EW critic Ken Tucker and I continue our recent debate over who’s the better singer, Kelly Clarkson or Bob Dylan, then throw down on the ideal song choices for Idol contestants Brooke White, David Hernandez, and Carly Smithson. Let’s hear your request lists in the comments section below.

Thanks for the Ken/Michael segment – nice surprise on a dreary Tuesday. I don’t have my hopes up very high, because (a) the songs will have to be edited for time – and that’s not a great thing and (b) you know someone will sing your favorite (if you have one) song – and it will probably be your least favorite contestant. (Like Syesha or Kristi Lee singing “Hey Jude” or “I Saw Her Standing There” for me).
I wonder if this will go the way of the anti-Whitney/Mariah angle, where contestants are encouraged not to shoot themselves in the foot and “run out of talent” while trying to tackle some good songs. This might become a one-shot theme.
Amanda should sing “Oh! Darling,” totally.
I want to hear:
“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
“We Can Work it Out”
“Penny Lane”
“Revolution”
Don’t really care who sings what.
I would love to hear Jason Castro sing “Here Comes the Sun” or “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-a”. Both are happy upbeat songs that seem to fit his personality. David Cook could probably do something fun with “Eleanor Rigby” or “Revolution”. David Archuleta would do a great job on “The Long and Winding Road” but it’s another slow one…He should do something uptempo this week like “She Loves You.” I would love to hear Brooke’s take on “Yesterday.” Amanda should also try to slow things down a bit, maybe with “In My Life”??
Sorry…”Ob-la-Da”
I agree Slezak, Amanda should totally sing I Want You (She’s So Heavy), it would really suit her. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jason Castro singing a slowed down version of Girl (in the same vein as Jim Sturgess in Across the Universe). I see Michael Johns doing With a Little Help From My Friends, and Brooke doing I Will. Lil’ David should do something like Michelle and Carly should do You Never Give Me Your Money.
Actually, with a catalogue so saturated with fantastic songs, it’s more a matter of what NOT to sing. Here’s a short list:
Yellow Submarine
Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da
Run for your Life
Happiness is a warm gun
Why don’t we do it in the road
I’m sure there’s a few more but I’ll let others add on to this list.
“You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)”
Jason should sing Lovely Rita and Michael Johns should sing Come Together and David Cook should sing Lady Madonna.
I think Brooke would be good at I’m Looking Through You.
and Kristy Lee should sing Being for the Benefit for Mr. Kite, because i hate that song!
I would love to hear Jason sing ‘Blackbird’ although that might be a tad predictable. I could see Amanda doing ‘Helter Skelter’. I hope David C takes a slow song and does his thang with it again, maybe this time ‘Let it Be’. On 2nd thought, that might be a disaster.
Sidebar: Can somebody fix the error on the first page that states India Arie has an album out called World War 4? It is Erykah’s album not India’s
To RTA: I’m with you on Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da, but what is wrong with Happiness is a warm gun? It could be interesting!
What about Because for Brooke. Jason should sing I’ve just seen a face.
I don’t envy these kids tackling such a huge and well-loved songbook, although I’m sure most of the teenybopper audience will have no appreciation for it. What a shame.
Dear God, please stop this from happening.
David C could totally rock out ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’.
