Half the fun of American Idol is in seeing a pharmacy clerk like Elliott Yamin or an auto-service rep like Chris Daughtry break out of a life of working-class anonymity and get a chance at record deal. Which is exactly why MTV’s idea for Rock the Cradle, in which children of celebrities will compete for music stardom, is so utterly unappealing.
Come on, MTV! No one wants to watch a show in which rich, privileged young people get help from a large corporate conglomerate in making all their dreams come true. (Unless one of those young people is Blanket Jackson.)
So step away from Rumer Willis, James Garfunkel, and Bobbi Kristina Brown. We’d rather you miss out on the next Jakob Dylan or Wilson Phillips than risk creating another Nicole Richie or Kim Kardashian 2.0.
You may, however, return a certain Billy Idol video to your rotation. Rock the cradle of love…yes the cradle of love… don’t rock easily, it’s true…

The mouth-breathers in charge of programming at MTV are truly brain-damaged. Literally everything MTV does is jaw-droppingly stupid or ill-conceived.
MTV needs to go back to videos. This is a stupid idea, but you know SOMEBODY will be watching.
Yuck. Even worse you know this will come to pass. And be a hit. Double yuck.
Some of these children do have talent. Stings son’s band is not that bad but this show sounds boring. I could care less about about Harper Simon competing to be a new music artist. Bring back the music videos!
Slezak, I would definitely watch for Blanket Jackson!
I gotta join the chorus of people rolling my eyes at you, MTV. What are you thinking? I like that the New York Post article mentioned “Rich Girls” because that was such a horrible show. Remember when someone had the brilliant idea of putting a bunch of celeb kids on a ranch to do work? No? Probably because no one wants to watch the kids of celebs do much of anything, other than embarrass themselves as they drunkenly crawl out of clubs at like 2 in the morning or get arrested for drunk driving. If they really had talent, they’d already have record deals. Did anyone really watch that other Idol rip-off show where Perez Hilton and one of Hef’s girlfriends rapped? Learn from your mistakes and please don’t subject us to this crap.
Slezak’s just mad because his singing voice made those pictured babies cry.

Gunnar and Matthew Nelson anyone?
I need to poop.
What a stupid idea. MTV blows!!!!
and the sequel to this show will feature the parents of celebrities…it’s called “Rock the Casket”
What losers will they get to judge them!
What about Lennon’s kid Sean & Harrison’s kid Dhani and Ringo’s kid Zak?
What about Lennon’s kid Sean & Harrison’s kid Dhani and Ringo’s kid Zak?
Actually, this is the most genius idea MTV has decided to air in years! The exact reason this show makes sense is because there is a common misconception that these kids are all “rich & priveledged.” This is simply not true. The rich & priveledged ones are just the ones that have been on tv so far. If you are following in your parent’s footsteps, imagine the comparisons that would be made. Now imagine your parent is a famous rock star! Trying to step out from this kind of shadow is NOT a blessing. It is a curse. This particular group of celebrity kids are real people that everyone will relate to. MTV is out to prove the stereotype wrong. These kids are talented and want to grab fame in their own rite. I hope they show behind the scenes stuff! I hear that MTV is really trying to change their programming and I personally think this is the show to do it.
