would put seasons 1 and 2 of 2gether on DVD. So funny. U + Me = Us!

    Crap. You got me.

  • EM in MS

We used to dance to this song in our Jazzercise class. It was one of the favorite routines at the time. Catchy beat and cute moves! hahahahahaha!!!

A couple of things to add: I totally loved the ABC Family show, but they lost me when they went to Spain… and the show made me totally wish that I could carry off just wearing a sports bra with pants. Which I’m very glad to say that I never tried.
