Snap Judgment; 'Knight Rider'

Knightrider_lConfession: I was not a huge fan of the original Knight Rider. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, was mostly indifferent to its gimmicky charms. So I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the updated version via last night’s NBC movie/backdoor pilot. Reasonably good FX, good chase ‘n’ crash action, solid-if-familiar sci-fi plotting, decent supporting players — Sydney Tamiia Poitier as a lesbian FBI agent (uh… okay) and the reliable Bruce Davison as the slightly crackpot inventor. I especially liked Val Kilmer as the voice of KITT; no disrespect to Will Arnett, who might have brought a hostile, ironic edge to the talking car, but Kilmer brought the kind of nonchalant cool he used to toss off effortlessly in such movies as True Romance and Tombstone. (Certainly an improvement over the snippy, nervous-Nellie voice of William Daniels in the original.)

Lone drawback was driver Justin Bruening (right), who seems like a yapping puppy next to David Hasselhoff (especially during the Hoff’s cameo, performed without a trace of irony, which turned out to be a good thing in context). Still, he and Deanna Russo (left, as Davison’s supposedly brilliant daughter) have good chemistry with each other — and with the car, to which both human leads definitely take a back seat.

What did you think? As good as, better than, or worse than the original? Were you annoyed or amused by the relentless product placement? Are you looking forward to further adventures with this whole KITT and kaboodle?

I thought the entire movie was one giant Ford commercial…between the actual Ford commercials on the breaks and then every car on the road during the chase sequences were either Ford’s or Ford owned companies (Land Rover, Volvo). I understand that they are a sponsor and paying some of the bills but COME ON!!!! Also, I thought the acting was HORRIBLE. The special effects with KITT were good b ut other than that the movie had a feel like it was thrown together at the last minute and had a very cheap feel to it. The storyline felt rushed. If this is any indication of how the show would be, NBC needs to just cancel it now before they have another Bionic Woman on their hands!!!!

You nailed it Mikey G. This thing was horrific. If I didn’t like Mustangs, I wouldn’t have made it past the first 10 minutes. The only non Ford product on the road is the Yukon that gets destroyed. This trend that I first noticed on 24 a few years back has got to stop. NBC…please get you act together. Between this and Bionic Woman, you’ve got two shows that didn’t deserve to be on the Sci-Fi channel, let alone major network. television. Why waste the first half hour introducing me to completely unlikeable characters? Total waste.

  • Emma

Yeah, I agree with pretty much everything Mikey G said. That was crap. Susman, I don’t know what show you were watching but that was some of the worst acting I’ve seen in a long time. The dialogue was terrible! I sincerely hope that NBC doesn’t decide to make this show into a series. I know I won’t be watching…

I actually liked the show. It was a guilty pleasure (more because I like American muscle cars) than anything. I did count the Ford commercials, but hey, Transformers was a giant add for GM, why can’t Ford have one? Some characters seemed lame, but if given the chance, they could make a go at it. I loved Val Kilmer as KITT. He has the voice… Honestly, I would watch this TV show, if only to remember what I loved about the original… hokey sci-fi, cool cars, and chase scenes.

  • FunkyRedrum

This show was okay. Nothing to write home about but I did love Val Kilmer as KITT. Loved that part. Bruce Davison was good while the others not so much. May watch it again if I have nothing else to do but will not seek it out.

I liked the show – in a pre-pubescent googly-eyed girl way. Definitely deserves a few more watchings. Oh yeah – Val Kilmer rules!

I left it on after “American Gladiators” thinking, “Okay, buddy, you’ve got ten minutes”. Which turned into fifteen. Which turned into an hour.
It wasn’t compelling enough to make me watch the whole thing, but I was surprised at how bad it -wasn’t-. I fully agree that Val Kilmer made the show–he and the writers brought a kind of “Terminator” humor to it, consistently ironic and sometimes even funny. No one else really impressed me…at all…but Kilmer was a joy to watch. Er, listen to.

I liked it, surprisingly. If/when it becomes a primetime show I’ll definately watch it. However I have to disagree and say I think Will Arnett would’ve been a better choice for the role. Val Kilmer was too monotone, and i know a robot is supposed to be, but if it’s gonna be talking the entire show it should have some sort of personality. And while I think the two leads had good chemistry, the acting of Deana Russo whenever she was scared or trying to be witty was mostly terrible. And the addition of the lesbian FBI agent was…interesting. I wanna see how that plays out. At least she won’t be falling for the nerdy friend like so many other shows would do. The tough FBI agent falls for the geeky, not so attractive friend is overdone. And at least we finally have another main gay character on TV! Overall I thought it was done very well and I can’t wait to see how it translates to a TV show!

I too was not a fan of the original Knight Rider, but was surprisingly entertained by the updated take on this classic.
I think Justin Breuning is the perfect choice for the Hoff’s son – give him a chance folks. I think he and the show deserve a couple more eps before we bang the gavel and pass judgement.

Meh. I didn’t think it was god-awful. It was kind of lame. That whole Blackriver-private-security-firm-seeking-to-take-over-the-world thing was silly. But, the whole show was silly. I did enjoy Val Kilmer as the voice of KITT. I, too, was not a huge fan of the show. I only watched because I loved Justin Bruenning on All My Children. Sorry, kids, but I don’t think he was that bad. In comparison to the rest of the movie, he did OK. It has potential to not suck, but so did Bionic Woman. If they make it into a series, I’ll give it a shot, if only to look at Jamie, er, Justin again. Mmm, eye candy.

