John Lennon would have taken this as a tribute and he would have loved to see his songs performed this way.
I on the other hand, don’t need to see this talentless bunch perform the songs I love. Give me some Cheap Trick “Magical Mystery Tour” and that’s all I want in a Beatles cover, or Ray Charles “Eleanor Rigby”…tell me any of these jokes could do as well with these songs.
I know these aren’t Lennon-McCartney songs, but if they could choose from the entire Beatles catalog, I’d love to hear Jason do “Here Comes the Sun.” Although since that’s a tad predictable for him, I’d like to hear his take on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” — I think he could do a really good acoustic, vulnerable version of that.
I just think this night is going to suck. See Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (the movie).
i’m keeping an open mind. of course they won’t all be good. as long as they don’t do disco versions of any of the songs, they shouldn’t be too dire. a little country twist or SLIGHT r&b twist of a lennon/mccartney song isn’t the end of the world. it’s just an interpratation (sp?), not a re-write, relax.
daisyj- I totally agree with you. If you only know 4 Beatles songs you have no business trying to become a performer
Are there only 25 to choose from because the rights are divided among so many people? Did only one person release their rights? I’d guess the songs owned by Michael(I’m broke)Jackson. Which if I’m not mistaken is mostly the older stuff but we’ll see. I just really hope they are inventive of course if I survived “Across the Universe”, I can manage tonight. My husband really wants someone to cover Eleanor Rigby.
Me again. I did a little research. From what I can tell Idol got the entire songbook as owned by Sony. However, they made a list of 25 songs, none after Revolver. If this is true that sucks. All my favorite stuff comes after Revolver/Rubber Soul. It makes the night less interesting for sure.
Here comes the sun was not written by Lennon/mccartney. It is was written by the equally talented but under rated George Harrison
