Accidentally singing in public: embarrassing or endearing?

This morning during my commute, I had Foreigner’s "Hot Blooded" stuck in my head. Read the full post.

I was driving around town in my sebring with the top down not even an hour ago (i live in FL btw, so i can) and i pulled up at a red light blaring Cobra Starship “City is at War” I was singing my heart out for about a min before i realized EVERYONE at the light was looking at me… I think they were just jealous they couldnt rock out with me. I just smiled to myself and drove off :)

A friend of mine stopped at a 7-11. He is a forty-something year old MAN with grey hair and a pot belly. He got out of his car, not realizing that the tune in his head was actually coming out of his mouth. Loudly. He realized what he was doing when a group of teenaged girls getting into the car next to him started howling with laughter. What song was he singing? “Don’t you wish your boyfriend was hot like me. . . ”

In theory, it is endearing, especially of someone does it for only a few seconds. In practice, however, I just want the dude singing along with the beyonce in his head in a weirdly high pitched voice on the quiet car of the VRE to just shut the f up so I can read my book in peace. mouthing the words is ok, but singing on public transportation is never ok. It causes normally nice and even somewhat patient people like me to slowly lose their minds. I finally ended up just buying a way too expensive house (I would have bought an affordable one, but those don’t exist in the DC area) closer to my job to avoid public transportation. Ah, the sweet sounds of silence in the morning.

It’s only funny if the person…
    a) doesn’t realize they are singing out loud and get embarrassed as soon as they realize (like one time when I was jogging, this lady was belting out Alanis Morissette’s ‘Everything’ as loud as she possibly could, but somehow remained oblivious to how loud she actually was…so all of us other joggers were having a good laugh amongst ourselves)
    b) is quietly mouthing the words as to not really disturb anyone
BUT If you’re fully aware of what you are doing and singing loudly, then it ain’t cute. it’s rude. nobody wants to be subjected to your bad singing. you’re not going to be discovered as the next whitney, mariah and leona.

Oh god, as a singer who used to live in the suburbs with a car… and now has lived in Mahattan for the last five years, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve caught myself either singing out loud, or making a facial expression that’d I’d make if I was performing. Definitely embarrassing. But I laugh when other people do it!

i’m all for the subway singing (and dancing). it’s never embarrassing. in fact, the other day, i was doing a little “part of your world” from the little mermaid (what – the ipod was on shuffle, and i was feeling a little nostalgic). nonetheless, not one but TWO people joined in. oh the r train…
