Price put on priceless Madonna songs

Categories: Madonna, Music

Madonna_lGonna have a celebration? All across the nation? Not gonna happen — unless you’re willing to fork over a truckload of money to the original Material Girl. In an interview that aired Friday on New York’s Z100-FM, to promote the release of her forthcoming album, Hard Candy (due April 29), Madonna hinted that fans may have heard "Like A Virgin," live for the very last time.

”I’m not sure I can sing ‘Holiday’ or ‘Like A Virgin’ ever again,” said the singer, who then quickly amended her statement upon recognizing the opportunity to advance from ridiculously rich to absurdly wealthy. ”I just can’t — unless someone paid me like $30 million or something.” Well gosh, I guess I can just go ahead and cancel this gazillion dollar check, then. Who knew Madonna came so cheap? This holiday’s more affordable than the Budget Inn.

(Here’s a photo of Madonna at 1985’s Live Aid concert, where she sang "Holiday," presumably for free, along with "Into the Groove.")

How much would you pay to hear Madonna’s classics live? Did you know you could have Tara Reid, Michael Bolton, Nick Lachey, AND Mariah Carey to come to your birthday party, all for less than 3.5 million dollars?! And hey, I bet for an extra 20 bucks you could convince Tara to sing "Like A Virgin."

wouldn’t pay a dime…..she’ll be 50 this year, right? latest photos of her bear an uncanny resemblance to Jessica Lange…..browlift anyone?

  • Snarf

Brilliant move – but till she gets what ABBA was offered to perform, 100 million, she dosen’t get bragging rights.
Tara Ried??? To do what? Show up cracked with her Franken-boobs spilling out of her dress? Yuck.

i wouldn’t listen to madonna “sing” for free. she truly is delusional.

  • alberto

The woman was KIDDING people, kidding!
Must be a slow news week to make a thread on something so stupid.

  • Jane

Thank you for using the 80’s photo of Madonna because nowadays she makes old look old. And how much would I pay to see her sing an old hit live. Nothing. The recordings are just fine and I never want to see that weird writing she did in the “Hung Up” video. We get it, you have a great body, but you’ve got an old face.

Poor Madonna! She can’t sing the songs that made her what she is today. She needs to think about the fact that without Holiday and Like a Virgin, she would be some no name living in Michigan whining about how she never made it big.

  • Carlo

    PRICELESS!
You are all nuts! Madonna is the most successful female entertainer in history, TRUST. At this point, if you aren’t a fan, you probably never will be. It’s mainly because you don’t “get it” in a way that fans do – this is what separates fans from non-fans. Recently being inducted in to the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, she has solidified her legend status, not that she has anything to prove. At the very least everyone should be inspired by everything she has been able to accomplish in her life instead of taking the negative route. Regardless, the statistics speak for themselves – look ‘em up. A performance by our last living true live entertainer and legend you ask? Priceless.

    Two words….head case.

  • aron

I would pay alot more than 30 million..i mean she’s THE living legend/icon…she can ask and we all have to bow to her….
Also, she was joking….i mean do americans have no sense of irony or humour???? so sad!! no wonder she lives in london and married a Brit!

  • KateDFW

I wouldn’t pay more than the price of a concert ticket to see Madonna. But as for all those other people you mentioned….I think you would have to pay me the 30 million to be in a room with all those “superstars”.

  • to carlo

don’t buy your argument. i happen to like artists with discernable talent and those who don’t essentially prostitute themselves to rise to fame and then try to act like a pretentious, prim English woman, like Madonna has.

  • jay

I agree with “to carlo.” Why does everybody HAVE to be inspired by Madonna just because she’s been around for so long? She sold herself as a sex symbol for most of her life, and she was great at it, but why does that constitute an amazing achievement for a supposedly amazing talent? I don’t get it, and I certainly do not HAVE to respect her.

