Christian Bale and other lingering celebrity crushes

Yumabop_lAfter reading over the Oscar nominations Tuesday, I think I found a glaring mistake. Christian Bale is not mentioned amongst the nominees. Surely this was an oversight. I mean, how many times can the guy get overlooked by the Academy? It simply defies logic. He was in two excellent films this year, 3:10 to Yuma (pictured) and Rescue Dawn, and yet again, he’s received no Oscar nods. Did the Academy just not happen to catch either of those flicks? Or do they have some sort of unwritten agreement that he is to get dissed every single year? That’s the only explanation I’ve come up with.

Granted, I’m a little biased. Confession time: I’ve been smitten with Christian Bale since watching that amusing little Disney flick Newsies back in high school. Don’t lie, you loved it too — all that singing and dancing, not to mention Jack Kelly’s ridiculous Noo Yawk accent. I’m onto you.

My love for Christian (after 16 years, I figure we’re on a first-name basis) has lasted longer than most Hollywood marriages. Throughout his roles, whether fantastic (American Psycho) or unbelievably bad (ahem, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Velvet Goldmine), my loyalty has never wavered. Sure, watching him shrink to 120 pounds in The Machinist or wither away in Rescue Dawn made me a little nauseated, but nothing has been able to shake my admiration for the guy. It’s not just that I think he is Hottie McYummy. That goes without saying. But the man is talent personified. He transforms himself with every single role. And it’s about time he got the recognition he deserved. Are you listening, Academy members?

My indignation at this blatant snub got me thinking — I’ve had acrush on him since I was a teenager. How often do your celeb crushesfrom childhood continue as an adult? I’m certainly not jonesing forKirk Cameron, Ralph Macchio or Mark-Paul Gosselaar anymore. And I’mmore than a little embarrassed by some celeb crushes (who shall remainnameless to protect my dignity) that I had as a kid. And yet, ChristianBale has remained atop my list for more than 16 years. Unabashedly so.

So PopWatchers, I ask you — are you still harboring any celeb crushes left over from childhood… or am I the only one? Fess up.

I most definitely share your love for Mr. Bale, and as far as the Academy goes, he’s just too good for them, thus they’re jealous and trying to pretend as if he doesn’t exist. Although in my opinion they could come up with a new category “Extraordinary Performance Most Superiorly Awesome” and give Chris the statue EVERY FOLLOWING YEAR, nevermind if he has actually been in a movie that year or not. Well, this is just MY opinion…

I’m with you on the Christian front. He is also the only crush from my teens who continues to this day. It’s probably because A) he’s only become hotter and B)he’s a fantastic actor, he’s smart in interviews and let’s face it, smart is sexy. Why would I be embarrased to still love him when he does little to shame my love and devotion?

I also concur on Christian Bale. I found him completely dreamy after seeing him in Little Women and my appreciation of his talent has only grown over the years.
My tastes have definitely changed since my teen years, but I do have two lingering crushes from early childhood. When I was three, I wanted to marry either Mark Hamill or Tom Selleck. I still can’t watch Star Wars or Magnum, PI without reliving those crushes.

ditto, i guess he will have to wait until he is Hal Holbrook’s age.

I’m going to go with Ryan Gosling. I’m 21, so this may not seem like a lot, but I’ve had a crush on him for around ten years now, starting with his days on Breaker High.

Johnny Depp – since the day I first saw 21 Jump Street. So satisfying to see what a great career he has had, and that he also seems to be a perfectly respectable human being.

My very earliest crush was on Harrison Ford. (I’m in my 30’s so we’re talking maybe 20+ years ago) I still love seeing him as Han Solo, and the early Indiana Jones movies? Yum.
Other than him, I’d say Brad Pitt too…although I hated his scruffy long hair and nasty beard phase, he is absolutely gorgeous now, so that makes up for it.

I’ll cop to a little crush on Christian Bale as well. My earliest crushes? Probably Tom Selleck (gotta love that Magnum), Bruce Boxleitner, and Scott Bakula. Gods I’m getting old. For they-gotta-win-an-Oscar-at-some-point crushes, Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman (I’ll always be a Rickman girl), and Ciaran Hinds. I completely fell in love with Hinds when I saw him performing for the RSC in Stratford in 1990. All the girls swooned.
