Did CBS' 'Moonlight' finally get interesting?

Moonlight_lIn case I’m not the only one watching CBS’ vampire drama Moonlight, I’ll warn you that I’m about to talk about the plot of last Friday’s episode. Bolt now if you must…

Okay, so full disclosure: I haven’t always watched Moonlight. I intended to when it premiered last fall, but by the time I got around to it, the handful of people I knew tuning in had stopped. Then I spent a few Friday nights at home, and was too lazy to turn the channel after watching David Conrad on Ghost Whisperer, so I finally saw it. It was right around the time that Mick (Alex O’Loughlin, pictured) first discovered his ex-wife, Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon) — the vamp who sired him and whom he supposedly killed the night he saved Beth (Sophia Myles) — was possibly now a human and working as a freelance photographer. Yes, I wish Moonlight was as well written as Buffy and Angel, but who isn’t fascinated by the idea of a vamp becoming human?

After some back-and-forthing, we found out on Friday’s episode that Coraline’s "cure" is a temporary one, first used by her family and others who wanted to escape the guillotine. (We also learned that vampires were the target of the Reign of Terror.) The episode ended with Mick sampling the cure, and, after getting his ass kicked by Coraline’s brother and gorging himself on food, showing up at Beth’s boyfriend’s funeral to reveal his momentary mortality.

So, here’s my question to you folks who’ve been tuning in: Is this the start of a great story arc — Mick is human, what will it mean for his relationship with Beth, how long will it last, etc. — or a fine place to call it quits? Moonlight won the People’s Choice Award for best new drama, but we all know that means nothing — and it looks like Friday’s episode was the last one canned before the strike.

Should the show return?

    yes it should

I sure hope it does! Your right, Moonlight ended what will turn out to be S1 at a good place to finish but I recall Buffy S3 also ended at a good place to call it quits – luckily they went on for another 4 seasons. Heres hoping….

Only seen it once. Wasn’t so great, but I think there are a lot of people out there who wait for a show to come out on DVD before they’ll bother with it. That’s when I’ll consider watching. By the way, what happened to New Amsterdam? Was it ready to roll before the strike? It was supposed to be a mid-season replacement, right?

  • Mick is one sexy vamp!

I sure hope it continues. I’ve caught up on my missed episodes during the strike re-runs. Now I’m hoping for more!

Sure, bring it back — if only for more Jason Dohring (nice that they introduced a character named Logan). Agree that the show has lately gotten more interesting, especially with the Coraline/Reign of Terror twist. And I’m thrilled Mick finally got the cure — finally a (too brief) reprieve from the constant whingeing about his lost humanity. Other than food and sun, remind me what the problem is?

I love Moonlight. It might not be as witty as Buffy, but it works. I dig Mick St. John & his love for Beth. I hope the show returns soon. And, of course the cure is temporary. I don’t think he’ll stay human much longer. If there were a next episode or two, he’d probably change back fairly quickly.

YES!!! I love this show! It may not be the best written show on tv, but they’ve had a lot of great story lines that are anything but cliche. I mean, Beth found out he was a vampire in the second episode, rather than dragging it out for an entire season, insulting Beth’s intelligence and the audience’s.
The actress who plays Beth described the development of the show as organic, and I think that’s worked really well for it so far. Who knows where they’ll take it, but I think they could get at least another season out of what they’ve laid out. Sure, Mick and Beth have been pretty fleshed out, but Coraline and Joseph they’ve barely scratched the surface.

Absolutely! I think it will only get better with time — as it has been doing since the first episode. I hope CBS realizes what an attraction they have in Alex O’Loughlin. He’s got the right amount of angst going for the part, and who could resist him? Ok, Beth so far, but she’ll come around….

After initially writing off a series I thought was a poor man’s Angel (and I didn’t think Angel was all that great), I have to say Moonlight has grown on me. Mick is an interesting character and I like his relationship with Beth. In fact, these last few episodes have been the best of this short season, especially the previous episode when Beth’s boyfriend was killed. I’ve never been too thrilled with the Coraline character, but with the revelation that she and her brothers are descended from the line of Louis XVI finally made her interesting. The biggest problem this series has is that it’s not doing a very good job of integrating the other supporting players (Coraline and Josef), but that can always improve if the show is given a chance to continue. I’ve gone from a skeptic to a fan. Once this writers strike ends I hope CBS has the brains to bring Moonlight back.

