What 'birthday year' hits should the Idols sing this week?

Filed under: American Idol and tagged: ,

On this week’s Idolatry (broken up into four, bite-size chunks), Kristen Baldwin and I offer song suggestions for Carly Smithson and David Archuleta — and after the jump, advice for Chikezie and Michael Johns. Check out our picks — yes, we do push for a Paula Abdul track! — then head to the comments section and give advice to your favorite contestants for "Songs from the Year You Were Born" Week on American Idol.

Who knew all the EW writers were such great comedians. First Dalton Ross with his dramatic readings and now Kristen Bladwin – singing to the binky – too funny!

Kristin is pretty easy on the eyes too. It must be a requirement for female guests on Idolatry.

Mmmm . . . Patti Smith added on to a season that already introduced people to Leonard Cohen (OK, to Jeff Buckley – but still)? That would be AWESOME. And MJ would pwn that song.

Michael, Michael, Michael, okay, you’re heading to the station thinking about getting on board the Chikezie train…but then you recommend songs by WOMEN! Why GIVE Simon more ammunition? Ahh, Chikezie.

I’m becoming a regular Idolatry watcher. Great. We are the Night for Michael and Would I lie to you is great for Chikezie. Those two were great, great picks. I completely disagree with all the songs for Archuleta though. Another ballad–NO. And Opposites Attract is great to see again but horrible for David. It’s got virtually no melody–it’s a song for a singer who doesn’t sing well . . . like Paula. I like “I go to Extremes” by Billy Joel. It’s a little pop-ish but it’s better than what you suggested.

I’m just throwing out songs for Carly, because of the four people you covered, she’s the one I’m pulling for. Also, she was only born two years after me, which doesn’t make me feel as old as say, David Archuleta. So I’m going to offer “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” and “Gloria” as options for her. The Eurythmics and Laura Branigan. I think good models for Carly. And if she’s feeling spunky, throw down a little “Africa” by Toto. Mainly because that’s one of the best songs of all time.

1978 was a great year for music. Michael will have his choice of Police, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, and Cars songs. Ooh! He should sing “Can’t Stand Losing You”!

Hey, Slezak, you always make such a big deal about Chikezie dropping his last name, but you can’t even spell his first name right! Come on, man!

After catching up on the Idolatries, I am crushing a little with EW’s Kristen Baldwin – she’s got a Jamie Lee Curtis face and vibe, pretty and b*tchy and a little evil. *Sigh*

No suggestions, I just can’t wait for tonight’s show! Reading through the power rankings, I want to see David Cook and Michael Johns bring it their a game!
Who thinks Kristee Lee is going to make the bottom three again tomorrow?

  • Snarf

I’d suggest, but then my true age would be known. Not a pretty picture.

I love Idolatry since last season with the Jazz Hands every time they name Jordin Sparks, and the Smashing of Slezak’s Album “Forever your girl” but now you’re amazing (just the fact that every time you name Kristy Lee Cook you show a robot kills me!!!) I love the editing of the clips and I love you guys, so funny!!!!(The teddy bear line was hilarious!)
