I didn’t give any books this year, but I did receive “The Post-Birthday World” by Lionel Shriver and the first set of Season 8 Buffy comics. I just started “World,” but so far I like it.

I gave my 10 year-old niece The Daring book for Girls and Laika, about the Russian space dog (not a happy ending). Also gave books to my 3 month-old nephew, a Monet picture book and an Owly graphic novel (so cute).
Nothing for me and I wanted Steve Martin’s book.

Slezak, give everyone you know AM Homes amazing book “This Book Will Save Your Life”. It’s funny, smart, entertaining, and a little enlightening.
And I’ve given dozens of people Mark Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything” and it’s always a hit. It’s a hipper, better written alternative to the Joy of Cooking

My boyfriend gave me Atonement, The Uglies, Twilight (I have a deep love for YA), and a John Connolly mystery. I also bought the Persepolis yesterday with some money I received from Christmas.
I gave my boyfriend an HP Lovecraft collection, The His Dark Materials trilogy, a John Connolly mystery…
I also gave my 6-year-old nephew the first Harry Potter and my father Born Standing Up.

I got both books by Daniel Alarcón: War By Candlelight (stories) and Lost City Radio (novel). Great reads. I got my father-in-law No Country for Old Men and he, the non-reader that he is, devoured it in two days. (I think I did well with that one.)

I gave my 10 yo son the new book by Wicked author, Gregory Maguire – What the Dickens, the story of a rogue tooth fairy. Excellent book! I got the British edition of Relentless by Simon Kernick with my Amazon GC. Sometimes I just can’t wait and order the British import versions. I had no idea that we wait up to a year sometimes for new books by British authors. Now that I know, no more waiting.

I received “Some Things I Never Thought I’d Do” by Pearl Cleage – who also wrote ” What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day”. I read “Some Things” on the flight home, great diversion. Good sister-friend gift. Also received ” The Memory Keepers Daughter” – couldn’t get past the first 50 pages.

I gave my brother The Return of the Dark Knight by Frank Miller, since he is now a huge fan of graphic novels. My boss gave me a B&N gift cards, so I got The Other Boelyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory (loving it! Can’t wait for the movie) and Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan. I loved the Joy Luck Club, so I can’t wait to delve into that one.

I got tons this year that I’m excited about: The Dangerous Book for Boys is (I think) an especially good gift book. Also, How Soccer Explains the World or The Dud Avocado. Plus some Zadie Smith and The Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell.

  • Maureen

“Fire and Brimstone: The North Butte Mining Disaster of 1917″ by Michael Punke. It’s heartbreaking non-fiction that reads like a novel about one of the worst mining tragedies in U.S. history. It’s brilliantly written and, despite the rather sad subject, a great account of World War I-era America.

I gave “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, And its all Small Stuff” I am currently reading it and I am loving so far…

  • Allison

Barbara Taylor Bradford is one of my favorite modern authors so I have all her books; I got “The Ravenscar Dynasty” as a gift and just started reading it. She uses history alot in her novels. The leads in most of them are female but some do have male leads. BTB is very descriptive: settings, clothes, appearances, etc. Also, I recommend the Harry Potter series.
