Is it time to chop 'Men in Trees' and close 'October Road'?

Menintrees_lI’ve championed Men in Trees and, okay, just October Road’s Geoff Stults on PopWatch, but I’d live if ABC decided not to renew these dramas for the fall. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that ABC let Lifetime ponder the idea of taking over the series — but that Lifetime decided against it.

Personally, I can’t blame the cable channel for passing. I’ve been DVR-ing Men in Trees since it returned last month — I skipped one episode entirely and fast-forwarded through another. I enjoy the cast, but none of the storylines are feeling must-see to me. On the other hand, I watched every hour of October Road’s 13-episode second season — mostly so I’d have something other than "Oh.My.God" to say to Stults if he ever showed up in my office, as promised. That series finale had a couple interesting turns — Aubrey kissed Nick’s brother! Eddie broke up with Janet after she slept with Rooster! Nick thought about someone other than himself (and decided to stay in the Ridge and get the Commander through chemo)! — but I don’t necessarily trust the show to steer out of them properly. It’s an ensemble drama, so screentime must be shared. I get that. But if something is earth-shattering one week (like Hannah deciding to let Big Cat adopt Sam, even though that means she’ll need to get his mystery biological father’s approval), I’d like it mentioned the next week.

THR thinks October Road is a goner, but that ABC might still renew Men in Trees. Should either be saved?

Honestly, I’m surprised they’ve made it this long.

I love, love, love Men in Trees. It became my new favorite after Gilmore Girls went off the air, however, the plot lines are getting more and more ridiculous (amnesia! boat crash! midgets!) so I won’t be surprised if it gets axed. Still have my fingers crossed that it gets saved though!!

I’ve long suspected that October Road outsources the writing to India. The English is flawless, but slightly… off, like the cultural idioms are different and they don’t quite get this culture. And it always seems like the person writing it has never actually lived in America, but rather seen a lot of episodes of Dawson’s Creek, Family Ties, and the movie Good Will Hunting. I’ll miss the show if they cancel it just because I’ll miss how ludicrous it is.

I love Men In Trees. ABC is killing it by changing the nights, holding it, airing it. It’s been such a mess. No wonder the ratings aren’t great. No one knows when it is on. Yes, the plot is a little annoying this year. Please ket Patrick get his memory back. And please let Jack and Marin have uninterrupted happiness for a few episodes. But I love the characters on this show, especially Marin, Jane, Sam, Jack and Teresa. Please save this show! Men in Trees rocks! ABC, I hope you are reading this…

Men In Trees to stay! I find it really warm and charming, and Anne Heche is brilliant (who knew?).
If ABC gave it a decent time slot and stuck to it, maybe it’d have a shot at getting better ratings. That and if the Patrick storyline comes to a rapid end.

I know that most of October Road is hokey, but I love it for just that fact. I have always been a sucker for a small new england town story set in the fall and has a literary, albeit a poor literary, factor in it. I would love to see October Road stay on for more seasons, but I know it will never be a hit.

Ditto EI – Men in Trees fills that quirky smalltownspeople void that Gilmore left behind. I caught up on the show last summer and absolutely adore it. If ABC would stop being so schizo on the scheduling, that would be a plus. Many of my co-workers have missed eps due to the constantly changing timeslots. ABC definitely needs to keep it — pair it with Scrubs when it (hopefully) airs next season.

I think Men in Trees jumped the shark when Patrick lost his memory. I’ve watched it until now, but I removed it from my TiVo list this past weekend in frustration with the crappy plotlines they’re making us suffer through. I’ve seen full blown soap operas that had less pointless drama.

Men In Trees is one of my main shows that I watch. I would like it to continue.

I love Men in Trees and would hate to bid Elmo, Alaska farewell. I’ve never watched October Road, so I have no opinion.

i liked october road when it was what about brian.

  • rosie

I too think October Road suffered from the What About Brian syndrome, but in a different way. Brian was my fave in its first season when the whole point was Brian feeling alienated from his friends and in love with his Bf’s girl. Then it meandered to no point before ending. Now I’m afraid October will end without Nick getting with Hannah which was clearly the point. If the show were going to have ten seasons it’d be ok but bad finale otherwise.

