A real 'Beverly Hills, 90210' spinoff (as opposed to 'Dancing With the Stars')

The CW has fast-tracked the pilot for a contemporary spinoff of Beverly Hills, 90210. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is considering penning said pilot — acceptable. It may or may not include any of the original characters — not acceptable. Right?

Who would you like to see return? I’m pulling for Brandon Walsh, if only so Jason Priestley will recreate the double fist pump from the show’s opening (below). Years ago, I used to watch morning Buffy the Vampire Slayer repeats on FX, and 90210 followed it. I would literally do the double fist pump with Priestley, then change the channel. Every morning.

It appears that god has actually been listening to my prayers afterall…
I still heart this show more then anything ever, I have the final episode saved in my tivo for all eternity!

so help me, if this is an andrea zuckerman or steve sanders spinoff, i am going to cry myself to sleep ever night. don’t mess with perfection, please! the only was i would watch this is if it featured brenda coming back to beverly hills and teaching at west beverly. that i would watch. she’ll teach theater after her long and illustrious stage career in london. she’ll introduce herself to the class by doing a dramatic reading of rem’s “losing my religion.” it’d be great.

  • Nix

    I second the Brenda return.

  • Nick

Rob Thomas back in action. AWESOME. I’m there solely for that reason.

  • melissa

do you have an address for Rob Thomas so I can send a letter and personally beg him to write this?

  • JoeC

Unless Shannen Doherty(Brenda Walsh) is there, then this is a bad idea. Without her 90210 was just another bad Aaron Spelling show. Bring back Brenda!

  • GeeMoney

Can’t they just make a spin-off show called “Brenda: Why did your character leave 90210″ and make it all about her? I swear, 90210 was never the same after Shannen Doherty left.

    let donna martin graduate

Well, lets be realistic if we’re bringing back the original cast/characters. I don’t know how many HS sophomores-seniors can be realistically be the children of the original cast. Its bad enough that soap operas send 8 year olds off to boarding school in the fall and they return at Christmas as brooding 16-year olds facing an unwanted pregnancy or something like that.

  • BOTR

“I don’t know how many HS sophomores-seniors can be realistically be the children of the original cast.”
The closest to this is Andrea’s daughter Hannah that was born at the end of the fourth season, but she would be only 14. Also, don’t forget Kelly and David’s sister Erin was born in ‘92 which would make her 15-16 years old, perfect for this spin-off.

  • Lyn

Oh my gosh- my guy friends are the BH 90210 boys grown up. I am so lame.

  • Vance

someone just emailed me about this earlier today. I thought it was a joke.
    A bad bad joke.

  • Abby

I park myself on the eliptical everyday at the gym and tune in on the SOAP Network. I freaking LOVE this show. But once they got to college and Brenda left it got worse. The high school episodes are the best hands down.
    P.S. I would totally tune in to a spin-off.

  • Working Girl

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I want – nay, demand – the return of any regular prior from the high school era, and I reject the return of anyone who became a regular in or after CU (I’m talking to you, Noah and Matt).

  • Vicky

Holy crap! That opening is a minute and half long!! It never ended. Loved the fist pump though!

  • snarky

Luke Perry needs work. I heart Dylan!

  • melissa

This could go either way for me. The show had a good run but we’re, what, eight years out? Yet somehow I STILL catch my husband whistling the theme song.

  • Meghan

Well considering I tivo two episodes of 90210 everyday, I’d definitely be up for watching a spin off! Dylan forever.

  • Chelsea

I’m all for it as long as they erase the utter ridulousness it was for Kelly and Dylan to end up together…they broke my Brenda/Dylan shipping heart! :(

  • Roman

I’m gonna go against the majority on here and say that this is most likely a bad idea. I love Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars is my favorite show in the history of the world) and 90210 is undoubtedly one of the greatest teen shows ever created. However, spin-offs just don’t work that well (See: Joey, Golden Palace), so I think this could possibly be doomed from the get-go. Also, the CW really needs to actually try and find something original to put on the air if they don’t want to be destined as the netlet of castoffs forever. However, if Rob Thomas does indeed end up penning this, I’ll probably still tune in for at least the pilot.

Please let it be Kelly and Brandon’s daughter going to a new school with Donna and David’s son. Andrea could be a teacher at the school with her kid going there also. Brandon could be a newspaper editor and Kelly and Donna could be working in a fashion store. I would watch that especially if Rob Thomas make Brandon and Kelly’s daughter like a Veronica clone and David and Donna’s son into a Logan clone. I need to see my LoVe

  • marilinda

so glad that i am not the only one who enjoys the double fist pump. almost as great as luke perry’s double eyebrow pump!
that opening is killer. except for cindy potter’s jack-o-lantern smile. creepies.

  • Ellipsian

Merely “acceptable”, Mandi?! Really!? Rob Thomas is something of a genius in my mind (I’m totally with you and the “Veronica” love, Roman, though “Buffy” is my fave-ever show) and I certainly trust him to create something worthy of our (and his) time.

  • Bethann

Hey BOTR–LOVE the idea of Erin Silver being the new “Kelly” of the show. That would be genius! As far as anyone returning, the 1st thing I thought of was Brandon as the newspaper advisor. I barely remember the series finale except for Donna and David’s wedding. But Erin could be living with Donna and David for some reason. That would leave doors open for other past characters to come back for guest spots. As far as the opening goes–BEST SHOW OPENING EVER!! I’ve been watching Season 3 on DVD and I watch the opening EVERY time. The opening chords are so great. But I have to say the creepiest part for me is Donna’s little bit where she’s standing with David on one side and Dylan nuzzling her ear on the other side and then you see Steve walking towards her. There is a lot of ickiness that conjurs up!!

  • StaleCake

Bring back BRENDA! As a hard-livin’, boozy, sexaholic, woman in her 40’s, played by Shannon Doherty. Failing that, Miley Cyrus could also do that role perfectly.

  • StaleCake

Bring back ANDREA as the matriarch of the show. She must be like 78 or 79 years old now right?

  • To Roman

Not true – Degrassi: The Next Generation did exactly this concept (the teens are now the parents), and is a hit worldwide, even bigger than the first Degrassi. If they got a showrunner from Degrassi, and Darren Starr, this could kick a**.

  • Anonymous

That would be great. Luke Perry guested on What I Like About You (Jennie Garth’s show) and they were great. I would love to see all the old characters in present day!

  • Anne

Love 90210. Loved it in prime time. Loved it when it came on 6 times a day on FX (watching the reruns made my maternity leave 6 years ago) and love it on soapnet. Would give the spin off show a chance, so long as Dylan and Steve get air time.
Bethann, I am with you. I never liked the Tori Spelling sandwich complete with Dylan ear nuzzle. Gross.

  • Kimi

LOVE the double fist pump. I used to watch it and turn it off, too.
