Is Ashton Kutcher a leading man?

Annashtonjennifer_lAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, Anne Heche is replacing Jennifer Jason Leigh opposite Ashton Kutcher in the indie comedy Spread. Kutcher and Heche will "mix it up in the tale of a womanizer and the lover hescorns." I’ve got a couple of thoughts:

(1) Which couple is odder: Kutcher and Leigh, who dropped out of the project, or Kutcher and Heche? I like that he’s steering clear of the Tara Reids and Brittany Murphys — and think he held up OK opposite Amanda Peet in A Lot Like Love and should do fine with Cameron Diaz in this May’s What Happens in Vegas — but is Heche (or Leigh) someone you’d picture him acting opposite?

(2) If not, is Kutcher really a leading man? I just had a conversation with a colleague who used the word genius to describe Kutcher’s talent as a producer (Punk’d, Beauty and the Geek). She thinks he should work more behind the camera for TV and focus on features that cast him as one of the boys instead of half a couple.

What would your plan for Kutcher be?

He is not my idea of a leading man. But that’s OK…I don’t go to see his movies.

I wouldn’t cast him as the leading man either. I think he needs to work his way up to that success. He should go for great supporting roles in indies, and make that success happen. I think he has the chops as a producer, just not as an actor.

I had dood totally written off until he did Butterfly Effect. It wasn’t a great movie, but something about those scenes with Kutcher waking up to a new reality had such a believability to them. He’s got that “it” factor in an oddball way.
If he wants to take over, no more of those buddy movies with aging action stars. He needs to do a movie that’ll do for him what SPeed and the Matrix did for Keanu. One of those gets him the nutguard to do as many sappy romantic flicks as he wants.

I agree, Ep Sato. I wanted to hate Butterfly Effect, but there was something surprisingly vulnerable in Ashton K’s performance. I’d give him another shot as a leading man.

After seeing “The Butterfly Effect,” I know that he has the talent. He was very good in that as he stretch pass his Kelso-like persona. I just think he is choosing the wrong films. He needs to be in less dumb comedies & more complex & interesting films that let him show his chops.

I’m with NineDaves, Ashton would be stronger as a supporting character for now. (I liked Butterfly Effect, but it would have been even better with a more established star).
Behind the scenes he’s awesome. Maybe with the right material, he could give Judd Apatow a run for his money as the next great comedy producer.

Who cares about Kutcher. I’m more excited that Heche–such a distinct, interesting actor–is getting great parts again, after a few years of wacky, unfair press.

I had always kinda wished that Kutcher had played the sidekick role in last summer’s Die Hard 4. That would’ve been fun although I did love Apple guy in it, Anyways, I’d like to see what he could do directed by someone like Greengrass or Eastwood. I wouldn’t care what the movie was but it would be great to see him take direction from a really established action/drama director. For comedy, he should stay behind the camera. He’s got a great touch there and he doesn’t need to be in front doing the same old, same old. Although…if he could take on an old Preston Sturgess comedy and update it – something like the Palm Beach Story or Sullivan’s Travels – more funny and less silly, that would be fun.

Have you seen the preview for “What Happens in Vegas”? Looks absolutely horrible. But the guy can’t do much worse than “Butterfly Effect” which was laughably idiotic.

He’ll always be Kelso to me !

Find a real director to work with.
Martin Scorsese, pushed Leo out from being just another “pretty face” to a real actor.
