I stopped making New Year’s resolutions a few years ago, mainly because I wanted to stop feeling disappointed in myself when I didn’t keep them. However, I am willing to make a 2008 pop culture resolution, if you are…
Here goes: I will always at least look to see what’s on the Discovery Channel before I watch a movie on Lifetime, WE, Oxygen, or ABC Family; I will always at least look to see what’s on the Discovery Channel after each episode in an America’s Next Top Model marathon. (I’ll miss you most of all, Tyra.)
Your turn.

ugh. I’ll do away with anything having to do with Tyra Banks in 2008. ANTM is such a scam. everything about the eliminations this season were so wrong. (I’m really not joking. Tyra–you’re jank.)
I don’t believe in resolutions, but… Everyone’s entitled to a second chance and after Jaslene won, I was willing to give ANTM one more shot. Which they squandered in the most ridiculous season of reality TV I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen many). I hereby resolve that I will never turn on Tyra again. If she won’t get off TV, I’ll keep her off mine at least.
My 2008 Pop Culture Resolutions:
- Take full advantage of my Netflix account by taking my queue seriously
- Go to the movies more …hey, I live in NYC, there’s tons of stuff playing!

Read Popwatch more often and Give new tv shows a chance before posting some crushing snark filled comment – oh who am I kidding?
I agree with all the anti-Tyra.. I stopped watch ANTM years ago… The contradicting comments to the girls are just pure crap! And bigger than anything, when was Tyra a supermodel?
My tv resolution is to quite MTV… Tila whatever her name is, is the worst show the network has ever done.. I mean really, when did it become Vh1?
I’d like to join the “I’m quitting ANTM” ranks because the judging panels have been a gigantic sham for the most part the past few cycles…
But who am I kidding? I know that I (and probably you guys) am going to catch one of those marathons on MTV one weekend, get sucked in and tune in for the new season just like we always do.
See a (good) movie at least ever other week (or every two weeks). And also I agree with the Netflix resolution from Tim. OH, and to not let my DVR pile up. I still have episodes of ‘Reaper’ and god knows what else from as late as September.
One of the New Year’s resolution that I would like to abide to pop culturally is that until the writer’s strike is over to every Thursday at 9 pm watch episodes of The Office to fill in the Jim and Pam void that is in my heart.
Also to fulfill my nostaligia of the my childhood and give American Gladiators (because names such as Fury and Venom are so awesome!).
I kept my 2007 tv new years resolutions to stop watching MTV altogether, I don’t know if this just means I’m too old to enjoy it. I also stopped watching network television all together — which was part of my resoltion, but I cheated through my computer. The tv officially became the HOME of HBO and SHOWTIME and DVD’s. While my computers, i have two now, one which became instrumental to streaming ABC.COM and CBS.COM, i don’t like the way NBC.com streams its shows so I stopped watching NBC altogether. For 2008, I promise to at least turn the tv on once a day to let it get some exercise.
1.Boycott MTV once and for all
2.Join Mandi in attemptig to watch the Discovery Channel or anything educational
3.Go to the movies more
I agree, Ceballos. No matter how bad ANTM gets, I’m still going to watch the marathons when they come around. Still, I don’t regret not watching it live anymore (especially after Jericho/Kid Nation came around in Fall 2006/2007 in its time slots).
My Resolutions:
*Indulge in more productive hobbies over TV and videogames
*Watch Discovery Channel and CNN as much as VH1
*Continue to avoid MTV and BET (even if the latter one improved its image a little)
*Catch up with seasons 1 and 2 of Battlestar Galactica before March
Continue to laugh at the demise of the view! Its pretty much dead now.
Only watch American Idol for the hollywood auditions and the top 10. Anything else is just pointless.
Give MTV a chance becuz its featuring a real world house with 5 black housemates.
I mainly have two.
