Slezak, with the writers strike and networks needing more reality programming, your suggestion of a weekend show of extra content might actually get some notice. Use your big-time show biz connections and make it happen!
It’s been done too many times. Not original anymore. They can improve it by canceling it.
1) Have Randy judge the early stages alone and then drop out
2) Have Paula change to being a ‘behind the scenes’ mentor for the final 24
3) Bring in two young and fresh judges who are actually from the music industry of today to work with Simon who would only judge the final 24
4) Only show the top 24 onwards
5) A special to give each of the 24 one minute to say whatever they want to say about themselves. Once you get to the top 12, a few other snippets could be released about each of them.
6) Go from 24 to 12 in one fell swoop and then leave the 12 together for a few weeks singing different stuff each week. A vote to get it down to 6. Again, several weeks before voting gets it down to the top 2. Let those 2 sing three songs, one of which is chosen by Simon and the others are up to the contestant
7) Find a way to make more recent songs available to the contestant
8) Have genres but let the contestants each choose the order so they can finish with their strongest just before a vote.
1) Follow Canadian Idol’s format which is much better (they rotate judges talking, plus have allowed intruments from the get-go). 2) Keep results show to 1/2 hr only. 3) Stop the endless snipping between Ryan and Simon, boring. 4) Just get to it already, the endless audition shows are annoying, I only really start watching once they pick the top 12. Then again, I’ve been sick of AI for past couple of years, jumped the you-know-what sometime ago for me.
1. Get rid of Seacrest. 2. More mentoring, but only serious mentoring. The best episodes involve coaching with real guidance, rather than some celebrity promoting their latest release. It is more interesting when the mentors know what they are talking about, even if they are not famous. 3. Get rid of the “I’ll look like any kind of jerk to get on tv” auditions. Just show the ones who actually have an iota of talent/ability.

Stop with the gay, not gay, WHO CARES?! Stop with the controversy bull sh-t! Last year it was that ho from New Jersey, the year before it was Paula vs. Corey Clark, Frenchie, etc. Seriously, if Idol wants real ratings, do a mosh pitt night with Henry Rollins. Get friggin crazy!

I’m also with daisyj; fewer of the horrible auditions. They make my tummy hurt.
Give the final two a little more creative control when it comes to the “song” they have to sing. Oh my gawd those songs are absolute poo. Horrifying.
The only way to improve Idol is to cancel it! But that is just my opinion.

THE 1ST TWO EPPISODS OF AMERICAN IDOL WERE FUNNY WITH THE CRAP SINGERS, BUT NOW ITS OLD.
I COULD NOT BELIVE THE TALLENT THAT DANCE WARS PULLED OUT WITH IN A SHORT TIME, THERE FINAL PICK LOOKS BETTER THAN AMERICAN IDLES FINALISTS.

My suggestion would be to have a night where the contestants perform original songs. They could have a guest mentor (a la Elton John, or someone as good of a song writer but not as well known) who could help them, but they would have to be in on it too.
Only one way to improve American Idol. Add Slezak as a 4th Judge,! (M-Zak FTW, w00t!)
CHANGE THE VOTING! Rather than having us vote for our favorite, allow everyone to vote for their LEAST favorite. You wouldn’t get Sanjayas sticking for so long and Chris Daughtrys leaving so early!
Oh, YES to the Dolly night!! More country on this show in general, though I doubt many people could handle a Garth Brooks or a George Straight night. If you’re not authentic, you can’t do country, and a lot of Idol hopefuls don’t come off as genuine to me. I think the only winners that really had something different were Kelly and Taylor, but Taylor couldn’t bring it to the mainstream. Maybe he prefers it that way. Anyhow, so I guess the show shouldn’t try to encourage “odd” guys like him even if they have awesome voices, because we want to see successes in the real world post-show. So let’s not get candy-sweet singers like Jordin, even though she could really sing; let’s get a Carrie Underwood who’s marketable. I want to see the show prove itself again. And the rotating judges idea is great, because Simon’s comments are the most important, everyone knows, and they get cut off, like you said.

Dino, no. Dance wars should be just that-a dance war not the Mickey Mouse Club. The difference between SYTYCD and that is with SYTYCD you have a bunch of choreographers. Dance Wars has a few unknown choreographers for the first few episodes then it’s Bruno vs. Carrie Ann. It is a fair show but it lacks focus and sharp technique. As someone who studied dance for 17 years trust me,there is a lot more than popping, leaping, and cartwheels. Idol has to be more diverse and challenging otherwise the show should just be cancelled.
