Videogamers: Any one of you excited about 'Final Fantasy XIII'?

That small (and seemingly ever-shrinking) segment of ‘gamers who still play RPGs might enjoy this extended preview clip of Final Fantasy XIII that features a lot more footage than was previously seen in the E3 2006 trailer. Me? I’m not sure what to make of this — there’s simply too much going on (making it hard to separate the in-game footage from the cut scenes). And I’m sorry to see that the developers can’t seem to get over their fixation with Jennifer Aniston-esque character designs. Or sticking them with impossibly large and unwieldy weapons. (I love the series, but perhaps it’s time for a major re-boot.)  Right now, I’m not so sure I want to play the game (when it finally makes it to our shores some time, well, after March 2008). Of course, I may be singing a different tune in a few months…

Sooo, any RPG fans out there? What recent titles have rocked your world? And if you were once a fan of the genre, why did you stop playing?

Final Fantasy games are still the best games on the market. From well- written stories (typically following all the steps of Campbell’s Hero’s Journey) to well-developed characters, it is hard not to care about the characters. I always say these games are not for gamers who just want to relive a movie or blow something up. These games are for people that want to be taken in by a world, like one would with a great book. By the end of a good FF game, it is that feeling exactly, of a book closing on a well-told tale. No other RPG or video game series comes close to what they accomplish with each FF game.

I think alot of people like the free roaming of the Rock Star games, as well as the first person shooters, that it is hard to pick up an RPG game unless it comes with an awesome story(FFVII).

  • Auriana

Giddy, giddy, giddy, giddy…::cough:: anyways…I’m buying a PS3 almost for the sole purpose of this game and XIII Versus. However, I’m still more of a fan of the more medieval fantasy looking FFs (XII, IX, VI and IV, not to mention Tactics…VII is actually my least favorite of all the games and I’m not going to dignify Mystic Quest), but this still looks amazing. RPGs are really the only games I play. I mean, I also love RTS and some action titles, but I can honestly say about 80% of my game collection are RPGs. This is the one and only reason I don’t have a 360, though Eternal Sonata has me tempted. As for recent games that I love, Odin Sphere is beautiful and I’ve been cursing at Revenant Wings.

Thanks to GTA, the RPG format is not dead, it’s just evolved into games that allow real time action, and the ability to skip through pointless dialogue by pressing start or X.
Now many action games feature open ended gameplay with story missions and optional mini missions (like Hulk Ultimate Destruction).
So now we get all the fun of the RPG format without the forced lame dialogue Square’s games force us to sit through (Front Mission, I’m looking in your direction).
In terms of getting the RPG formula right, I feel as if GTA has done this the best. However, the Xbox 360’s Mass Effect has impressed me with its highly addictive gameplay, fascinating (and somewhat adult oriented) plot, and with its highly adaptable characters.
The traditional RPG format made sense in the days of NES or 16 bit, but nowadays we want real time action, not turn based lameness (again, Front Mission IV, I’m looking in your direction).

The character designs do need some variety… or personality. The stories are what work for this series and so long as those are in place, the franchise will be successfull… so long as they aren’t making it like that first movie of theirs… yuck.

The only reason I stopped playing Final Fantasy games was money. I didn’t have the money for a PS2 and I don’t have the money for a PS3. If I did I might buy it just to play this game like Auriana. (It was the reason my family got the original Playstation though we did get other games for that system.)
The actual gameplay bit in the middle looked mighty impressive.

Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the US) is by far the best in the series and probably the greatest RPG of all time. Screw new entries. REMAKE THIS CLASSIC!

Good lord…I just got the chills watching that trailer. I had goosebumps running up and down my arms and back. I’ve loved the FF series ever since I started playing FF3, or what is actually FF6 in Japan. FF typically has the best stories and best game play and cut scenes. I was never bored playing these games…even when they made FFX-2 which isn’t my fav.

  • Intro…

Earthbound is the greatest RPG, and nothing will top it. Nothing!

  • Ogre

Add me to the list of gamers that once loved the FF series but are now bored to death by them. Give me Fable, the Knights of the Old Republic games, Jade Empire, or Mass Effect when it comes to RPGs.

AUGH. The video isn’t available anymore. But that’s cool, because I don’t need to see it to know that I’m excited. FF are really the only RPGs that I’ve really enjoyed. Unless you count Kingdom Hearts II. I have a serious, serious KHII monkey on my back.

Square lost me when they went away from the more “traditional” turn-based combat to the “real time” combat they’re using now. With a good RPG, I don’t want to have to work on my twitch reflexes. Mass Effect is an exception though, so I’m going to say that new IP gets a pass.

  • Sci Fi Lover

The video can be found at FinalFantasty-xiii.net. The rest of you guys sound like experts, but I’m just a novice. I started with Myst and stayed there until I saw the trailer for FF xiii last year. However, I’m not too crazy about all that fighting. I love a good sci-fi story and exploring alien worlds but don’t want to get shot at. Hence, have not purchased a PS3 or the game yet because I only want to watch the movie. Who knows? Maybe I’ll take a chance and become a serious gamer starting with FF xiii. I love their official website FinalFantasyxiii.com
By the way, how would you serious gamers rank the Myst series?

  • Joel

I loved FF12 (especially its new combat system), so I would be very excited about FF13 if I had a PS3.
But for the foreseeable future, I’m going to be Wii-only (my PS2 doesn’t count), enjoying my Mario/Link/Samus games and jealously glancing at other consoles with games like FF13, GTA4 and Rock Band.

  • Mohammed

I haven’t played FF12 yet, but the people who were into it say it was the best entry in ages. And for good reason, since it was set in the universe of Ivalice (Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics). Final Fantasy 6 is the best game in the series in my book, and the DS remake of Final Fantasy 4, which is just coming out in Japan at this moment and features updated mechanics plus voice acting (including the Iron Chef as Golbez), makes me hopeful for a true remake as well.
Aside from the Final Fantasy series, more people need to pay attention to Atlus of Trauma Center and Shin Megami Tensei fame. Their games from the latter franchise tend to be the best yet most overlooked in the gemre, and Persona 3 is no exception from what I hear.
