The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 48: That thing you said was a gift but totally wasn't edition)

Girlsjustwant_l_2Last night, Annie Barrett and I had our second conversation about the 1985 movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun, starring Helen Hunt (pictured) and Sarah Jessica Parker. At one point, she mentioned owning the DVD, and then quickly added, "It was a gift."

Really, Annie? "No. I bought it."

And that, friends, is how a PopWatch Confessional is born: When was the last time you lied to someone, telling them that a potentially embarrassing entertainment purchase had actually been a present?

You know I won’t judge. I can’t even think of an example because that is how little shame I have.

The closest example I can give is that back in 1990, I actually paid good money to see ROCKY V. Later, having felt the intolerable shame of subjecting myself to that turkey, I lied to my friends and told them that I’d gotten into the movie theater for free. They believed me.

By the way, it you want to see a real young Helen Hunt, check out the thriller ROLLERCOASTER from 1977.

I am just so happy to see Girls Just Want to Have Fun on the popwatch today. My sister and I would re-enact the final dance off with our Barbies. You know, the part where SJP turns to her partner and with all seriousness says, “Let’s do it”, and then they do the big finale tumbling pass?

  • Auriana

My hentai collection (Cool Devices, Overfiend, and some others). I get embarassed and say my fiance bought it. Also the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon dvd set.

Um, I own Girls Just Want to Have Fun too and I’ve probably used that line ni reference to that very DVD before. I think I usually pull out that line when someone sees my iPod has a few NSync ablums on it or spots my copy of the Dawson’s Creek finale on DVD.

Such a could you not lay claim to such a great movie? Its a classic! I remember several sleepovers where it was watched, I still own it on VHS, and keep meaning to pick up the DVD version. The 80s cheesefest/deliciousness has to be shared with future generations of teenage girls.
Annie and Mandi, I always thought better of you two!

  • Annie B.

In my defense, I only suggested this awesome DVD had been a gift to see if Mandi, who should know better, would call me out. And she totally did. So in a way, we both won. She wins for being smart, and I win for owning the DVD.
JenJen, YES! “Let’s. Do it.” She’s so determined! And then it’s CLEARLY her body double beyond that point, doing all the tumbling/twirling!

There is no shame in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. My group of friends and I watched it at every single sleepover we had in elementary school. DTV forever!

I’m about to do it right now…I’m a straight male (I swear) and I’ve seen this movie several times…but it’s only because it was on HBO all the time when I was a kid. No really. I swear. For serious.

  • Antoinette

I have the best lie to explain away about one third of my dvd collection: “that’s for the kids, they love it”. I have used that line to explain away “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”, “The Mummy” and its sequel” and countless others. But really the copy of “Daredevil” was my daughters choice – how can she love that crap?

  • Dtom

I feel I know need to over-compensate, now that I’ve admitted to seeing this movie several times, so here goes: it’s nice to see the fine piece that is Annie Barrett posting on her own site.

  • QueenC

Yup, no shame in owning this movie! Most of my potentially embarrassing items actually HAVE been gifts – I put them on my Xmas wishlist every year!

  • Kathleen

“Velcro. Next to the Walkman and Tab it’s the coolest invention of the 20th century.” And I did not IMDB that quote. I own it too. :)
    Auriana – there’s a D&D cartoon set? Oh. Oh – effin’ A.

  • Robyn

I swear I was seconds away from posting the exact same Velcro quote. I LOVE THIS MOVIE.

  • Kari

I bought From Justin to Kelly for $5 at Walmart. Okay, I bought 3 From Justin to Kelly’s and sent 2 to my American Idol buddies. So, for them it WAS a gift, for me, it was a chance to watch that horrid rap scene over and over again. Oh, and I’ve watched all of the “deleted scenes.”
    This shame-spiral is pretty slippery.
