The size 6 becoming a size 4 isn't what bothers me about this travesty. Sweet Valley High is classic and timeless. Most fans of SVH are still young enough to occasionally go back and appreciate these gems that got us through our childhood. It disgusts me that Random House feels the need to "update" these classic treasures. Even in the later SVU, when computers and texting were on the rise, these realities were blissfully ignored, which in my opinion, added to the charm of these books. Sweet Valley is an escape from everything real-the fantasy like, timeless aspect is what I love about them. The TV show was enough of an "update", when Jessica and Elizabeth were forced to be dated in the 90's. I still have all of my originals, and when my daughter is old enough to read them, she will be getting the classics, not the Gossip Girl-esque books about IM's and a Mexican Restaurant (Getting rid of the Dairi Burger? Seriously? Come ON Francine.)
What's next? Jane Eyre with a MacBook?

While I'm very adverse to directly or indirectly associating "perfection" with a certain dress size, I want to make a point that what was 1980's size 6 is different from 2008's size 4.
There is a thing called "Vanity sizing" - the kind of sizing the fashion industry uses to pad a woman's self esteem. The smaller the size, the better they feel. Sad how a woman's self esteem nowadays is dictated by the size of dress she wears. And not to mention, the closer to 0 you are the more "acceptable" you are. Also, a size 4 in one brand is different from a size 4 in another. Each have different fit models therefore each have differences in proportion.
Personally, I was never affected by the "perfect size 6" comment, but I can see how this would subconsciously affect young girls. There are other ways to describe the appearance of a person. Maybe the (re)writers should be more mindful of their target audience and the issues apparent today.

Well, I recall reading these books starting in the 5th grade and up through 7th (I think). For whatever reason, I didn't internalize "perfect size 6" as meaning that they were perfect BECAUSE they wore a 6 but rather that they perfectly fit into that size. However, the fact that people are sitting here messaging about it is proof that that were right in making the change. People are paying attention, aren't they? Without something like this for the masses to discuss only librarians would be talking about the reissue of a 20 year-old book series!

I think the Daniels twins were so much better for the part than this new girl. I really don't think changing the size the twins wear is such a big deal. I grew up with these books and it didn't make me want to be a perfect size 6.

Wow. It's 2008, and women have to be a size 4 to be considered pretty, unlike in the 1960's, a 14 was acceptable. So, in about 10 years or so, what size is going to be considered acceptable then? A size -6?
Basically, instead of sending models down the runway, in the future, designers will just send hangers. And women pretty much won't exist - we will all die off trying to attain that elusive size -6. Whoo hoo!
And I thought the economic crisis in this country was bad...

I would love to know why the publisher changed it at all -- it seems so random. I agree that they could just describe the girls as "healthy and pretty". Why do we need an exact size? This whole thing makes me sick, especially when I think of my young nieces, growing up in this extreme culture where every little part of someone's appearance is picked apart.
