Madonna got on the map because of her sex appeal, not necessarily her talent. Yeah she can sing, but her vocal is nothing to freak out about. Madonna sold sex first, music second. She’s only a legend to those who love her.

I’m not a ‘hater’ and she doesn’t ‘bother’ me. I just don’t see what the big deal is about her. If you take away the sexual element to her (mostly her 80′s image and that stupid Truth or Dare video) you’d have just a run of the mill singer. Her popularity was based mostly on the image she portrayed and the controversy she loved. Back then she said she wanted to ‘take over the world’ and musically she did for a bit, but without the sex, she’d would have faded fast. A sad commentary on this business. She’s a true style over substance story.

Madonna’s sexual antics ran out in, lets say, 1992. But since then, she has had numerous hits. Her sex appeal maybe put her on the map, but how did she stay on the map?

Madonna did put out a sexy image to help her get noticed, but how do you explain all of the radio airplay and millions of albums sold? Any artist can make a sexy video to get attention but that does not mean I will buy the album or request the song on radio. A more appropriate example of someone using sex as an image to get noticed is Paris Hilton, and look what happened when she put her album out. Even today, I still hear Madonna songs from the 80s on the radio which would suggest that there is more substance to her music than she is given credit for.

Madonna was always in control of her sexual imagery and how she used it – it was only under her control and there was a message in all of it: women’s (and men’s) sexual empowerment. That women could be sexy, talented, succeed & fail, be mothers and still rock stars. I think the stats ARE important because it means the music touched people in a way – which I believe is its true success. Madonna has never said she was a great singer – but she has written some great songs over the years, that thank you JJ, are still played ad nauseum today. And let’s not forget her influence on the many women that followed. Try to find the Rolling Stone issue of Women in Rock with Madonna on the cover with Tina Turner and Courtney Love – read about her influence on a slew of artists inside. No one disagrees that her music is only a part of the whole picture – its a “you can have it all” attitude & perserverance that people love. Not to mention her live shows! Has anyone been to one? cont…

I paid $450.00 in 2000 to see her live, and she only sang 2 vintage Madonna songs… I don’t really care as much for her new stuff, although I do have all the cds. I just think people would pay more attention to her new stuff if she kept giving us a taste of why we love her in the first place. She really has lost site of that. She doesnt’ realize that she hasn’t gained any new fans in at least 15 years, we are all just left overs from her glory days. Little girls listen to Miley Cirus, not Madonna even if she has Justin on her new track. Don’t forget Madonna, we are the ones that sent you to the top with our love, don’t insult us by making the songs we love seem lame.

wow- who knew a stupid joke can go this far? next thing you hear “madonna demands $30 million to sing old hits or she blows up malawi with a kabbalah bomb!”

  • paige

i for one dont really care to hear those songs- to be honest with you, how many different versions of Holiday can she pull out of her hat every tour? believe me, it wasnt missed on the last tour. i cant say i blame her- her library of music is so huge that she doesnt need to sing those songs anymore- i’m not saying to not sing any song pre-90′s- im just saying theres nothing wrong with variety– and you know what, she said years ago that she was never gonna do like a virgin and she did it in the last tour- i mean come on, shes a hypocrite- you should all know that by now.

  • paige

and no i wouldnt pay $30 mil– but i would like to have her do a specific setlist just for me– for free!!!!!

  • To dave

    $450. You must be insane.
