I’m with Phil… Lite FM is basically pop without the rap/rock.
Speaking of confusion of what qualifies as what genre… our local ROCK station has been playing “Apologize” by OneRepublic (sans Timbaland) and I just do NOT get where that song remotely counts as rock.

I was listening to the Lite Pop station on satellite radio this morning and they played these 4 songs in a row:
1. Faith by George Michael
2. Before He Cheats by Carrie
Underwood
3. Forever Your Girl by Paula Abdul
4. To Where You Are by Josh Groban
Always seems to be a hodgepodge of music from different decades that isn’t rap or hard rock like other people here have said.

NO JOKE – I actually heard this song on the LITE station just this afternoon. And to admit that – it’s fessing up to the fact that I was listening. BUSTED. Anyway, the very next song was Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You,” followed by that 100 years song (or whatever it’s called) by Five for Fighting (?). Here’s my theory – once overdone by the pop stations, these singles are sent to LITE stations – so they can seem hip and cool (instert Macarena here).

I don’t think Pink “Who Knew” is light. Sure, it’s pop, but how can Pink proclaiming, “I’d stand up and punch them out” be light?

Lite FM screams “SAFE!” to me. Safe to play at work. Safe to play around children. They can have pop elements, but they’re never quite a dance song. They can have rock elements, but they’re never quite a rock out song. Also, they usually don’t offend anyone. However, they will get on people’s nerves after repeated plays.

I just think that Clear Channel should start a classic alternative,indie, and punk station. It works well on XM so it can work on FM too.

Isn’t Lite FM just Adult Contemporary renamed? Because Pink is #10 on the AC playlist chart right now with “Who Knew”

Here in Minneapolis, we have a Top 40 station which is basically all rap, then we have an adult contemporary station, a “family-friendly” current pop station, and two lite-rock/soft rock stations. I cannot tell the latter three apart most of the time, except that one of them, the “love songs” station, mostly plays 70′s stuff I’ve never heard before. Anyway I think lite or soft is basically music without explicit sexual references or profane language. If Fergie makes a song like Big Girls that doesn’t mention her humps, it’s lite, even if it also gets Top 40 and Adult Contemporary play.

Does anyone else here think the opposite is true as well – How the hell is Colbie Callat’s ‘Bubbly’ considered to be Contemporary Pop? That song screams Lite FM, yet the same station that has me grooving to Timbaland will suddenly plop me in my mother’s car with Bubbly. That song just makes me sleepy. Formats are all screwed up these days.