I love October Road and can’t stand Men in Trees. If they don’t have another season to let us know who’s the daddy, it will ll be a waste. I actually don’t see that much Nick & Hannah chemistry, but I do want the paternity question answered. Men in Trees is a weird cross between Twin Peaks & Grey’s…I just don’t get the appeal.

  • robin

What! I love both of these shows. They are so uncomplicated – in the way that some of my other fave shows are. (Lost makes my head hurt. Grey’s Anatomy fills me with angst.)

  • Kai-

I love Men in Trees, but I wouldn’t be completely heartbroken if it doesn’t come back in the fall. I keep waiting for it to recapture the magic it had before Jack’s ship sank and Patrick lost his memory. I tried to watch October Road, but I just couldn’t get into it.

  • Rebekah

Save October Road! It is a great show with lots of heart.

  • suzanne

I never miss an episode of men in trees, so I’d hate to lose it. I’ve seen a couple of episodes os Oct Road last summer and it didn’t keep my interest at all ( but I agree that Geoff S. is cute).
    Save men in trees.

  • Crystal

Jane and Plow Guy save Men in Trees every week. It’s nice comfort tv that I’d like to stay around.

  • Rae Rae

I got pretty invested in October Road, thanks to the writers strike, and I kind of would like to know what happens to these characters.

  • Kerri

I still really love Men in Trees. I watch every episode. It’s funny, quirky and different. I’d be bummed if it got canned.

  • Garry

So, some unknown columnist for “EW” skips a few episodes of “Men In Trees” and decides that the rest of us probably don’t care for it any more either? What a presumption!
The show continues to be “Must See” for my wife and I–the characters are not only funny and charming but very human and multi-layered. I like some of them better than others–and I even dislike one or two. But Anne Heche is wonderful, and the show deserves to continue as long as it maintains its quality.

  • Melissa

October Road is my guilty pleasure TV watching. It fills a nice void: it doesn’t sap any of my energy when I watch it. Even tho it was much better the first time the writer wrote it: When it was the movie Beautiful Girls. Scott Rosenberg is a one-trick pony, but girls like ponies.

  • Bobbi

I enjoy both shows and really don’t want either one of them to be cancelled. But then, I want them to bring Cashmere Mafia back too. :(

  • Dina

I really enjoy Men in Trees. I liked it even more on Thursday nights…it made a great night of guilty pleasure, enjoyable viewing when paired with Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy. I think it’s been very poorly treated by ABC in terms of scheduling, and deserves an uninterrupted run.

“Men in Trees” is still a must-see for me; while Marin and Jack’s storyline isn’t my fave, I adore the quirky side characters. Esp. Jane and Plowguy (Sam)! If this series was out on DVD, I’d have bought it by now, that’s for sure.

  • Dana

I love Men in Trees! I hope they keep it another season, part of the reason it has not been high in ratings it they have constantly been moving the shows day and time around and they run a few then it is off for months then they air a few more. ABC needs to stick to a time slot and night and run more then 2-4 episodes at a time in a row. I’d be very sad if it went off the air. I also do enjoy October Road as well

  • TexasOctRoadGirl (Pam)

I love October Road and feel that it should be given another chance in a better time slot…The actors and characters on this show are so believable and friendly…It really draws you in…There are so many loose ends that it would be nice to have some answers to the storylines. I would love to see a Season 3

  • WhitneyStults

October Road has a huge following! We would be greatly dissapointed if the show was cancelled.

  • avongal

Absolutely October Road should be saved!! It is fabulous show with great storylines. Sure, they may not mention from one show to the next about a previous storyline, but neither did Dallas, and look how successful that show was. Dynasty the same. But, it keeps drawing you back to find out now doesn’t it! This show has great characters, great storylines, and lots of “oh wow” moments that make it great. It is total MUST SEE TV!!!

  • elsie

October Road is great. The cast, although mostly new, have stepped up. The writing is creative and the story lines are catchy. I’d really like to see Season 3.
