The next 'Star Wars' movie: This summer's 'Clone Wars'

Clonewars_lYes, Virginia, there will be a seventh Star Wars movie in theaters this summer. Call it Star Wars: Episode 2 1/2. Actually, it’s called Star Wars: The Clone Wars (opens Aug. 15), and it’s a feature length animated prologue to the all-CGI series coming this fall on Cartoon Network and TNT. USA Today has some first-look photos and info, and starwars.com has a promotional video with lots of footage. Most interesting addition to the saga, which fills in the plot gaps between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, is that Anakin Skywalker has his own padawan, a young apprentice Jedi named Ahsoka who’s a girl. (A girl who wields a mean, green lightsaber, not a "Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo" girl.) Alas, Anakin himself still seems kinda two-dimensional, though this time he’s got a really good excuse. And the animation looks pretty cool.

Show of hands: Who’s psyched? Who’s disappointed? Who’s yawning?

Is this from the same people who did the Clone War shorts that were on CN a few years ago? Those were actually the best written and best acted part in all the prequels.

  • Zod

I’m totally stoked for this. Any Star Wars, no matter how bad it may be, is still good.

  • Auriana

I’m giddy with excitement over this. Granted, I would have preferred that they kept the 2d animation they used for the Clone Wars cartoons, but that’s just a personal preference. I’d be there even if it was Star Wars as done on an Etch a Sketch.

Who’s thinking that these characters look a LOT like Lord Farkwad from the Shrek movies?
Not to nitpick, but Cartoon Network already did an series of serialized cartoons called “the Clone Wars”. It also took place between episodes II and III and the last episode of that series ends at nearly the same point where Episode III begins. This feels suspiciously like “Beauty and the Beast II”, an unneeded pseudo sequel.
IMHO, the untold Star Wars stories that we yearn for are the years between Episodes III and IV (allegedly there’ll be a live action show for this), and to see how the universe unfolds after Episode VI.
The Marvel Comics Star Wars series brought up a lot of interesting issues not resolved by episode VI, like reconciliation, a new Senate, Imperial royal families, small remaining Imperial fleets, etc, that need to be brought to a screen.

i can’t agree that anything bad that is star wars is still good. the prequels were just not good. and i’m a big fan of star wars. this animation looks pretty crummy actually, and it’s not hard to believe that anakin is still a 2-D character. the clone wars cartoon was a lot better than the “first” three episodes, but still. that didn’t even come close to making up for the atrocity that was episodes I-III

I thought the short animated pieces they did for Clone Wars a couple of years ago were great, so hopefully this new (apparently completely different) version lives up to those.

This is a different team than the one that did the Clone Wars micro-series a couple years back. (That was done by CN; this new series is being done directly by Lucasfilm.) I don’t know where exactly the new Clone Wars fits between movies II and III, although I’m pretty sure it’s not a continuation of the micro-series — since that became a direct prequel to the start of Revenge of the Sith. Good news is the director is from Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of the best animated (and anime-inspired) action shows to ever hit the air.

‘Good news is the director is from Avatar: The Last Airbender’. Allright, I’m in then.

  • Ben

Agree with the consensus: Looks too close/inferior to the CN animated shorts.

    I Will kneel before Zod!!!

  • Rich

Did Lucas write or direct any of these cartoons? No? Then count me psyched.

  • Joey Jo Jo

Is it safe to say that since we didn’t see Asokha in Revenge of the Sith, it probably means she dies in this installment.

  • Rebecca

I’m assuming they’re re-casting voice actors, that is, that Ewan McGregor etc. aren’t coming back do the voices? (I mean really, why would they?)

  • Fredd

The CN Clone Wars mini series was superior to any of the I-III episodes. It’s too bad that a movie isn’t being made with that group of animators and writers. Let’s hope this one at least has a decent script and no lame dialogue!

  • Snarf

    Who cares?

  • Starship

This is a total YAWN for me. I’m star warsed out man. Color me waiting for the new Star Trek movie.

Now that 1-6 are done i really don’t care. It just seems there putting out other things just so no one forgets about Star Wars. I won’t go out of my way to see this but if i see it on T.V. fine but i won’t expect much.

  • Glenn

If any original Star Wars “viewers” remember, were there supposed to be 9 chapters in the trilogy? It was originially a 3×3? He started in the middle! You must be at leas 25 years old to remember this! Any cyber comic will suck!

  • black mass

I thought it was 12 chapters, and I love all the starwars films, but, the animation on both the 2D and 3D is not that popping to the eye

  • sadie

WHERE IS REVAN TIME TO MOVE ON WHICH STAR WARS

  • Cory Morr

As soon as I read the headline and said,”another “Star Wars” movie on the way,” I was assuming they were talking about STAR WARS: Episode 7. But looking foward to Clone Wars anyway.

  • Cory Morr

I think Star Wars is going to financially do poorly on tv, unless a Star Wars: Episode 7,8,9 made. Star Wars was always ment for the big screen. 6 is just an evil number.

  • Cory Morr

The live-action Star Wars tv series due out next year, fall 2009 will be
“STAR WARS: REBEL ALLIANCE” set during after Episode III-Revenge of the Sith but before the events of Episode IV-A New Hope and the Classic Trilogy.

  • Cory Morr

I can assure you fan…you won’t be disappointed or discouraged.

NDZ MOAR SEXY TWI’LEK BABES. K THX BAI :D And, I feel that the series done by Silent Bob was pretty bad ass, why can’t Hollyweird do anything in 2D animation anymoar? @_@
