If you’re like the rest of us movie geeks — and we assume you areif you are reading this — chances are you’re engaging in some sort ofoffice Oscar pool. Now, far be it from us to tell you how to losespend your money, but we may just have a foolproof way to ensure yourfinancially sound Oscar-pooling future. This advice comes from noneother than George Clooney, who in this Time magazine articleclaims he’s never lost an Oscar pool, and then generously opens hisballot to the world. (Of course he doesn’t say how long he’s beenpooling — this could be his first year, who knows? — but it’s a nicegesture nonetheless).
I met George once, at a panel for a screening of his (quite excellent) movie, Good Night, and Good Luck, and he struck me as a pretty shrewd dude. (He also makes a point of predicting a shutout for his own Michael Clayton, pictured, which I take as a sign of levelheadedness.) For thisreason alone, I’m inclined to believe him when he says that MarionCotillard will win Best Actress for La Vie en Rose, even though I’m gunning for Julie Christie in Away From Her. Still, other Academy voters and some of our own Oscar odds experts might beg to differ with Clooney’s choices.
How about you, PopWatchers? You inclined to do a last-minute switcheroo, or do you think George is full of hot air?

I’m not in an offc pool, but I go along w/ Clooney. it’s going to be an upset, Marion over Julie.
Man I saw Michael Clayton yesterday at the best invention ever called the dollar theater and it was pretty boring BUT less boring than There Will Be Blood, Atonement or No Country…so I kinda hope it wins best picture. Well, I really hope Juno wins but I’m PREEEEETTY sure that’s not happening.
I’m really rooting for Julie Christie. Away From Her was a poignant, romantic, but difficult movie to watch. It was devastating and beautiful at the same time, much like Julie’s performance.
Why is everyone thinking Marion will pull a fast one and defeat Julie? I hope that’s not the case.
No Country has already won awards from the writers, actors, producers, and directors. So unless the key grips and lighting guys get together, I’m going with my favorite movie of the year winning best picture two years in a row. Knock on wood.
Sorry George, but if Daniel Day-Lewis is in a film, he gets the award. No questions. It’s in his contract.
The second time he says “Daniel Day Lewis”, he clearly MEANT “Julie Christie”. You can see in the pictures beneath that he predicted she’d beat Marion.
I’d rather see Cotillard on stage than Christie, Julie’s already got an Oscar anyway (from the silent era, I believe) in a stunning performance opposite Louise Brooks and a teenaged Clark Gable.
Thank you, Angela; I was wondering if I was the only person who thought that he clearly picked Julie Christie for the win. Either way, I am still picking Christie for the win.
LOL, Oscars 2008 Spoof:

i totally agree wiht him. i think Marion will come out on top!! one can only hope!
I couldn’t find a designated area for this: Karen Allen should have been mentioned in the 100 biggest Oscar snubs (for Raiders of the Lost Ark). She’s about the coolest bartender that has ever graced the Silver Screen. So cool that they have brought her back for the sequel. Chicks in action flicks are usually just a nice a** and a smile, but she is so much more. Man what a memorable role!
Yeah, I also think that Marion is gonna pull a Sofia Loren and is going to win….
What Julie Christie are you talking about? The silent era?? Clark Gable?? She’s only 60 something. Her academy award was in 1965. Clark Gable was dead by that time.
What the….
Julie Chrisy…Omara Shriff…these KIDS don’t know her because there just to young!!! She will take the Oscar…bet on that!!!
I like George’s picks…I am not certain about Best Actress or Supporting Actress – I feel those are the least predictable this year, but the others are exactly what I would choose as the winners…and I think they’re good ones and deserving…as much as I loved Sweeney Todd, I guess I was the only one who saw it…
I just hope the winners clue in that we don’t want to hear their laundry list of thank-yous. ‘Thank you to my director, my cast, my crew, my mom and dad, my cat, my hairdresser’, ad nauseaum. Give us a short and sweet speech that we can chew on! UGH.
I love George, but honestly, I’m not that bothered about who wins. Getting nominated is a huge honor already, and the fashion and glamour is the best part of the show for me.

I really hope Marion Cotillard wins Best Actress. I’m sure the ones who can’t understand why/how she would win over Julie Christie are the ones who have not see La Vie en Rose. Her performance is amazing. You see no trace of anyone but Edith Piaf on the screen. GO MARION!!!

Exactly Truman! For those of us who have seen LA VIE EN ROSE, there’s not other choice but Marion Cotillard for Best Actress. She was truly sensation. I too was impressed with Julie Christie’s nuanced performance in AWAY FROM HER, but there’s just no competition. For two hours, Cotillard WAS Edith Piaf.
Atonement was honestly god-awful in my opinion – and the other movies (except Juno) are so dark. Michael Clayton was actually my fav movie from 2007 so I hope it sweeps (though i think the shutout is a correct prediction).