1. Get a DVR. I way watch too much TV to begin with, and need to be able to tape it next year, as I’ll have waaaay too much schoolwork. Plus resolution two.
2. Find time to get into shows I always wished I had. I started watching Supernatural online 2 days ago. I plan to also watch Alias, Pushing Daisies, Jerico, The Office, etc. Which makes resolution 1 even more important.
I’m going to boycott MTV entirely, and most of vh1 (except for best week ever, because I can’t live without that show)
Im going to try to actually work at work and not check all my favorite entertainment sites at least once every hour for updates. . .lol ill do it twice when i come in and when i go home!!!
I love POPWATCH. . .BLOG!!!
1. Stop reading Popwatch when I have homework. (After that, it’s all good!)
2. Watch less TV to get homework done. I can sacrifice those two hours where I watch ANTM and Criminal Minds/Private Practice (please don’t judge me!)
3. Work more to get a DVR.
start watching the office, i know i’ll love it like everyone else
catch more reruns of gilmore girls, a great show i never got the chance to watch live
i agree.. http://www.yeah.mactanque.com
Try with all my might to not get sucked into the new season of Big Brother since I realize that I lose brain cells every time I watch.
I already gave up Project Runway this year, and don’t miss it one bit. So I, like Floridaboy, resolve to not watch American Idol until the Hollywood round. I will also get the DVDs to find out what the big deal is about Buffy. I’ll probably love it.
Sorry, but I can’t promise to give up ANTM, since I know I’ll watch it, but I do acknowledge that this means I need help. Maybe the fact that I’m moving in with my boyfriend will shame me out of it. Or maybe I’ll get him his own Tivo….
My resolutions go this way :
- I won’t let my DVR pile up, like Matthew. I still have many hours of perfectly good TV to watch from this fall (although it may come in handy with the strike looming closer…)
- I’ll watch great TV shows that I never got around to, like Lost, Gilmore Girls and oh, there are too many !
- Go to the movies more, or at least, choose my movies better !
That’s about it. I will keep on reading Popwatch, of course !!
I live in a rural part of ‘flyover state’ and my rabbit-earred TV only picks-up a 1/2 dozen (distant) local stations, on a good day. On weekday afternoons at a certain hour, all I get are infomercials, Tyra and TeleTubbies. Guess what? You couldn’t pay to me to watch Tyra – even the Tubbies have triple her IQ.
I resolve to watch and support more quality network programming. Quality entertainment like ” J O U R N E Y M A N “
I resolve to:
- Watch only TV shows that actually have some value(entertainment or educational wise, that is) rather than just watch whatever’s on. I shall start, just as others have resolved, with ANTM – which I spend most of the time criticising when I am watching it anyway.
- Allocate a set time of day to Popwatch time, so I can get some work down and keep the house clean.
- Watch what I’ve recorded. If it was good enough to record in the first place, I owe it to myself to watch.
As with all resolutions, I suspect these will last for about a week and a half before I go back to my bad practices of the past.
I will watch all my TV shows I have DVR’d, bought on DVD, videotaped on the VCR on my second TV set. But I will not watch online TV until the strike is settled.
I have kept my resolution from last year not to miss an episode of Criminal Minds or Ugly Betty, so I think I can keep this one, too. The strike forcing new episodes off the air seems to be helping.
I also resolve not to feel guilty about not watching Heroes and Lost, making my friends spend hours trying to convince me to admit myself to the nearest psychiatric hospital. I just don’t get it.
I will quit watching shows just because I can’t reach the remote.
I hereby resolve to watch LESS television and read more books. I am down to three must-see shows (Earl, Office, and Bones) so it shouldn’t be too hard. Second, I need to stop _watching_ all those home improvement shows and start actually improving my home. Doable? Yes! Happy New Year everybody!
I promise to read more books in 2008, the number to beat is 3, shouldn’t be too hard. I also plan to boycott all DVDs by Paramount and Universal until they switch to Blu-Ray.
