To Care or Not to Care: Madonna the director

Madonna_lMadonna’s directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, will premiere at February’s Berlin Film Festival. Apparently, it’s a "low-budget music-based comedy" that stars Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I). Are you jonesin’ to see what she’s capable of doing behind the camera? The woman’s never lacked vision. Or is your level of enthusiasm limp? (Maybe some folks, like those who starred in The Next Best Thing, shouldn’t be calling the shots on a movie set…)

And while we’re on the subject of Madonna and movies: Am I the only one who kinda liked Who’s That Girl, which was released 20 years ago?

I love who’s that girl one of the best 80s movies

I’m curious to read about it. Can’t say I’m rushing to see it. Why doesn’t she start by directing her own videos? As for who’s that girl and her acting, she’s not THAT bad… and Who’s That Girl had some funny bits and killer soundtrack. Madonna did screwball comedy pretty well.

    You are NOT alone, Mandi..
    (deep breath)
i, too, kinda liked ‘Who’s That Girl’..
Granted, i was 10 years old at the time, but i was also a big fan of its predecessors (‘Mother’ and ‘Grandmother’, respectively) ‘What’s Up, Doc’ and ‘Bringing Up Baby’..

‘Who’s That Girl’ was a sleep-over staple, along with ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.’ Good times, good times. It was one of my favorite cassette tapes to play and I even helped my lil’ sister choreograph a dance to the title song for her school’s talent show.

They’ve been playing “Who’s that girl” on HBO recently, my nephew left the room, my nieces already know quotes from it. “No one shushes Nikki Finn!”

    “Who’s there?”
“Aw, don’t cry, we’ll take the apartment!”

Who’s that Girl was pure campy fun but not a fantastic film. As a children’s librarian I thought that her books were drab so I can’t imagine what she can do as a director.

Word! I’m glad to see all the Who’s That Girl love! I loved loved loved that movie when I was a kid. I rewatched it a few months ago and while yes, it was quite cheesy, it was still a lot of fun. Madonna seemed like she was having fun with the character, which was great to see. I also heart the soundtrack.

Yeah, “Who’s that girl” IS pretty watchable (and quotable to this day)…
And though I risk taking it too far, you know, I’m gonna go for it. “Swept Away”. I enjoyed it. Not a great film, but also not the disaster people paint it out to be.

Ah, my secret shame: “Who’s That Girl” has always made me laugh. I mean, it’s no “What’s Up, Doc?” but it’s pretty hilarious. (And yes, I did make people sing “What the World Needs Now” at my wedding, but it was COINCIDENCE, I tell you!)

    Who’s that girl was awesome!
I love, love, love her character and thought she and Griffin Dune had great chemistry.
    “What’s the patient’s name?”
    “what’s the last name?”
I crack up every time I remember that line.

My shame is shared here for the world to read. My younger brother and I watched that movie so many times we ruined the tape. Griffin’s ear always weirded us out, but other than that…It doesn’t get any better or cheesier. Sean Penn’s getting divorced, Madonna’s a directing mother of 3, and I’m old! I hope she at least gets a fair shot before folks start shooting it down, although I must admit if I do watch it, it will be on dvd.

I even have the poster for Who’s That Girl, that’s how much I love it. It puts you in a good mood instantly.
    Knock Knock
    Who’s there?
    Olive Who?
    Olive-you, Nikki Finn!

You know Ceballos, I agree about Swept Away… it was nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. The Next Best Thing was a horrible, piece of trash. Therfore, I would like to have a vote on what was Madonna’s worst performance/film… I am nominated The Next Best Thing (both categories)

  • Larry

I loved Who’s That Girl because it was one of the first times I saw guy on guy action (at the very end with the detectives) and was my porn at age 8. Thank U Maddie for at least that.
