So this week’s Billboard has a positive review of Josh Kelley’s new single, "Unfair," and I figured it was high time I gave a listen the work of the man who’s married to Katherine Heigl. Oddly enough, when I got to YouTube, I found two videos for the track: A fan-made clip featuring a plaintive, mirror-image golden retriever, and the official version, starring a scarf-wrapped Kelley on his acoustic guitar. The dueling videos prompted the following discussion with my colleague Gary Susman:
Slezak: Okay, is it me, or is the video with the golden retriever better?
Gary: Yeah, Josh’s scarf is bothering me.
Slezak: Absolutely! And why is he wearing headphones?
Gary: Could he be trying any harder to land an iPod ad?
Slezak: Ugh. And the dancing!
Gary: Oh, it’s awful. We should ask readers to rate the two videos: Golden retrievers vs. Josh.
Slezak: YES! Because, actually, it’s actually not a bad song. But the official video makes me like it less.
Gary: And besides, all these Josh Kelley/Jack Johnson types make me think of golden retrievers, thick sweaters, driftwood, and lattes.
Slezak: Totally lattes.
So here’s your challenge, PopWatchers. Check out the YouTube user-made video below, and then the Josh Kelley-approved clip after the jump, and weigh in on which one is better. You know this decision is gonna go to the dogs, don’t you?

Is he supposed to look like a bad dancer? If so, very successful.
The dog thing is better. Sheesh, what’s up with the scarf?
That “official” video was seriously painful. It looked like someone got a little fancy with the settings on their handy-cam. And sweet baby Jesus, what was he wearing?
At least the golden retriever seems mildly in touch with the lyrics of the song.
Oooff, that was rough. It’s odd to me that a voice that deep would come from such a pipsqueak of a body.
Ugh, both the song and the video are horrible! What’s up with the scarf? Why the ipod? Is he listening to himself? Or he listening to a much better song because he hates his own lame song so much? The whole thing just made me laugh out loud. Couldn’t Heigl throw a few $$$ his way to hire a real producer and director?
I like the second video better. I think it’s refreshing that Josh looks like he isn’t taking himself too seriously. He probably knows his dancing is ridiculous! Also, I think he has an ipod on ’cause if you watch the beginning closely I think he’s singing and playing live along with the recording ’cause when I found the recording and listened to it the recording doesn’t start off acoustic. But what he’s singing syncs up with the recording perfectly. So since that part’s live, we know that the man can really sing! It’s a goofy video, but it just seems to me like it’s supposed to be. The dog, personally, weirds me out.
Personally I love this video. It is meant to be funny…and Josh used to be a ballroom dance instructor so he was just having fun! The song rocks the album rocks go buy it!
he’s way too hairy. the singer, i mean, not the dog.
The dog video is totally better. His video annoys me for multiple reasons.
I can honestly say I’ve never been more distracted by a scarf. Also, that dog video is genius.
Dog wins.
Scarf=Musical Genius (haven’t you been paying attention to American Idol Michael “Idolatry” Slezak??) It doesn’t, however, not have magical dancing skills attached. (If the song content were a little more goofy and not so sad – for lack of a better word – maybe, MAYBE the dancing wouldn’t be so off the wall in the context of the video.)
The dogs fading out and then the jerky move bothered me too much… I’d say its a push.
That scruff of his has got to go. Matthew Fox scruff=attractive. This dude scruff=trying too hard
Thanks a bunch for sharing this with all folks you really recognize what you’re speaking approximately! Bookmarked. Kindly also discuss with my website =). We may have a link alternate agreement between us
