Should David Hernandez be stripped of 'Idol' status?

Davidhernandezidol_lHe is soooooo the Antonella of season 7 … but way better. American Idol contestant David Hernandez, who’s slated to perform with the rest of the Top 8 Guys tonight, reportedly used to shed his typically very well-matched clothes at Dick’s Cabaret, a "mostly male" strip club in Phoenix.

The news is fairly easy to believe. As Michael Slezak, who is kind of into Idol, just noted via e-mail, "He does move really well up there on the stage." Actually, I remember thinking during his Top 12 Guys performance of "The Midnight Hour" that he wasn’t moving enough, and had instead decided to plant his feet in place as if setting some kind of three-minute pick. (Basketball reference on PopWatch!) It was almost as if he was on someone’s lap! Now I understand.

Former strippers are on a serious roll in Hollywood, so I say let’s give this one a chance, if only for the hot moves David could whip out until Idol gives him the boot. What do you think?

UPDATE: According to the Associated Press, Hernandez will remain on the show despite his past. He’ll perform tonight as planned. (Of course, it’s been taped already!)

Basketball reference on popwatch! I love you Annie Barrett.

As long as the hot moves are the *only* thing he whips out. (I couldn’t resist.)

I completely agree! He’s good looking and, now that we know he must have some hidden moves, he could definitely bring them to the Idol stage. Besides, if a former stripper (and certain EW columnist) can win an Oscar, who’s to say another one can’t compete on Idol? I love how the media covers this like it’s some big scandal. Should we all be publicly crucified for possible errors in judgment in our past? Besides, he didn’t do anything wrong or illegal; he was a stripper, for crying out loud. Lighten up, people! Btw, I love how the media keeps saying it was a strip club with a “mostly male” clientele. As if even the hint of gayness would somehow make this even more scandalous (which, in this society, of course it does). I say again to anyone up in arms over this: lighten up and let the man sing.

I don’t mind that he was a stripper. I mind that he still moves like one. If I’m going to tolerate that kind of cheesy movement, I want to see some SKIN.
But he’s very good if I close my eyes.

OK with me – as long as a certain “fierce-ish” contestant doesn’t feel the need to compete, ala hysterically crying when he realized a popular fellow contestant was getting mad camera time last week when he was upset. This is America – why can’t our “Idols” have exotic dancing on their resumes?

My 12 year old watches this show! What am I supposed to tell her? Yes, honey, you can take your clothes off for money, do it for years, and it’s no big deal, you can then go on and become the next American Idol? I personally don’t have anything against the guy, but I cringe at the thought of my kid learning this information. It’s difficult to explain that this is not normal, and most strippers do not get these opportunities. It sends a confusing message to the little ones. And Idol does market itself as a family show.

I say if (ex-)strippers are allowed to win Oscars, they should be allowed on Idol ! Just putting things in perspective, here… : )
But you can bet I’ll be checking out his moves from now on !

I don’t really care whether he was a stripper or not, but why is it okay that they eliminated Frenchie Davis for being a phone sex girl and posing for some sort of web site, but not him for being a stripper? It seems like a double standard, doesn’t it? (Please note that I don’t think Frenchie should have been eliminated, nor do I think David should…but they should be consistent with their rules…)

I am so digging the basketball reference (woo hoo March Madness!) but Vote for the Worst broke this story about 2 weeks ago. :)

I don’t care that he’s a stripper, and I actually think this news will do nothing but help him. David H. has been one of my favorites this year, but has been suffering from a relatively-low profile. This can only make him more interesting (since, unfortunately, being a good singer isn’t enough to guarantee you longevity in this competition).
I don’t remember the exact circumstances regarding Frenchie’s elimination (nor am I familiar with Idol’s rules), but Rebecca DOES bring up a good point about there being a double standard.
I can’t help but think that if David H were a woman, there would be a lot more people who would look down on him more and judge him for “degrading” himself, instead of saying things like “that’s great” and “those moves could help him on stage.”

  • Ceballos

Why’d you guys just change the photo with his item…was showing him from the torso on up too risque?

  • Eli

Diablo Cody and DAvid Hernandez prove that you don’t have to be good looking to have a career in stripping. I LOVE THAT.

  • Nick

He’s been a favorite of mine since I first saw him… If I have any complaint, he wears TOO much clothing. The boy has good arms…wear a short sleeved shirt, darn it. :)

Karen: If your daughter is as sheltered as you make her out to be, how is she going to know that David was a stripper in the first place? Most of the stuff on Cartoon Network these days is more offensive than this guy having been a stripper. And don’t even get me started on most of the pasts of the politicians running this country, so don’t be dissing on Idol contestants for crying out loud. I’m sure you have a few skeletons in your closet too. How about instead of bashing David for his stripper past, you use this situation to teach your daughter that making mistakes doesn’t mean we should crucify people and we should give them a chance to make something positive of themselves. Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Come on now ~ anyone over the age of ” thirteen ” who watches this crap is in dire need of some culture.
Try listening to some classsical or jazz music ~ expand your musical horizons.
Music for adults , not children.
Try listening to an English soprano singer who pees on every little American Crap singer (or any singer for that matter ), her name is Sarah Brightman and has an amazing voice with real range !
Do any of you realize that the New York Philharmonic just played a concert in South Korea , breaking down cultural barriers with their TRUE talent ?
” Hip-Hoppin’ With The Stars ” is not TALENT !
