I just found my 'Best of Branigan' CD! (What song should I play first?)

Categories: Dig it Out!, Music

I have this nasty habit of listening to CDs and not putting them back in their cases. So for me to pick up a pile of discs and find The Best of Branigan (the late Laura, that is), among them, is as pleasant a surprise as finding a $20 bill in a jacket you haven’t worn in awhile. I don’t know which song to play first. What would you choose?

"The Power of Love"

"How am I Supposed to Live Without You?"

(More choices after the jump.)

"Gloria"

"Self Control"

"The Lucky One"

"Solitaire"

P.S. I couldn’t find a video of "Over You" to embed, but it’s also in the running. And though they’re not on my disc, here are links to Laura singing "Forever Young," "Don’t Cry for Me Argentina," and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" anyway.

Spanish Eddie! R.I.P. Laura. We miss you.

This is one of my all time favorite cds and I play it constantly. So, I think you start at the beginning, relax and let the power and richness of Laura’s voice just flow over you. What a loss it was when she died!

How am I …. is one of the great pop songs.

  • Winona

Gotta pick “Solitaire” followed by “Self Control”. “Gloria”, while a great song, is just a little overplayed. Laura Branigan – wish she were still around. Great voice!

  • shonuff

    gloria, easily.
one of the greatest songs of the 80s.

  • Salome

You’re kidding right? None! Listen to none and burn it. And go back in time to give the girl some Cepacol spray for that scratchy throat.

“Sanctuary” is my all-time fave LB song, though I don’t know if it’s on the best of disc…

    LAURA BRANIGAN ROCKS!

  • kats

    “Self-Control” then “Solitaire”. Easy.

  • Ryan

    Self Control

  • Todd

I think Gloria JUST edges out Self Control for me, but it is a close one.
They both are my two faves though.

  • Nancy

She had enough songs to fill a “best of” CD? Who knew? I’d have to say “Gloria,” but that’s the only Laura Branigan song I know.

What no Spanish Eddie?!? Just kidding, kind of. I say Self Control then Solitaire. Damn! Now I want to find my Best of Branigan cd!!

GLORIA! Hands down her best song. Actually saw her at a music festival in the mid-80’s and she was excellent. RIP Laura. You are missed.

  • strickens_girl

She is my husband’s favorite singer ever. He has all her songs on his iPod. I’d go with Self Control first, personally.

Love Laura! Personally I prefer “How Can I Help You To Say Goodbye”…I even recommended it to a friend to play at her mom’s funeral. It made her break up pretty bad when it came on…

One of the most underappreciated voices of the ’80s. Listen in this order:
Gloria (must be the first one)
    Self-Control
    Solitare
    The Lucky One
Moonlight On Water (can’t believe you forget this gem)
How Am I Suppose To Live Without You

  • Tom

Let’s not forget Ti Amo, people, or Shattered Glass.

  • Broadway Baby

I’m surprised there is a competition when Gloria is an option.

  • Slezak

You should play “Moonlight on Water,” of course!

David Spade on Weekend Update: “So, in closing, Kevin, in closing, I’m going to see Laura Branigan tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden, and, uh.. I have some advice for her: open and close with “Gloria”. Do it a couple times in between, alright? Thank you very much!”
    Lordy, the crap I remember…

  • Mike

She had a few songs that were alright. But, Gloria was easily the best. No matter how often it was played on the radio.

  • Jim

I think it was her first hit. I know it was her biggest. “All the voices in my head calling, Gloria”.

  • Rick

Definitely Gloria…with one of the best lines ever…”If everybody wants you, why isn’t anybody calling??!”
Quickly followed by Self Control…then you can cry yourself to sleep with How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.

  • Don

How can you leave Xena and the Charmed ones off that list. Then kick so six that it’s unreal.

  • TV Addict

I got chills during Power of Love. I always loved the way she sang the heck out of that song. Way better than Celine’s version!

  • Rob

I always loved “Ti Amo” which iI’m not sure was a single. But it was on the Self Control cassette, which I listened the hell out of in my basement.
I’m amazed how dated and LA-in-the-80s these sound. “Solitaire” sounds like the theme to Knots Landing!

  • Martha

I just heard “Self Control” at the grocery store this morning, so have to go with that one. Especially because of those “Oh-oh-oh”s (bam) towards the end.

  • Jennifer

Oh you gotta go with Gloria!!
