As I wrote in 2004, when EW named Square Pegs one of the TV shows we were dying to get on DVD, a misfit Sarah Jessica Parker + the comic angst of Freaks and Geeks x the emotional resonance of My So-Called Life ÷ the acerbic absurdity of Popular = it’s time! And finally, it is. The 1982-83 series has been given a May 20 release date. Creator Anne Beatts told us four years ago that she had a few ideas for extras: commentary on ”Muffy’s Bat Mitzvah” (below); a tribute to the show’s innovative use of rock (the Waitresses! Devo! guest star Bill Murray dancing to Billy Idol!), and one very special character update, ”Where is the Guatemalan child now?” Let’s hope she gets her way.
What other TV shows are you still dying to get on DVD?

“The Wonder Years” of course. Not sure why that hasn’t come out yet since it was so in tune with my fellow boomers and was popular for so long. Perhaps it’s a conflict with getting all the music clearances. If so, I certainly hope they wait until they can get it right, with the actual songs, and not end up like the butchered “WKRP in Cincinnati” set that just came out with generic muzak replacing the original music. My guilty pleasure request? “Cop Rock” Darn, I’m a sucker for that catchy, clever, yet occasionally insane nonsense…
My top choice is absolutely “The Wonder Years.” LOVE that show.
Also, although the show is far from perfect, and sort of went off the rails relatively quickly, I’d love to get some “Ally McBeal” on TV. When I was in college I used to enjoy catching it at 10 in the morning on FX, but now it’s not on anywhere (that I know of).
I realize that the rights to the music on each of these shows are what’s mostly holding them up, but let’s get this deal straightened out so I can (unnecessarily) add more DVDs to my already too-huge collection.
Also, I’d LOVE to get Complete Seasons of “The Larry Sanders Show.” I don’t care how good people say the “Not Just the Best of Larry Sanders” collection is…I’m holding out for complete seasons of a hilarious show. (Also, I’m scared that as soon as I shell out money for “Not Just the Best”, they’ll announce the release of complete seasons.
Parker Lewis Can’t Lose and They Came From Outer Space.
Seasons 2, 3, and 4 of Everwood!!
Not Necessarily the News. It spoofed the news but it was just as funny as The Daily Show.
jack & jill! i can’t even find it on any illegal downloading sites. sad.
Agreed with G that Parker Lewis needs to be on DVD, as does Get a Life.
How about movies that never made the cut? While the good version of Blade Runner and a dvd of Flash Gordon are finally available, I’m still waiting for the popwatch genie to deliver 80’s teen romps “Up the Creek” and “Joysticks” to the digital format.
Stephanie T, I miss the Snigglets!
DUET…cute show from the 80’s
After watching the great new Vh1 show Free Radio for the past few weeks, I went looking for The Lance Krall Show (which was on Spike TV a few years back) on DVD, and couldn’t find it. A cult hit, perhaps, but worthy of a DVD, I think, especially with much of the cast on a new, current show…
(1) Cupid – for God’s sake, please put this out on dvd
(2) The rest of The Nanny
(3) The rest of Everwood
The 2nd to 6th seasons of “St. Elsewhere”. The first season is already released, but the show didn’t hit its stride (and true greatness) until the second year.
“The Life and Times of Molly Dodd”!!!
Now and Again, Cupid, Relativity. Life will then have meaning.
Ed.
In a world where you can but The Hills on DVD, why is there no Ed?
I almost cried at the video store the other day when I saw on the shelf season one of October Road, where the acting isn’t as good, the relationships aren’t nearly as believable, and defying all laws of nature, it is always the fall. But no Ed.
Sigh.
The nostalgic teenager in me really misses Head of the Class and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.
Please release Ed!!
austen geek, I too am dying for Now & Again and Cupid on DVD–as a MOF, I just googled a couple days ago for any news on possible releases… sigh. I have both series (minus 1 or 2 eps each) on VHS, but it’s just not the same.
Cupid and Early Edition.
Designing Women
Duet was good, but I’d like to see its spinoff Open House, which co-starred Ellen DeGeneres as Margo the secretary.
Parker Lewis: genius Popwatchers! And whoever busted out “Duet” – two points for you. The problem I find is some of the obscure shows I’ve looked for (Airwolf? Wiseguy) is that they are super-expensive for the whole shabang.
Homefront!! And I agree with those that have said Everwood seasons 2, 3, and 4- how can they release just one season and then leave the fans hanging?!
EVERWOOD!!! First of all, I love that show. Second of all, just one season is ridiculous! Thirdly… Bright & Hannah’s relationship needs to be documented forever!!!
Also, Undressed from MTV! So many lol’s on that show. Quality entertainment.
THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN!
The 1960’s Batman series. Where the heck is it?
And ditto The Six Million Dollar Man. And the original Bionic Woman.
Seasons 2, 3 and 4 of A Different World. Season 1 sucked. The last season sucked. But the ones in between are classics!
I would gnaw off my arm for Thirtysomething on DVD!
Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed!
I cannot say it enough (clearly)!
ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE.
The DVD gods have managed to get 1.200 plus episodes of Dark Shadows out on DVD, how about the brilliant 19 episodes of ARCTU. Curse you FOX TV and your itchy cancellation finger.