I thought it was a pretty cool show! Yes, the product placement was overkill, but I don’t think it detracted too much from the action and fun. I think it was a success because it really brought out the “coolness” of KITT and had lots of adrenaline-pumped sequences. In comparison, Bionic Woman focused more on the human and emotional aspects of the characters’ experiences and less on the wow-factor of sci-fi technologies. While the human connection is necessary to keep the show relevant, too much of it (especially with mediocre acting) causes it to lose the entertainment. Last night’s Knight Rider was simply fun to watch. I will keep watching it as long as the producers maintains it as an “action tv show”.

  • Adrienne

The pacing felt a little rushed, but other than that I liked the show. I loved Val Kilmer as the voice for KITT. Yes, there was a lot of advertising for Ford, but who doesn’t want a Shelby GT 500 KR Mustang now???

  • heisthelamb

The more I think about it, the less I can see Will Arnet doing a good job as the voice of KITT. I think they got lucky to have Val step in so quickly and nail it. Other than that, the sunday night “movie” should stay just that. The whole lesbian-introduction scene was obviously only put in there to attract the male viewers that were only going to watch the first “10 minutes”

  • Sharon

Not sure my son grew up thinking KITT was real, and last night the first half hour all we did see was KITT doing its thing driving around. The car does look cool.

Can’t this country write and produce something original for once ?
It’s jus Mr. Big playing ” product placement ” trying to sell stinkin’ Ford crap !
This show sucked in the 80’s , and guess what ~ it probably sucks even more now I’m sure !

  • gringo101

C’mon people….Why everyone so negative about Fords…No I dont like them, but it’s a TV show..Let it go…The acting wasnt Oscar worthy, but definately not crap either. I hope the show will go on, just give them some space to explore the characters, and storyline.

  • TheOtherOne

While I didn’t hate the show, I thought the “stalker KITT” ads were far more striking. I *hated* the first one, but they grew on me.

  • Henry

I thought it was terrible and somewhat predictable, though there were times I thought that about the original series, which I admit I did like. The whole thing seemed like an elogated car commercial for the Mustang and beyond the nanotechnology skin and the camouflage changing colors… well that was it? Where’s the classic “Turbo Boost” capability? The oil slicks and gaseous plumes to blind enemies? Frankly, the plot just took too long to get going and even when it did, it ended too patly. I was admittedly disappointed.

  • Greg

Did any one else think there were way to many commercial breaks??? i mean i actually timed it at one point we had 5 minutes of movie then 3-4 minutes of commercials. For a movie that was a big commercial to begin with!!!! Come on NBC there has to be a better way to pay the bills.

  • classicw

As campy nostalgic fun, this wasn’t bad. I liked the Shelby Cobra. While Val’s KITT was somewhat monotone, if K.R. gets picked up, I guess that leaves room for KITT’s character to grow (shades of Data?). I liked the update to the mobile transport plane; allows for a more global setting. (Though how inconspicuous would Mike “the spy” be driving around in a VERY memorable car?)
    Two complaints:
    1) the pacing annoyed me. The walking/driving/stalking minutes should have been trimmed. Felt these drug on so they could cut to a break. After trimming, devote the extra time to scenes between the “parents.” Let’s get to know Mike’s mom so that we are upset by her death. As it was, hardly mattered at all.
2)Hated Stupid FBI agent. Her opening scene told us she’s both gay (O.K.) and a reckless/careless person, which she proved by putting cell call on speaker phone. DUMB! If series gets picked up, she should become the first “tragic death that leads Mike on a dark mission of revenge.”

  • Ra

I was really impressed, although I might be a bit biased as I own a mustang. I’ll definitely tune in again, liked the show, hated when during the credits they reminded me that the “Hoff” is on America’s Got Talent… Bleh! If Knight Rider goes to series, I’ll definitely watch, it beats half the junk that’s on tv now.

  • Mike

    Totally didn’t suck.

  • B.I.H.

I thought it was a little lame and that it could only get better. The acting was not strong at all nor was the writing but the high points were Bruce davison and Val Kilmer (not a bad replacement for Will Arnett). Nothing about it made me jump for joy but I was happy to see the Hoff in the end, if only for 1 minute.

I was a huge Knight Rider Fanatic back in the day. . . I was a teenager and wanted to grow up to marry Michael Knight. Well, those days are long gone. LOL
I loved the Mustang as KITT, but I agree that there were waaayyyy too many Fords in this show. The only car to be made by a GM was the SUV the bad guys destroyed by running into KITT.
Val Kilmer played KITT like he played Iceman, with no emotion. Really, KITT is not the same without William Daniels. What made Knight Rider fun was the playful banter between Michael and KITT, and I want more of that. Val Kilmer was too robotic to play a robot voice.
I want to understand the backstory and how it ties into the 80’s version. Who the heck is this Jenny and why did Michael send her and little Mikey off and become a deadbeat? And who is this guy who supposedly built KITT–I thought Bonnie did originally. My husband is really bothered by KITT’s sensor. He says that it looks more like KARR’s sensor than KITT’s.