  • jay

Carlo, the statistics show that Madonna is a great businesswoman, but not necessarily a great artist. Why is it that when everyone tries to convince me that Madonna is GREAT, they point to the stats? Sales don’t equal great musical or artistic talent.

  • MyOpinion

Madonna got on the map because of her sex appeal, not necessarily her talent. Yeah she can sing, but her vocal is nothing to freak out about. Madonna sold sex first, music second. She’s only a legend to those who love her.

  • chichi

    Madonna what? who?
    Ya’ll GOTTA see this!!!!!!!!

Funny how this haters come to read this section and spend time posting their comments. Why is she bothering you guys so much?

  • to ToEveryone

do u understand how the internet works? ppl can write what they want when they want, especially if it expresses dissent. get off your high horse.

  • MyOpinion

I’m not a ‘hater’ and she doesn’t ‘bother’ me. I just don’t see what the big deal is about her. If you take away the sexual element to her (mostly her 80’s image and that stupid Truth or Dare video) you’d have just a run of the mill singer. Her popularity was based mostly on the image she portrayed and the controversy she loved. Back then she said she wanted to ‘take over the world’ and musically she did for a bit, but without the sex, she’d would have faded fast. A sad commentary on this business. She’s a true style over substance story.

  • thiskid

Madonna’s sexual antics ran out in, lets say, 1992. But since then, she has had numerous hits. Her sex appeal maybe put her on the map, but how did she stay on the map?

  • JJ

Madonna did put out a sexy image to help her get noticed, but how do you explain all of the radio airplay and millions of albums sold? Any artist can make a sexy video to get attention but that does not mean I will buy the album or request the song on radio. A more appropriate example of someone using sex as an image to get noticed is Paris Hilton, and look what happened when she put her album out. Even today, I still hear Madonna songs from the 80s on the radio which would suggest that there is more substance to her music than she is given credit for.

  • Carlo

Madonna was always in control of her sexual imagery and how she used it – it was only under her control and there was a message in all of it: women’s (and men’s) sexual empowerment. That women could be sexy, talented, succeed & fail, be mothers and still rock stars. I think the stats ARE important because it means the music touched people in a way – which I believe is its true success. Madonna has never said she was a great singer – but she has written some great songs over the years, that thank you JJ, are still played ad nauseum today. And let’s not forget her influence on the many women that followed. Try to find the Rolling Stone issue of Women in Rock with Madonna on the cover with Tina Turner and Courtney Love – read about her influence on a slew of artists inside. No one disagrees that her music is only a part of the whole picture – its a “you can have it all” attitude & perserverance that people love. Not to mention her live shows! Has anyone been to one? cont…

I paid $450.00 in 2000 to see her live, and she only sang 2 vintage Madonna songs… I don’t really care as much for her new stuff, although I do have all the cds. I just think people would pay more attention to her new stuff if she kept giving us a taste of why we love her in the first place. She really has lost site of that. She doesnt’ realize that she hasn’t gained any new fans in at least 15 years, we are all just left overs from her glory days. Little girls listen to Miley Cirus, not Madonna even if she has Justin on her new track. Don’t forget Madonna, we are the ones that sent you to the top with our love, don’t insult us by making the songs we love seem lame.

  • paige

wow- who knew a stupid joke can go this far? next thing you hear “madonna demands $30 million to sing old hits or she blows up malawi with a kabbalah bomb!”

  • paige

i for one dont really care to hear those songs- to be honest with you, how many different versions of Holiday can she pull out of her hat every tour? believe me, it wasnt missed on the last tour. i cant say i blame her- her library of music is so huge that she doesnt need to sing those songs anymore- i’m not saying to not sing any song pre-90’s- im just saying theres nothing wrong with variety– and you know what, she said years ago that she was never gonna do like a virgin and she did it in the last tour- i mean come on, shes a hypocrite- you should all know that by now.

  • paige

and no i wouldnt pay $30 mil– but i would like to have her do a specific setlist just for me– for free!!!!!

  • To dave

    $450. You must be insane.
