'Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Gauntlet III' recap: Foul play?

Tylerroadruleschallenge_lOkay, let’s get the boring stuff out of the way first: the players who were sent home last night on G3 after losing their gauntlet challenges were Angel and Tyler (pictured). I’m not too sad about either, especially because Angel was up against Jillian, and I’d much rather Jillian stick around longer so we can attempt to figure out who the heck she is once and for all. Plus, I think her love affair with Frank is sort of cute (oh, come on, you do, too).

One love affair that has the opposite effect is Beth and Nehemiah. Though I’m not so sure how much longer Beth can carry on her schoolgirl crush, seeing as Nehemiah let her have it for leading the world on to believe they had hooked up during The Duel. ("Sometimes it not what you say it’s how you say it. ‘Oh, um we didn’t hook up. Hee hee hee.’ It’s that little witch laugh that you do." God knows, we can all sympathize with Nehemiah — if I never heard that witch laugh again, it would be too soon.) I loved that during this conversation, Evan, Kenny, and Adam were just standing there forming a little audience by clapping and laughing at the appropriate times.

Besides the usual drunken hookups, there was a lot of talk last night about alliances and throwing challenges on purpose. Tori seemed like she was on some kind of witch hunt in an attempt to uncover who was aligning themselves with players on the Veterans team. She’s probably right that there is "foul play" going on (we did hear Frank tell the cameras that he wants to align himself with the guy who makes the decisions on the Veterans team, by whom I’m assuming he meant CT), but it’s a little odd that of all the finger pointing, not one has been pointed at Rookie Melinda, who is engaged to Veteran Danny.  That’s an alliance if I’ve ever heard of one!

On to a few things last night’s G3 made me wonder about:

  • How awkwardly staged was the poolside gathering when Zach — with Sidekick in hand — shouted in his most cheesy voice, "Hey guys! Guess what? We got a clue!" and the rest of the cast in unison all replied "A clue? Oh my God!"
  • Speaking of awkward: Tyler. How much were you cringing when he confessed to Ryan, "When I look at you, I just want to rub you sometimes, I don’t know I feel so comfortable around you, but I get so nervous"? (And did you notice Alex was in the pool when Tyler was talking to Casey about his crush? Way to edit the footage in order, MTV.)
  • What was up with Zach’s hairdo at the "Screw You" challenge?
  • Does Brooke actually think Evelyn was rooting for her to be protected from the gauntlet? I’m kind of hoping not.
  • Are the challenge names supposed to have some sort of sexual innuendo? There’s been "Screw You" and "Roped In," what’s next "Handcuff Me To a Bed Post and Throw Away The Key"?
  • When choosing to send Tyler into the gauntlet, Johnny explained his decision to the camera, "Me getting sent home from The Duel was one of the worst experiences of my life, and I owe it a 100 percent to Tyler," but what I want to know is: is he serious? That’s one of the worst experiences of his life? And he’s actually complaining about it? Life as a reality star is a lot harder than we though, folks.

Finally, I just want to give a shout out to Janelle for yelling at Tyler for being such a sore loser when he was voted into the gauntlet. She had a point that I think should be written on a poster somewhere in the G3 house so all of these cast members can be reminded when necessary: IT’S JUST A GAME.

Ok, PopWatchers, it’s your turn. Tell us below what you thought of last night’s episode.

There is no comment. I just wanted to say something, so you don’t think you are wasting your time. I still watch G3. Thanks Lindsay

Tyler’s sunburn is similar to Tom Coughlin (NY Giants)’s windburn from the NY/Green Bay game a couple weeks ago.

I noticed Alex in the pool too. Isn’t Beth too old to participate any more? I wish she’d retire as others in the past have done(Timmy,Mark,Eric)

  • Kate

What is up with TJ Lavin looking so gross? Jeez, shave and get a haircut.

  • indygirl

Nehemiah must have gotten alot af flak from his friends post-duel because evan if they didn’t ‘hook up’ he definatly was caught by the cameras in Beth’s bed multiple times.

the cheesy “we’ve got a clue” moment is actually an inside joke, i think. they always have to say that when the clue comes in and i’ve noticed for several seasons the cast members have been having fun with that moment, i.e. mocking it and saying it as cheesily as possible. it’s actually kind of funny, i think.

Maybe we can convince a contestant to say “Tyra Mail!” when they get a clue via the side kick…

I actually laughed outloud when after one of the events the Fresh Meat guy Evan (had to look up his name) had his hat off and he was SO going bald! Normally I don’t laugh at balding guys, its not their fault, but I’m sure someone at MTV had a heart attack when they saw that footage “Oh my God, someone looks older than 22! How did we let that happen!?!? Damnit, get me another drippy teen soap where no one is over 17″ The rest of the show I noticed how he’s always wearing a hat, and the few times he’s not, it’s because he’s providing comentary and had time to dress up and comb his hair forward. And he wonders the other day why the girls weren’t giving him any love… Sorry, when you throw yourself out there to look young and studly, I have to laugh that you’re actually hiding your premature balding.

Whats with his nose? Sunburnt or did he tie to many on the night before?

thank you for printing these recaps. i love them!!!

Zach keep wearing his hair like that and it’s driving me nuts. It’s so unflattering.
I was also applauding Janelle. Usually I don’t like her, but everything she said was spot-on.
    How bad are the rookies?!

  • Mavis

Hilarious that Johnny Bananas felt that losing to Tyler in the Duel was the worst moment of his life. It’s his fault that he thought that Tyler could lift that many watermelons! There was nothing that Tyler did but pick up a load of watermelons! Oh! The Melodrama!

  • JMC

What? No one mentioned the fact that the last thing we hear Tyler say is “I know me and Ryan will be really close.” Then cutting to Ryan laughing and saying, “Gee, glad he’s gone. That was awkward.”

  • thank you for the recap

The only way I can rationalize watching this show is if EW recaps it. Good call Lindsay about Johnny being devastated over getting kicked off The Duel. And did anyone else find it offensive when Johnny used an effeminate voice to announce they picked Tyler to go to the Gauntlet?

  • Andy

I was getting more and more disgusted as I watched yesterday’s The Real World/Road Rules Challenge. I couldn’t believe how they were treating Tyler, especially his so-called friends. The people that were the biggest jerks to him were his fellow housemates from his season and his the other guy he said he felt a connection with romantically. Even though I sort of understood why Johnny was unhappy, he went way too far in the way he made fun of Tyler when he chose him. And then you have the ugly winch Janelle chiming in when Tyler is simply telling them that they hurt his feelings. That winch butts in telling him ‘its just a game’ when that’s really what she should be telling Johnny because he is the one who took it personal the way he made fun of Tyler. I was hoping Tyler would bodyslam Janelle. And don’t even get me started on two-faced Ryan who talks smack about people who are sweet to him behind their backs. Wow, what a load of jerks! Tyler should kill those three
