I only fear for a film remake of “Dune” as overshadowing the quite excellent SciFi sequel, “Children of Dune”. Fewer hats, more wit, one truly spectacular closing-episode montage-to-music, and James McAvoy both shirtless AND acting. Oh, and Daniela Amavia’s Alia was to kill for. I even liked Susan Sarandon camping up a storm as Arachnia, Queen of the Spider People. Or whatever her name was, it looked like Arachnia, Queen of the Spider People. (Best VOY episode liek evor1)

Hey, give me Sting ANYDAY and especially in a silver speedo! He’s the only reason to watch an otherwise incredibly boring movie. And Peter Berg is a good director but can’t handle such a sprawling sci-fi epic.

Sci-Fi’s miniseries was as close as I think we’re going to get.
W/ David Lynch’s version around for giggle-factor (sorry… but I just can’t get past the — like you said — silver-speedoed Sting and the — how I remember it at least — flying meatloaf-creature).
    PLEASE!!! DON’T MAKE ANOTHER DUNE!!!

Dune brings up bad memories for me. In college, my boyfriend who loved Dune made me watch it. When I told him this was a very cheesy and boring movie, he yelled at me and we got in a big fight. Maybe the book or sci-fi series are good, but I’ll never know. So please, no more Dune!!

I don’t think we needed the first version of Dune, or any movie where Sting tries to act.

    Yawn.
1.) It does not matter what the ignorant think about The Phantom Menace – the movie was HUGE hit and remains in the top 5 movies of all time. And I loved it!
2.) Dune is a great story, and could easily be broken into 2 films to fully capture Frank Herbert’s vision.
The Lynch version of Dune got the characters right but botched the story. The Sci-Fi version got the story right but lacked quality special effects.
I want a new version of Dune and know that with 2 2-hour movies, good actors, and a big effects budget it will amaze audiences as much as it has readers over and over again.
People who do not get the politics of Dune or the Star Wars prequels are merely ignorant of history and what leads to the rise and fall of governments and societies. Lucas tried to dumb it down for the lowest common denominators in the audience with the “you are either with me or against me” line from Anakin, but the ignorance of the under-educated remains. Study History, dummys!

I would like to add that according to legend, one of the obvious problems with the first version was that there was a huge production and direction battle. The battle was so bad that when the movie was shot, the actors and actresses were not very happy and neither was David Lynch. And yes, the movie like Star Wars was based on government formations and downfalls. Lets face it, Herbert and Lucas both liked Greek, Roman, and western Civ. when they went to college.

Well, the Sci-Fi channel’s version may have been more true to the story, but despite all the problems, the visual and cinematic appeal of Lynch’s picture were just head and shoulders above that of the TV mini-series feel of the Sci-Fi channel epic. As an absolute Devotee of the original screen adaptation (in my top 10), I am eager to see how cool a next century CGI laiden adaptation of the story might be. Maybe it wont make much profit for the producers, but I for one await the film in eager anticipation

Enough Dune’s already; when are Clooney and Scott or Scorsese going to get around to Nine Princes in Amber? Geez!
