I remember being in middle school and renting “P.S. Your Cat Is Dead” with my grandmother. (Both of us were huge Lombardo Boyar fans at the time). The girl behind the counter gave us a weird look as we stood there, giggling about how much fun we were gonna have watching that movie. Oh, and then there was yesterday when I rented “Enchanted” and “Roadhouse” at the same time.

I was suffering from cineparanoia so bad when I rented Catwoman that as soon as I handed the movie to the clerk I said “It’s for my niece. I’m babysitting and she asked me to rent it.” Completely untrue, of course.

Definetly happened when I tried to rent Brokeback mountain.I am black so the look the clerk gave me (she was black)likeI was betraying all black people, I wanted to crawl in a hole and disappear.

Normally I would say that you were crazy for thinking that the opinion of a video store clerk was worthy of your concern (and I say this as a former video store employee), but three days ago I found myself explaining why I was renting ‘No Reservations’ and ‘The Jane Austen Book Club’ on my wife’s behalf before she sent away with some friends on a girls’ weekend getaway. I don’t think the clerk cared…

Aw, Gretchen, the guy is a video store clerk. He has to get his jollies on what may possibly be the most boring job by judging the customer. Next time tell him to make it snappy, the voices in your head are getting louder!

i rented The 25th Hour, which remains one of my favorite movies of all time, at the same time as seeing if the store had a copy of From Justin to Kelly. Of course, that was the one he announced over the loudspeaker for all to hear.
