Who should replace Montel?

Montel_lWord just got out that The Montel Williams Show is being canceled after 17 years, prompting a stunned nation to ask, “Wait — Montel Williams is still on the air?!” Seriously, though, an unscripted talk show got the ax in the middle of an intractable writer’s strike — that’s just harsh.

Here’s a more vexing question: Who deserves to take Montel’s spot in the daytime-talk pantheon? Personally, I’m thinking it would be great to shake things up with a less obvious candidate. Bear with me here. I’m getting an image of Gabriel Byrne teasing out guests’ innermost feelings with an endless array of intelligent, probing questions — but maybe that’s just because I was totally riveted by his performance on In Treatment last night. (I missed Monday’s and Tuesday’s eps, though, so I can’t speak to Annie’s complaints.) Or how about Daniel Day-Lewis? His Ledger-related breakdown on Oprah last week showed he’s got empathy to spare in a talk-show format, and we know he’d really sink himself into any part he takes.

Perhaps these are unrealistic choices. Okay, they definitely are — and the fact that I can’t remember the last time I was able to watch a syndicated daytime talk show all the way through is showing. Any of you PopWatchers have any brighter ideas, preferably not involving majorly intense actors from the British Isles?

I wonder if Sylvia Brown saw this one coming!

If 90% of the daytime shows were cancelled and replaced by vapid commercials, I think we’d all still be better off. Nobody needs to be subjected to accidentally (or purposely) absorbing any more of that DNA-testing, poor-people-screaming, bleeping, bottom-of-the-barrel trash.

Mavis- Tee Hee! I was just thinking how the heck am I supposed to get my Sylvia Browne fix now?!? She made my Work-at-Home-Wednesdays so much brighter :(

BrandonK, dude, you obviously don’t watch Montel. He’s a class act, man (for real, yo). Besides, if it weren’t for daytime television, how else would I have gotten this great job as a Medical Transcriptionist, got myself a lawyer after my car accident and found out how to get a new phone line after mine had been turned off for non-payment?

Rosie! Not the happy, queen of nice version, but the opinionated, Trump-baiting, Baba-Wawa trashing, lesbian we’ve all come to know and love/hate.

Mavis – LOL about Sylvia Brown. Montel was spiraling out of control, to the point where Sylvia ran the show one day a week. It was ridiculous. It turned into the “Montel Williams Pimps Syliva Brown Show.”

I think EP Sato would be the best choice. Guest hosts Furry_Tom and Ceballos, and Slezak could be the first guest!

I started watching MONTEL WILLIAMS in 1991 in Baltimore [it wasn’t picked up in the D.C. market until after the local 4 PM newscast on the CBS affiliate was canned so the news anchors could sleep in] and Sally Jessy Raphael was still going strong. I thought Montel was a capable talk show host…no Oprah for sure, but who can top her? I will miss his “inspirational hipness” and his gay pirate fashion…and Sylvia Browne Wednesdays [HACK! COUGH!] are but a distant memory.

As long as it’s NOT Wayne Brady I think I’ll be happy. Actually, if Sheri Sheppard (sp?) doesn’t get her own show, I’d be pretty happy as well.

    Thanks Anjeliki,
And I JUST got a haircut today. If I’d known I was up for replacing Montell on a guest hosting basis, I would’ve just told my barber to shave it all off.
I’ll do it if I can guest host on Thursdays…I want Fridays off so I can take off early for the weekend.
As for the topic (yes, I’ll actually address the topic) I’m afraid I don’t have that much to say. I’m pretty much a 9 to 5 stiff, so I don’t get to see Montell or many other of the daytime talk shows. However, from what I’ve read and heard it seems like Montell was one of the classier (certainly more than Springer and, probably Maury) and more capable hosts, so in that regard he’ll be missed.
As for who should replace him in real life (not in my imagination where I’m guest hosting)? I’ll follow Simon’s lead of picking outlandish people and pick an intense actor who’s not from the British Isles: Michael Madsen. You can’t tell me you wouldn’t watch a daytime show hosted by Mr. Blonde.

Who knew his show was still on?

I went to Montel Williams taping like 10 years ago. He was such a classy man and fine-as-all-get-out in person. I can’t even remember the show topic—I just remember that there was a frustrated mother on with her shiftless, trashy daughter.

ROSIE! Gotta be ROSIE! I bet the ratings would be high! People either love or hate her. I happen to think she is a highly intelligent, highly opinionated, make-you-think strong woman! We need a talk show that makes you think! Not the mindless dribble that is on TV these days.