  • Talisker

Yeah, too right Moonlight should get another season! It is far and away the best thing CBS has right now, past or present. It just keeps getting better, and I have no doubt the supporting actors will get more to do if this strike is ever resolved.

  • margaret

Moonlight absolutely must come back! It has only been getting better since its first episode and it has a lot more story to tell.

  • Sandra Jacob

Absolutely it should continue. It’s a great show and a great love story. Many of us are hooked and love both Alex and Sophia. There are many bumps that could be worked out if it’s given a chance.[

  • Cobby

ABSOLUTELY – best show on the tube.

  • Greeneyes279

I definitely think Moonlight will return! It has to!
For Mick, I think the cure will last at least through part of the next episode. Hopefully, it will last long enough for Mick & Beth to have time together to just walk on the beach, share a meal together with some of Mick’s favorite foods (the prime rib he loved), etc. Once he turns back into a vampire, it will be harder for him because he will have an all too recent memory of being mortal and the knowledge of what he has lost for a second time will be very fresh in his mind. He might also see it as losing Beth because the eternal wall that divided them is back; she is mortal and he is immortal. I think this is more of a big issue for Mick than Beth.
Mick will work harder to find Coraline & the temporary cure as it might lead to a permanent cure. Other questions need to be answered as well. What happened to Coraline? Who was she afraid to see? What is really in the cure compound? What is it with Beth’s blood connection?

  • Michelle

YES!! It’s definitely in my top 5 tv programs and the cast is great. Alex O’Loughlin who plays Mick is one of the breakout stars of the new tv season forsure.

  • angelskeep

Moonlight just HAS to return, it is my favorite show!! The storyline is intriguing and we must find out what happens with human Mick and Beth. The amazing acting abilities of Alex O’Loughlin and Sophia Myles and their scorching onscreen chemistry is beyond addicting. Jason Dohring as Josef, with his easy, sarcastic wit is a glowing asset also. LONG LIVE MOONLIGHT!!

  • Valsadie

I ended up at “Moonlight” for the first time Friday night, too, also despite my own fall 2007 best intentions. I didn’t get to watch the whole ep so it’s interesting to hear how it turned out. I wish I’d stuck around to see Coraline! I think O’Loughlin is fantastic. I think they should bring the show back. But if it’s canceled–and someone tell Tennant this is the last time I’m gonna whine about this–will Sophia Myles move back to the UK and her ex take her back??

  • alexKatharina

I am surprised there is even a question whether or not Moonlight should come back? Of Course!!
I just find it rather amusing that this article states “I wish Moonlight was as well written as Buffy and Angel….!” Please stop comparing Moonlight to these childish shows… Moonlight is a show for grown ups that centers around the romance of Mick and Beth and the quest of a vampire to become human again… It is entertaining, fun, has action scenes and a special film noir setting which makes it a very stylish and sexy show…

  • Teresa Kennard

Yes it should return. Moonlight has gotten better with each episode and Alex O’Loughlin is a great newcomer and very entertaining.

  • Amanda

YES, Moonlight should definately return. It is one of the best shows on tv and the one that I look forward to every week.

  • pattycake

Moonlight is my favorite new show. I think Alex O’Loughlin is a tremendously talented actor. The whole cast has great chemistry on screen. I am also very moved by the music on this show. There are a lot of questions to answer and we really need a second season. Mick the Mortal? It won’t last. After all it’s a vampire show. But I love the premise and can’t wait to see where the writers go with this.

  • kaitlyn

yes moonlight should return.IT is a great show it is the best cbs has on it has so many different elements it is a wondeful show!!!!

  • Samc

Absolutely, this show should return – best thing on TV right now

  • MLA

    In a word: YES
    The show should absolutely return.
Mick and Beth are on a journey, it can’t end now! The show has been getting better and better. Sophia and Alex have amazing chemistry. Had Greenwalt stayed on the show might have been more Buffyesque, but even without him, the show still has some poignant moments, lighthearted moments and good drama.

  • fridayfan

    LONG LIVE MOONLIGHT!!!!!

  • Caryn

Yes, it absolutely should come back. The characters, actors, chemistry, music, writing, etc., is amazing! I am more hooked on this show than I ever was with “Lost” and Alex O’Laughlin is a hottie!!!
